Canine Ear Infections: Treatment and Prevention

Canine Ear Infections: Treatment and Prevention

by Jonathan C Halpert

Some dogs can go through their whole lives without so much as an itchy ear, while others have a never ending struggle with ear-mites, fungus, and allergies that have them forever scratching their heads. Many ear problems only affect the outer ear, and with a little effort you can greatly reduce the frequency and severity of your dogs infections.

Veterinarians use antibiotics to treat severe ear infections, these may include antibiotic/anti-fungal/anti-inflammatory medicines like Otomax or Malotic. Some owners also choose to take a more holistic approach to dealing with their pups infections before resorting to medicines

Keeping the ears clean and free of debris is the simplest way to help stave off an infection in your pet. Keep the hair around the ears, clean and trimmed and check the ears periodically to make sure they dont have a buildup. Dogs with long floppy ears seem to pick up more debris than those with pricked ears. Be especially sure to do a quick cleaning after a hike or a trip to the beach.

Some dogs seem to always have stuff in their ears. For them a rinse made of a simple 1:2 solution of white vinegar and water may help stave off infections. Use the solution to rinse the ear, massaging gently with a towel, then rinse a couple more times using plain filtered water. A 1:1 hydrogen peroxide/water solution also work well. Try the Hydrogen Peroxide solution if your dogs ears are tender from a lot of scratching as it will sting less than the vinegar.

Many large per stores stock several brands of commercial cleaners which may offer even more protection for your dog. Commercial ear cleaners often have ingredients specially formulated to treat common ear problems, and some of them even come with applicators which can make cleaning time much easier on both the dog and their owner.

A healthy diet is a great way to help your pup fight off infections of all kinds including ear infections. Many commercial foods use lots of fillers that add bulk to the product without providing much nutritional content. Do a web search for healthy or organic pet food options and treat your pet to a healthier lifestyle.

In spite of looking and smelling terrible, most ear infections only affect the outer ear. Keeping the ears clean and groomed will help reduce both the discomfort of common problems as well as the risk of greater infection. More serious infections to exist and you should be aware of the symptoms. If you notice your dog tilting their head more than normal, walking in circles, or showing signs of general clumsiness, it may be a sign of a more serious condition and you should schedule a trip to your local vet. - 20511

The Magnificent Brazilian Mastiff

The Magnificent Brazilian Mastiff

by Eric Salson

A very unusual combination, the Brazilian Mastiff is in fact a mastiff/bloodhound mix. They have traits of both breeds; including the famed sense of smell bloodhounds are so well known for. They also have the protectiveness and gentleness with children so common in mastiffs. Hailing from Brazil, they are known (in Portuguese) as Fila Brasileiro. Formerly employed as guards for plantations, they found their way to North America with conquistadors.

This loving creatures weigh about 100 pounds or more and they stand about 27-30 inches off the ground. They have the hound dog look in the face with a large flabby neck. They have short hair that is very easy to manage. Their colors vary. You may want one that is reddish tan, how about black or maybe even yellow. Then there is the most popular and that happens to be brindle.

Gentle like most mastiffs, they are capable of aggression when called for. Excellent guard dogs, they are nonetheless very good with children. They are also famed for their loyalty.

Brazilian Mastiffs still are seen in hunting, being as good at the job as their bloodhound relatives. They specialize in tracking down and catching prey while waiting for their owners to catch up; in fact, the "Fila" in "Fila Brasileiro" is from Portuguese and means "hold".

These are an athletic breed although some Mastiffs are not athletic at all and they even are known to become obese. Again they get their athletic abilities from the bloodhound side. The guarding side comes from the Mastiff. Mastiffs are very watchful dogs and although they aren't aggressive in nature, they will guard their family.

In fact, the Brazilian Mastiff is well known to not like strangers at all. It doesn't matter if they are intruders or not. You have to be around them when they are puppies and as they grow if you plan on becoming someone they won't attempt to attack or become aggressive towards. Extremely loyal to his family and will be as gentle as he could be around children.

They will attack without permission so it is wise to hide him if strangers plan on staying as guests. Even the best of the best Brazilian mastiffs, the show quality, can become aggressive towards the judges. That is a scary thought. Imagine being attacked as a show dog judge? I think that I would keep the working dog category out of my choice of judging. That is to say the least.

Remember to be careful as you choose your new Brazilian Mastiff puppy. You want to make sure that the breeder is a good and trustworthy one. Some breeders have other agendas when selling their puppies so it is wise to get references first hand. - 20511

How to Aid Separation Anxiety With Dog Behavior Modification

How to Aid Separation Anxiety With Dog Behavior Modification

by MB Bryce

Dog behavior modification can be confusing. Canines are communal creatures and as such delight in being with their humans. When left isolated they often become distressed, suffering from an attachment disorder, recognized as separation anxiety. Dogs who suffer from separation anxiety often communicate their anxiety by excessive, barking, whining, digging, gnawing and soiling.

The notably effective remedy for separation anxiety contains dog behavior modification. There are few manageable tricks that manage to aid.

1. Crate training is extremely effectual in separation anxiety. Many canines respond well to confinement in a small room because it makes them feel secure. Remember, the crate or "safe room" is a space where the pet feels secure and calm; never use the crate or "safe room" as disciplinary action.

2. Notice the hints of distress. Owners need to spot the warning hints of distress: panting, pacing, whining, trembling, digging, declining to eat, ears tucked down and back; all these add up to anxiety.

Owners cannot honor these behaviors by saying "You're okay!" Before the canine becomes agitated, owners should calm the behavior by speaking to the pet, stroking it or grooming. If the pet still becomes anxious when the owner exits, they must ignore the action and not over the pet. Fussing or sympathizing unconsciously rewards the nervous action.

3. One of the best tricks for dog behavior modification is exercise. The more you exercise your canine, the more nervousness is relaxed, hence, the less your canine will gnaw your furniture when you are away. There is an absolute correlation with anxiety minimization in people and exercise. The same goes with dogs. Take your canine for a long, and I mean a LONG walk. It will be a great nervous tension help for you and your pet. Think of the relationship you will have and the amazing health benefits!!!

Separation anxiety can be cured with dog behavior modification. Separation anxiety can be severe and all-consuming to some dogs. Other dogs can adjust with just a couple tips.

If you find your dog is a severe case, find a veterinary evaluation by a behaviorist. They may need pharmacological help in addition to the dog behavior modification. Hopefully, the above tricks will work and in no time your dog will be "feeling right at home" while you are gone. - 20511

House Training A Puppy: 6 Simple Tips To Potty Training A Puppy

House Training A Puppy: 6 Simple Tips To Potty Training A Puppy

by Christine Andrews

Most new dog owners don't look forward to the task of house training a puppy. It can be pretty confusing when you hear different advice from almost everyone you talk to.

Here are six simple tips on how to potty train a puppy that any dog owner can use to make it as easy as possible for both you and your dog.

Tip #1: Feed Your Puppy At The Same Times Each Day

A lot of dog owners prefer free feeding to set feeding times. Free feeding means leaving a bowl of food out all day so your dog can eat whenever he gets hungry. This can work well with older dogs, but when you're house training a new puppy or dog it's much better to feed him a specific times, following a set schedule.

Dogs are like us. After eating, they usually need to go potty. With a consistent meal schedule, you'll have a lot more control over when he needs to go potty. This means a lot fewer accidents for your new puppy.

Tip #2: Have a Consistent Potty Schedule

Following a feeding schedule will help you get started with this. You should take your new puppy out after every meal, and also a few more times each day. If possible, try to make these extra potty trips at the same time each day.

By following a potty break schedule, you'll remember to get your new puppy outside during the day. Puppies thrive on schedules because they give them a real sense of security. When they don't know what to expect from day to day, puppies become anxious. This anxiety can easily lead to digestive problems - and that makes the whole house training process much harder.

Tip #3: Choose A "Potty" Command And Use It Consistently

You'll want to choose a verbal command to use when you want your puppy to go potty. This should be something you're comfortable saying at any time - and in front of anyone. A few common ones are: "go potty" "tinkle" "potty" or "get busy."

Now that you've chosen a command, you should use it every time you want your dog to go potty. When he's learning the command, you should use it only when you are standing where you want him to go potty. Once your puppy is trained, you can open the door, say "go potty" or whatever command you use, and he'll run right over to his spot and go potty - all on his own.

Tip #4: When Your Dog Has An Accident, Don't Scold Or Yell At Him

Almost every puppy has an accident while house training - some more than others. When this happens, always remain calm. Don't scold him - and whatever you do, never rub his nose in it. This is not just outdated advice it's also completely ineffective.

As with all dog training, positive reinforcement is much more effective than negative. Making your puppy feel bad when he makes a mistake doesn't work. You want to teach him that good things happen when he goes potty in the right place. Which brings us to the next potty training tip

Tip #5: Always Reward Your Puppy When He Gets It Right

It's just as important to reward your puppy when he goes potty correctly as it is when he does a "sit" any other command.

Puppies respond well to a combination of sincere praise and a little reward. This can be a show of affection, a special treat, or a short play session. The most important thing isn't what reward you choose - the important thing is that he gets his reward immediately when he goes potty. This way he will connect going potty in the right place with getting praised and rewarded.

Start by praising him verbally while he's actually going potty. Say "good boy! Good potty!" in a friendly upbeat voice. Give him some lovin' or a treat that you've brought along. Or toss his favorite toy for a short game of fetch. If you're on a walk, you can bounce the ball and let him catch it "mid-bounce" as a reward.

Just remember, you must reward your puppy immediately. Getting praise and a treat will make your puppy happy. He'll quickly connect going potty on command with happiness and joy.

Tip #6: Crate Training Your Puppy Means Less Accidents

While proper crate training is beyond the scope of this article, here is why you should seriously consider it when house training a puppy

First of all, crate training lets you put your dog in his crate or kennel whenever you can't watch him yourself. Second, dogs are den animals and it's against their nature to soil their dens. This means your puppy will naturally wait to go potty after he's been let out of his crate.

Your job is to be sure you don't leave him in the crate for too long and to immediately take him out to go potty when you let him out. The best part is that he'll usually have to go -- and, with your help, he'll always be going when and where you want him to go!

Your new puppy is going to love you unconditionally. In return, you should do your best to train him properly so he's always a joy to be around. Potty training a puppy is a very important step in raising a dog that's happy, healthy, and easy to love. - 20511

Choosing The Right Havanese Puppies For You And Your Children

Choosing The Right Havanese Puppies For You And Your Children

by Fiona Kelly

There is a special connection between dog lovers and a little known breed called the Havanese. Havanese puppies are quickly gaining in popularity across the country, and it's not just competitors that are finding this lovable little breed to be so desirable, but families around the country are realizing that with the Havanese puppies being so mild mannered, they are the perfect little dogs for homes with children. If you have been considering getting your child their first dog, then the Havanese may well be the perfect choice for you.

Choosing the right Havanese puppies for your family doesn't have to be a difficult process, either. As long as you understand what to look for, and know what a healthy dog looks like, buying Havanese puppies can be a rather enjoyable experience. And if you know that the dogs you are choosing from are healthy, then you can focus on simply picking the perfect pup for you.

The first thing you have to understand about Havanese puppies, is that they are very energetic and playful little dogs, as a general rule. Dogs that show signs of lethargy may be under nourished, and may require special attention before they begin to act like their normal selves.

Although it isn't recommended that a litter box be used on a regular basis, it does allow people living in apartments the peace of mind of knowing that they won't be coming home to puddles on the living room rug.

The second thing that makes these little dogs so very popular amongst those living in small homes is that they are very affectionate, and are more than happy to curl up beside you on the sofa if you let them. With their small size, Havanese puppies are perfect lap dogs and they make wonderful companions for both children and the elderly alike. A Havanese is by its very nature an affectionate and loyal dog, and should be treated with the absolute utmost in care and affection.

In all, choosing the right Havanese puppies doesn't have to be a difficult process. As long as you make certain that they have been well cared for by their original owners or their breeders, you can find a puppy that will provide you and your family with many years of love and affection.

Havanese puppies are quickly becoming more and more popular around the world as people begin to better understand what was once a little known breed.

In short, Havanese puppies are a wonderful addition to any family, and can be one of the most beautiful dogs to enter into shows and competitions. Their beautiful fluffy coats make them a popular choice among judges, and their sweet temperaments make them a special favorite in shows across the country. There's simply no better choice for families and competitors than the amazing Havanese puppies. - 20511

Things To Know About Pomeranian Rescue Dog

Things To Know About Pomeranian Rescue Dog

by Rosie Allan

Every pet should have a chance at a happy and healthy life and a Pomeranian rescue dog is no exception. Congratulations on your new pet and also on your humane views on giving abused pets a second chance. If you take your time your new pet will reward you with years of love. But be patient with the little dog, it has been through a lot and will need time to adjust to a new home.

Many times the animal rescue center will assure you that their vet has looked your pet over and there is no reason at all to doubt that. But it is always a good idea to get your new dog to your own vet as soon as possible so that your dog and your vet can get acquainted and so that your vet can give the dog another look just in case the rescue center vet missed something in their evaluation.

It is in the genes of a Pomeranian to be a natural alarm system and bark with that high-pitched bark at anything that moves or they think moves. A Pomeranian rescue dog then will probably be a barking machine because they are just coming out of a bad situation and will probably be on edge. You can remind the dog that barking is not necessary by being forceful and consistent but not mean. Over time the barking should begin to subside.

Housebreaking a well-adjusted Pomeranian can take quite a while so a Pomeranian rescue dog will probably be a challenge if they are not already housebroken. Try the standard housebreaking methods at first and be patient because it can take a long time for them to get it. If they are already housebroken then they will adjust quickly, but if they are not then you will have to train them and you will need to take your time and be ready for somewhat of a struggle.

A Pomeranian dog is known for its brash attitude and high intelligence and you may not see that right away with your Pomeranian rescue dog. But as your Pomeranian rescue dog adjusts to its new life with you and your family it will start to let its true personality show through.

Pomeranians are very intelligent dogs that like to get their way and are a very pompous breed of dog. You may notice a change in your Pomeranian rescue dog as time goes by and this is very normal. When a traumatized animal comes to you they carry their past with them and some breeds never really learn that their new surroundings are better. A Pomeranian should catch on that their days of abuse are over and they should begin to exhibit their real personality as time goes by.

Never punish your Pomeranian rescue dog. They have been through enough and they do not take to punishment well at all anyways. Always use positive reinforcement and a lot of patience. Show your dog that it is loved and it will give you back that love for years to come.

Always use positive reinforcement and never punish the dog as it has been through enough and punishment makes a Pomeranian more obnoxious anyways. So enjoy your new dog and they should bring you love and happiness for years. - 20511

Shih Tzu Breeding: What You Need To Know

Shih Tzu Breeding: What You Need To Know

by Rebecca Simpson

When a lot of people think of breeding dogs, the first thought that seems to come into everyone's mind is that of money. There seems to be a lot of money that is being made by dog breeders, especially for those who are into Shih Tzu breeding.

When profit is the bottom line, the Shih Tzu care is often neglected. It is vital to make sure that you are in it for the right reasons, even though the dollar amount you can make is pretty flashy.

Shih Tzu care is the most important part of getting your dogs ready to breed and there are many reasons for that. When breeders fail to be concerned or pay attention to the care and health of the Shih Tzu's they plan to breed, there is a hefty price to pay and the dogs and puppies themselves generally pay that price. When starting out, it is suggested that you breed only one pair at a time so that you can focus all of your attention on them to make sure it goes smoothly.

When thinking about breeding your dogs, you should consider Shih Tzu care. Are you able to testify that you truly know the medical and emotional background of your breeding pair?

It cannot be stressed enough that you must have an extensive knowledge of what this breed is prone to.

With the adult dogs, you need to know about the current health of your breeding pair along with any possible health conditions that they suffered in the past. It is extremely important that you begin your breeding with a healthy set of parents in hopes that this will better your chances at getting healthy puppies, although there is never a guarantee. If the adult Shih Tzus in your home are new to your family, consider not breeding them for about a year so you can better evaluate their temperament and health. Before beginning any breeding, make sure your local vet checks them out.

One of the most stressed issues about Shih Tzu breeding is that breeders will not allow the mother dog enough time to recover from her first birthing experience before trying to breed her again. Puppy mills are famous for neglecting their dogs in this manner. Give her the time she needs before trying again and once you have the hang of Shih Tzu care and breeding, you could possibly bring in another female so that the two take turns breeding. This way, you can continue to share the love of Shih Tzu puppies with others but still keep tabs on the mental and physical well being of your dogs.

Once your female Shih Tzu has produced pups, her care does not end there. She still requires healing time both for her mental and physical health. Puppy mills will often turn right around and try to breed that female right away. This is not safe for her or her future pups. Just as humans need time to recover, so do dogs. Understand that Shih Tzu breeding is an emotional journey and do not be alarmed if you notice your female acting distant or protective of her pups. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself is to read as much Shih Tzu information as possible. - 20511

Best Practices For Taking Yorkshire Terrier Pictures

Best Practices For Taking Yorkshire Terrier Pictures

by Susan Bailey

Yorkshire Terriers are so photogenic. They are the perfect dogs for photography. Have you ever wished you can take professional quality pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier? There's no need for you to purchase expensive camera equipment to take great pictures of your dog. Technological advances, and price decreases, mean you can take great photos of your Yorkshire Terrier with an inexpensive digital camera or even a camera phone.

Taking pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier can be a fun activity for you and your dog to do together. The beautiful Yorkshire Terrier breed, with its silky coat, is a natural subject for portrait photography. Your dog can look terrific in pictures whether you use the very latest in high-tech digital cameras or an inexpensive camera phone.

Your dog only has a certain amount of patience, so get everything ready beforehand. Put fresh high-capacity memory storage card in your digital camera, replace the batteries and carry fresh batteries with you.

Start with fresh batteries. Decide whether you'll take pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier inside or outside, and secure the location if you decide to shoot outside. Make sure all your backdrops and props are ready and close at hand. Have an idea of the different poses that you want to capture.

When you're trying to take great pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier, you can't also be the one who stages the dog, poses the dog, chases the dog, grooms the dog, lights the dog - do you see what I mean?. Ask a friend who likes your Yorkshire Terrier - and whom your dog likes -- to act as your assistant. After the photo session is over, give your helper a framed print of one of your Yorkshire Terrier photos as a thank you gift.

Believe me, you're hands will be full once you start taking pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier. You can only do one thing at a time and do it well, so focus your attention on taking great pictures. You'll need at least one extra set of hands to manage your Yorkshire Terrier, comb its gorgeous hair, wipe its eyes, arrange the backdrops, and do safety duty, especially if you are taking your Yorkshire Terrier pictures out of doors.

The best Yorkshire Terrier pictures all seem to be at the dog's eye level. Don't be afraid to get down on the floor with your dog and take pictures, or set your dog on a tabletop or bed to raise its height. Remember, safety first! With these great tips, soon you'll be taking amazing pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier. ## Your choice of background can make or break your Yorkshire Terrier pictures, so put plenty of thought into your backgrounds. Cloth backdrops should be matte, not shiny. You might want to use a chromatic green backdrop. With a chromatic green backdrop, your background disappears in digital images, and you can place your Yorkshire Terrier into any backdrop you can find. You can add surf, turf or snow to your picture without every going to the beach, the park or the mountain.

Toys and props not only add interest to your photos, they keep your dog engaged during the photo session. When you're photographing a puppy, the objects will emphasize how small the puppy is and make him or her look even younger. You should always photograph your dog from your dog's eye level, not your eye level. Yorkies are so light and easy to lift, so you can easily put your dog on a tabletop or bed to make it easy to get at eye level. These helpful tips will help you get the very best pictures of your Yorkshire Terrier. - 20511

Poodles: The Rock Stars Of The Dog World

Poodles: The Rock Stars Of The Dog World

by Lisa A Collins

The Standard Poodle is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. For more than ten years, the Poodle has consistently ranked in the American Kennel Club's top ten registered breeds. This confident, dignified breed makes an excellent pet for an owner who wants an active, intelligent dog.

To measure a Poodle's height against the standard of the breed, measure the dog at the highest point of the shoulder. A Standard Poodle measures more than fifteen inches at the shoulder. A Miniature Poodle measures fifteen inches or less at the shoulder, and a Toy Poodle measures less than ten inches.

Standards for the Poodle coat are the same for all three sizes. The Poodle coat is dense, wiry and curly, and also rough to the touch. Standards of the breed allow a range of colors from black to white, with brown, apricot blue, gray and silver in between.

The Poodle's popularity extends back in time at least four centuries, so it is no surprise that several countries claim to be the country of origin for the breed. Germany, Denmark and France all claim that the Standard Poodle originated within their borders. Over time, the French claims have endured, and the Poodle is often referred to as a French Poodle. Genetically speaking, the breed's ancestry can be traced to a cross between the Hungarian Water Hound and a French water dog known as the Barbet.

Although the Poodle is classified as a non-sporting dog, humans have trained Poodles for centuries to perform useful activities. Germans used Poodles as gun dogs, training them to retrieve downed waterfowl. The traditional Poodle clip, with puffs of hair at the shoulders, was designed to provide insulation against the cold during hunts. Poodles are easy to train because of their intelligence and eagerness to please. Poodles have also worked as truffle hunters and circus performers, and they are used to this day in the modern entertainment industry.

The Poodle's intelligence and eager-to-please temperament make it an easy breed to train. Humans have taken advantage of the Poodle's trainability, using the dog as a retriever for bird hunting and as a tracker in truffle hunting. Poodles have also held a variety of jobs in the entertainment industry, as circus performers and performers in modern film and television.

Standard Poodle can become famous as a performer, while others derive their fame from their celebrity owners. Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas loved their first Poodle, Basket, so much that they got two more Poodles, named Basket II and Basket III. Performer "Weird Al" Yankovic has a Toy Poodle named Bela, whom he on top of his head for the cover of his album "Poodle Hat". Wrestling star Rene Dupree, who know uses the professional name "Rene Bonaparte", often refers to his Poodle Fifi.

And a fictional Poodle named Fifi is featured in the animated TV series Rugrats. Most Standard Poodles will never see their name in lights, but their owners nevertheless consider them stars. - 20511

Teacup Chihuahua Basics

Teacup Chihuahua Basics

by Sandra Dean

Teacup Chihuahuas are adored for their physical fitness. Although they are very small in size, it does not really inhibit their spirit of being a healthier dog than all other breeds of same size. Teacup Chihuahuas can easily become your best companion with its sweet and loving personality. If an unfamiliar person comes into your home, usually a Teacup Chihuahua will bark a lot. However, they can turn out to be a friend once the person becomes familiar to the dog.

Some Teacup Chihuahuas are blessed with long coat, which is more or less similar to human hair. If you are allergic to dog or cat hair, it is quite likely you do not have to face an allergy problem with your Teacup Chihuahua. Regular grooming is compulsory in order to maintain the beautiful hair of the Teacup Chihuahua. It is always better to take the Teacup Chihuahuas to a professional groomer for a regular grooming session.

If you buy a Teacup Chihuahua, you must know how crucial daylight and fresh air is to the growth of your new little dog. In fact, they also need to do regular exercise in order to maintain a healthy and steady body. When you take your Teacup Chihuahua for a walk, you must be careful. It is simply because of their overly friendly nature that may bring danger at times. Usually, Teacup Chihuahuas tend to greet other dogs from the same breed when they meet. It may be possible that the other dog may not have the same friendly attitude, so it may possibly harm your dog.

Teacup Chihuahuas are found to mix nicely with other household animals such as dogs and cats. In fact, they try to show their friendly attitude towards bigger dogs as well. Many times, the bigger dog does not accept the friendliness so easily and the result may be harmful to your dog. On the other hand, while playing with cats, Teacup Chihuahuas may get harmed due to the claws of the cats.

While you consider buying a Teacup Chihuahua, you must be concerned about three essential needs. These are good nutrition, warmth and affection. Teacup Chihuahuas need to be fed three to four times a day until they become six months old. After that time twice daily will do.

After that, it may be fed twice daily. In order to avoid obesity and related problems such as crippling bone diseases, you must provide your dog a well balanced diet as well.

In order to stay fit and healthy, the Teacup Chihuahua needs a warm and quiet place to sleep. Usually, you can see them playing energetically and then all of a sudden they fall asleep. The sleeping hours usually decrease as they age. Another important aspect is of course exercise. In order to retain good health and sound temperament, all Teacup Chihuahuas need regular exercise. Lack of exercise may impose improper behavioral patterns in Teacup Chihuahuas.

Affection and a sense of being an integral part of a family makes them happiest. As they can be your best friend they also crave your companionship for life. - 20511

You've Heard of a Dog Door, What About a Cat Door

You've Heard of a Dog Door, What About a Cat Door

by Craig T Lewis

It may be surprising to know all the uses you could put a dog door to, even if you don't have dogs. If you have a pet cat, the dog door can also be used by that. This is also convenient if you have a small dog or a pup - so the same sized door can be used by both. Usually owners install dog doors for dogs but rarely bother to do the same for cats.

Cats are usually looked at as house pets, or to be precise, lazy house pets that would rather not go out. However, getting your cat to do some exercise is a good idea as most have a tendency to grow fat and lazy very quickly. At such times having a cat door to shoo it out of the house and letting it in when it wants can be a great idea. And if your cat is the outdoor type, it will definitely appreciate the quick access to safety when it gets into trouble.

Dog doors for cats can be replaced by a think film of vinyl or strong plastic that is easy for the cat to push its way through. Cats generally tend to use their claws on anything that might seem like a deterring factor, so it is best to have a flap on the door which will open easily even without any pawing. Otherwise you might find the lovely finish of thermo vinyl or aluminum badly scratched! Another mistake is installing wire mead or a net of any sort. Cats can very easily tear through most.

Dog doors for cats are useful in another way as well. Cats are known to go to extreme lengths to get things they want. A cat wanting to get out of the house will resort to extreme measures in the absence of a dog or cat door. This includes jumping on the kitchen counter or even jumping onto the coffee table in a bid to get to the window. All this jumping and the resulting destruction of (often expensive) property can be put to an end with a cat door.

Dog doors for cats can be installed on all the doors of the house, not just the front or main door. This allows your cat access to all the rooms so it can roam about freely. If you want to keep the cat out of a particular room for some time, just lock the cat door. Dog doors for cats come with a variety of locking systems and you will definitely find one to suit your purpose.

A house is quite large and a cat quite small. Therefore it is quite easy for it to get lost in one of the rooms. Consequently, you might find the idea of having cat doors all over the house a little unnerving. However, the idea is to give your pet freedom. Cats are inquisitive creatures and like to snoop around. Keep them cooped up in a room and they will soon become lazy, fat and very boring. A cat that can roam about the house is far more interesting. If you're worried about losing it, tie a little bell around its neck. That way you'll here your cat every time it runs through a cat door. - 20511

If you are concerned about security when looking at a (http://dogdoorbiz.com/small-dog-door) small dog door for your cat. You can always look into using a (http://dogdoorbiz.com/locking-dog-door) locking dog door for peice of mind. Just make sure the door is not too heavy for your cat to push through.

What Kind Of Pomeranians Do You Want For Pomeranian Pictures

What Kind Of Pomeranians Do You Want For Pomeranian Pictures

by Rosie Allan

If you want people to be attracted to your dog product or dog-related activity, you are faced with a bewildering choice of dog pictures to advertise your doggy product or event. There are so many breeds with such incredible variations among them! There is the adorable ugliness of an English Bulldog, the handsomeness of a German Shepherd, or the perky appeal of Jack Russell Terriers. You are best off advertising your dog product or event with Pomeranian pictures.

If you are searching for Pomeranian pictures to illustrate you articles or web pages, you certainly don't need to alienate your readers by having pictures of inferior Pomeranians. Their eyes will go right for the Pomeranian pictures and have your article or web page judged before they've even read a word. If you are not sure of what breed a dog is, don't risk alienating readers by misidentifying the dog!

There are very unscrupulous people selling Pomeranians of questionable parentage for purebred prices. You need to be somewhat familiar with the breed standard. One easy way to do this is by comparing a breeder's stock to Pomeranian pictures.

Avoid black Pomeranian pictures, as those unfamiliar with dogs often get them confused with the all black Schipperkes. Also, be sure you know what time period the Pomeranian picture is from. The breed has gone through quantum changes in the last 200 years.

Love it or hate it, the best place to go for accurate quality Pomeranian pictures is the Internet. Don't just type in "Pomeranian pictures" into your favorite search engine, or you will be besieged with puppy for sale ads.

If you decide to go the model route for your Pomeranian pictures, you should have no trouble finding photogenic Pomeranians. There are many animal trainers and professional dog trainers you could contact to see if they know of a model. But you might not even need to go that far.

It is important to get pictures of subjects that look like what most people think Pomeranians should look like. They look like a little bit larger versions of puppies all of their lives. You will know the right Pomeranian picture not by the dog's color, size or pose, but by the way you are about to automatically say "Awww!"

Pomeranian pictures do not tell the entire story of what it's like to live with Pomeranians. Getting a Pomeranian puppy is absolutely no different from adopting a newborn child (except there are no diapers involved). You need to be able to devote time, money and attention to this special creature. They can't be placed in storage to be brought out when you feel like it. If you just want to look at Pomeranians, then just plaster your walls with Pomeranian pictures. - 20511

Beagles Eager To Learn New Behaviors

Beagles Eager To Learn New Behaviors

by Michelle Adams

Finding the perfect pet for a family with small children can be a daunting task, with many small breeds that may be good with kids, the Beagle is about the most well rounded breed for children. Its even temper and eagerness to please their owners, makes the Beagle an ideal animal for indoor company.

This trait works well to make them serve as watchdogs as they will generally only bark and carry on around people with whom they are unfamiliar. Often times their skittishness around strangers has been confused with aggression but most often a simple word of reassurance from their owners will quiet and settle them down almost immediately.

Although relatively short in stature, standing between 13 and 16-inches tall, the Beagle is taller than the so-called toy dogs, making it an ideal pet for small children. Inherited health issues may include epilepsy, which can be controlled by medication, but Beagles lack the numerous problems that afflict other breeds. Hypothyroidism and dwarfism are possible with many beagles and their diet is especially important as they may have a tendency to gain weight. This is usual among animals that are maintained in an inactive environment.

Beagles trained for hunting and those that have adequate outdoor space in which to run seldom develop a weight problem, provided their diet is consistent with their needs. One of their physical traits, long eyelashes that contributes to their overall appearance can also cause problems, these long lashes may curl into the eyes and become embedded. But this easily fixed by minor surgery and by the owner being conscious of the possibility during grooming.

Beagles have been used as hunting dogs, mostly due to their keen sense of smell. Their use in rabbit hunting in the 18th century quickly exceeded that of the harrier as the Beagles speed, stamina and determination would allow them to track down the speedier animal.

Their size also allowed them entry to many places larger hunting dogs could not fit. Heavy underbrush, while inviting to hares, proved no match for the Beagle and its sense of smell and ability track the animals into the wild.

One of the smartest of the dog breeds, they not only remember and recognize previous friends of the family they have met, but can also quickly master some of the most complex commands.

The all day hunters appreciated the instincts of a well-trained beagle is they could ride leisurely behind the dog as it chased the scent of its quarry into even the thickest of undergrowth, emerging successfully with its prey. - 20511

How To Raise A Shar Pei Rescue Dog

How To Raise A Shar Pei Rescue Dog

by Melissa Coleman

Giving a pet a second chance at a good life is always a wonderful thing to do and when you take in a Shar Pei rescue dog you are doing a wonderful and humane thing.

It will take some time but after a while, when your Shar Pei rescue dog starts to feel comfortable in your home, the real personality of your dog will shine through and you will start to see the traits that make a Shar Pei so unique. But in the meantime there are things you can do, and behaviors you should watch for, while your dog is settling in.

Give your new Shar Pei rescue dog some space and let them look around their new home a little. The first thing you are going to want to make sure is that they know they are in a new home and not still in their abusive situation. Just let them see their new surroundings and take it all in.

A Shar Pei rescue dog is going to need time to adjust to the hustle and bustle of a new home and even though they are very intelligent they are still going to need time to adjust. A lot of commotion or quick sudden movements towards the dog are going to confuse it so make sure you reduce the amount of clatter that goes on in your home and make sure no one is constantly lunging at the dog or else it can get confused.

The Shar Pei is one of the most intelligent dogs there is and they take to training very well. However an abused Shar Pei is going to be cautious at first and may seem like they are hesitant to be trained. Be patient and do not punish the dog. You should use only positive reinforcement when training your dog and also be prepared for later on when that hesitation can turn to boredom as your dog gets bored of the repetitive nature of training.

When the Shar Pei was first being bred in China it was bred as an aggressive but intelligent dog. Your Shar Pei rescue dog will more than likely have some of that aggression going on as defense mechanisms to what it has been through.

They are also very loyal dogs that become very attached to their family and if you show enough patience and love towards them then eventually they will drop the aggression and move to being the loyal family dog they really want to be.

You have made a wonderful choice in getting a Shar Pei rescue dog and if you use the right amount of love and patience you will soon start to see all of the wonderful traits that other owners love about their Shar Pei. Just give it time and you will have a happy and healthy family pet that will be loyal to you and your family for many years to come. - 20511

Pets can add fun, companionship and a feeling of safety to your life. Before getting a pet, think carefully about which animal is best for your family. Pets provide many benefits to humans. They comfort us and they give us companionship.

Dogs such as West Highland White Terriers are prone to liver failure as it is believed that they cannot and do not excrete things such as copper as other dogs do. Infections that are viral and also bacterial, especially in that region of your dogs body can lead to liver failure and also eating substances that are considered poisonous. Dogs chew slippers because they like something to gnaw. There may be a familiar odour to the slipper, and once they've taken their first bite, it will be hard to stop them returning for more!

Dogs can have play sessions in their kennel, in the play area or on the surrounding countryside depending on your preference. Outside of the play area, pets are kept on leads at all times. Dogs that have food allergy or intolerance also called adverse reactions to food typically are having an abnormal response to the protein in the food. Only Prescription Diet& z/d& Canine dog food is formulated with Hills Hydrolyzed Protein System a process that breaks down intact animal proteins and significantly reduces the possibility of an adverse reaction to food.

Dogs and cats can also spread infections . For example, pets that are often outdoors easily pick up ticks, which can carry diseases such as Lyme disease . Dogs are among the most difficult mammals to clone, scientists say, because their reproductive systems are highly atypical, but Hawthorne thinks that the market is keen.

Dogs and humans often have an interdependent relationship. Humans give dogs food and shelter, and dogs give humans companionship and work. Dogs are better off in fenced areas, where they can see the barrier between them and the world, where they can feel somewhat safe from noisy, frolicking children. In addition, many dogs instinctively equate the high-pitched sounds of children with the distress sounds of prey animals, and they react by biting the child as they would have bitten the prey animal in the wild.

My cat only sneezes at certain times. His appetite remains good, no digestive problems ,also contiues to be playful. My cat meows non stop. He meows outside the bedroom door, walks around making browing to no one or nothing in particular. My cats would love a house like this. - 20511

Unique Content Article: Long Coated German Shepherds Make Great Pets

Long Coated German Shepherds Make Great Pets

by Jan Ryan

Most people are not familiar with the long coated German Shepherd. This is basically because the AKC does not consider it a registered standard German Shepherd. The breed standard German Shepherd is short haired with an obvious undercoat. However, the long coated German Shepherd is an absolutely beautiful dog to the eye and the general public has fallen in love with this dog. They make wonderful working dogs, are very gentle with assistance work, are great with police work and make the best pets.

A long coated German Shepherd is absolutely beautiful to behold and has a much sweeter temperament then their short haired cousins. They also tend to be more comical then the shorthaired variety which really endears them to the public. They are great at assistance work, make exceptional working dogs and do quite well with police work.

The difference between the regular coat and the long coated German Shepherd's coat is simply the longer hair. The long coated German Shepherd's hair is very soft and parts along the back. There usually is no undercoat or it will be only found in the loin region. The long coated German Shepherd is not weatherproofed and, therefore, considered undesirable by the breed standards. They have bushy tufts behind their ears and big fluffy pantaloons and a huge bushy round tail.

There is one distinct difference between the long coated German Shepherd and the short haired German Shepherd in that the Long coated German Shepherd has a longer coat. The characteristics of a long coated German Shepherd's hair are that it is very silky and soft and will part along the back. They have round bushy tails and big fluffy pantaloons with fringes along the back of their legs. They have long hair between their toes and bushy tufts behind their ears.

Puppies can be identified as a long coated German Shepherd if it has ear fringe or tufts. Long coated German Shepherds also do not have undercoats, therefore, they are not waterproof and make them undesirable for breed standards. Long coated German Shepherds also do not shed more then it's shorthaired counterpart, nor does it have a distinctive odor. These are two rumors that have passed through the German Shepherd family and both should be considered false.

The long coated German Shepherd makes a very good family dog. It has a sweet temperament, is intelligent and works very hard when asked to. This dog does great police work and is gentle with assistance work and are very much a working dog. They love affection and strive to please their owners. These dogs are also very comical in the way that only dogs can be comical.

Just because the American Kennel Club is not accepting of these dogs does not mean the public has to be against owning them. They are the best dogs and no one needs a trophy to tell them so. Just because they do not have an undercoat and are not waterproof should not really make a difference when selecting a dog.

Don't let a silly thing like not belonging to the American Kennel Club stop you from owning the best dog in the world. - 20511

by Ferdinand Okeke

If you have a pet that is constantly scratching, Advantage flea medicine should be able to assist. Through halting the pervasion of fleas and eliminating the ones that try to bite your pet, you will be able to work at ridding your pets and home of these troublesome pests. It is very vital that your home is ridded of fleas, as they can carry diseases and cause discomfort to dogs, cats, as well as humans.

Advantage flea medicine is simple to apply. It can either be in pill or lotion format, you treat your pet with the medications. The pet then absorbs the medication into their blood stream. By undermining ther reproductive powers, hence the reduction in the number of fleas, you can exploit your pet as a flea removal implement.

Advantage flea medicine can be used throughout the year, but it is recommended that for those who do not want to treat their pets all of the time, it is applied several weeks prior to the start of flea season. Flea season usually begins in April, thus it is suggested that you start treatments in early march. Medication should continue through the end of the flea season, which normally occurs in December Because of this, only January and February are reasonably safe for your pets to stay without medications.

Assuming you have a flea problem, Advantage flea medication can actually assist you in getting rid of the problem. Nonetheless, this method takes time. If you have a serious infestation, you will have to use flea foggers or other products to speedily rid your pets of fleas. One of the advantages you can will derive from flea medication is the prevention of the occurance of infestation. This is particularly vital if your pet goes outside, as the majority of flea infestations begin with a pet who has gone outside and has brought so much as a single flea indoors.

Unique Content Article: French Bulldog Rescue: A Worthwhile Cause

French Bulldog Rescue: A Worthwhile Cause

by Bobby Callahan

Most states have a Bulldog rescue and can be contacted by telephone or the Internet. If you find a French bulldog in need of help contact your nearest rescue league representatives as they are very eager to help. Rescue units have also created websites with photos of the French Bulldogs waiting to be adopted. The websites are very useful as they provide very good information about the history, special needs and characteristics of any particular dog they are sheltering. One can also find lists of events for participating in fundraising activities and donations.

Anyone desiring to adopt this special dog must carefully consider the responsibility of caring for a French bulldog. This dog needs tender loving care on a continual basis otherwise it will behave horribly. Bulldogs need to feel that they are part of a family and are lost if neglected. The breed type of French Bulldogs make it intolerant to heat and cannot be left outdoors unattended for long periods of time. If the dog is exposed to heat beyond its tolerance level death is imminent. They are best as an indoor dog within an air-conditioned area.

The French Bulldog rescue is a non-profit and volunteered staffed organization active in the United States. The main goal is to find suitable homes for unwanted, stray or abandoned French Bulldogs. The rescue places hundreds of dogs each year into foster homes.

It is very important that the dogs are kept cool at all times as they are very intolerant to heat. If the French Bulldog is overly exposed to heat it will have difficulty breathing and excessive panting. The best remedy is to cool them down as quickly as possible with a cold shower or bath.

It is very important to make sure anyone interested in adopting a French bulldog makes the correct match for dog and owner. The dogs require a lot of love and attention on a continual basis. They cannot be neglected especially when outdoors during hot temperatures. Death is inevitable if heat exposure is beyond the bulldog's tolerance level. It will develop breathing problems with excessive panting and will require immediate emergency action such as a cold shower or bath or even feeding it with an ice cube.

If you are looking to adopt a French Bulldog rescue dog look no further than the local pet fairs, pet supply stores or dog fairs can provide reliable information. The Internet is another good place to start as it lists French Bulldog rescue centers in your local area. The website of any French Bulldog rescue can provide almost any information you require about selecting, fostering and caring for a Bulldog.

Individuals interested in adopting a French Bulldog must be prepared to be thoroughly assessed by volunteer rescue staff for a proper match between dog and owner. If you are a neat freak you may need to think twice about adopting this special breed, as it is a very messy eater and drinker. They need their wrinkles cleaned regularly so they don't acquire infections. They are very sensitive to heat due to the shape of their face.

If they are overly exposed to the heat they are in very real danger of impending death if not given immediate treatment. Consequently, the dog requires a commitment from an owner to provide the love and attention it deserves. - 20511

Unique Content Article: Poodles For Sale Online

Poodles For Sale Online

by Lisa A Collins

One of the main reasons people start looking for Poodles for sale is that they do not want the dog hair mess all over the carpets, the furniture, the beds and just about everywhere else you can think of. A lot of people are allergic to dog hair so dogs that shed everywhere can cause a major problem for most people. Also, it can be embarrassing to always be walking out of the house covered in dog hair from head to toe and not even realize it.

Also, not to mention that these little Poodle puppies serve as excellent alarm systems in that they will gladly bark to alert you to the presence of a stranger. While they may not be the vicious attack dogs that most people picture, Poodles do want to make sure their territory is protected and they will do everything possible to make sure that happens.

Finding Poodles for sale is never hard at all, as these dogs can often be found in many locations, such as in the local newspaper and online. There are many pros and cons though to each method so once you understand both you will just pick a way that is best for you and your needs. Before you know it you will find many Poodle Puppies that you will fall in love with.

But, if time is not on your side at the moment because a special occasion is quickly approaching, you may you have no choice but to search the Internet for Poodles for sale, as that would always provide the biggest selection. Just be careful that you really try and get to know the breeder to determine some sort of trust factor level. It is always better to be safe then sorry as you are more in likely spending a lot of money.

It can be hard to wait patiently for Poodles for sale to appear in the local paper and that is why so many people turn to online ads. Not only would they get their Poodle puppies faster because of how many are available, but also they get a bigger selection then what may be available in the small town they live in.

But then there are always the people who need instant success and when they want to see Poodles for sale, they want to see them now. A lot of people do not like waiting or possibly just do not have the time if the puppy is a gift for someone. When looking for Poodle puppies online you will be surprised with the many different types and colors that you will come across.

Also, if in a time crunch, it is a great way to find the perfect puppy for a gift for someone you love. The only real problems with finding Poodle puppies online is that you are not able to see them in person, which means you really do not know what you paid for until it arrives.

Try to see what communications you get from the breeder and always go with your gut feeling. The last thing you want is to find that you paid big money for a poor unhealthy dog that was mistreated or poorly bred. - 20511

Unique Content Article: Good Advice On Raising A Siberian Husky Rescue Dog

Good Advice On Raising A Siberian Husky Rescue Dog

by Andrew Preston

Congratulations on your choice on bringing a Siberian Husky rescue dog home! You are probably wondering what you can expect from your Siberian Husky rescue dog in terms of behavior or if there are any other surprises you can look forward to and that depends on the abuse they endured in the past but there is some good advice for you to follow that will help you make the transition a lot smoother for not only and your family but for your Siberian Husky rescue dog as well.

The Siberian Husky was bred as a hard working dog that always likes to be active and the chances are that it has been caged up for some time since its rescue so the very first thing you need to do is let your new Siberian Husky rescue dog run. Sometimes this need to run can cause problems with the Siberian Husky rescue dog as a family pet but you will need to get used to this and set aside time every day for the dog to be able to run and be outside.

As part of its origin the Siberian Husky is a working dog and while the Siberian Husky rescue dog can make a loyal and devoted pet they still have that sense of duty built into them and that

can show itself when they take it upon themselves to protect your family from what the dog perceives as threats. It is up to you to socially train your Husky to know how to interact well with other people and animals so that conflicts can be avoided because these dogs can be as dangerous as they are loyal.

Regular vet appointments for your Siberian Husky rescue dog are very important because even though the wounds of abuse have healed it is difficult to see the long term physical effects and your vet will need to stay updated on your dog so make sure you get your dog there as often as you can. The Husky can develop health problems such as difficulty with digestion or with their eyesight and while these conditions are not usually the result of abuse it is better to be sure.

It is possible that your Siberian Husky rescue dog could already be housebroken by the time you get it which is one less thing you have to be concerned about. If you find that your Siberian Husky rescue dog is not housebroken then you can use the standard housebreaking methods used for most dogs and you should get the desired results with those methods. A Siberian Husky trains very well and as long as you remember to not punish the dog during training you should get good and positive results for your housebreaking training.

The Husky will respond quickly to training but remember to not use punishment during training because that could set back any housebreaking training as the Siberian Husky rescue dog does not respond well to punishment.

When you decided to adopt a Siberian Husky rescue dog you did a wonderful thing and if you make sure it gets the care and attention it needs then you will have a loyal and happy pet for many years to come. Remember to use only positive reinforcement with your new Siberian Husky rescue dog as the Siberian Husky does not respond well at all to punishment and you want to build a positive relationship with your new dog to ensure a healthy and happy life together. - 20511
