Choosing a dog to become your household's pet may seem like an easy assignment. There are so many dogs that you can decide from whether you go to the shelter to adopt or you contact a breeder. The reality is that unless you adopt a matured dog you will need to do some research since every single puppy in the world is completely adorable and it is too simple to fall in love with a puppy.

But puppies grow up to be adult dogs and the grown dog is the one who is going to be your pet for many years to come. You need to contemplate about what you are looking for in a dog and make sure that the breed that you choose fits those wishes and needs.

Think about your family and any limits you may have. A smaller house of an apartment may be better for a smaller dog while a dwelling with a huge fenced backyard will do better for a bigger dog. Also be concerned about time constraints, if you are not home for hours at a time because of work and school you probably do not want a dog that desires a great deal of companionship. Ideally the best solution is when you, your children and the dog are all happy and satisfied.

Educate yourself about the diverse breeds of dogs. The breed will many times affect the personality and temperament of your pet. Some breeds are one-owner animals and they pick their favorite human being in the family, other breeds are doting|affectionate|/spin] to everyone in the family. Things like that are things you must consider when you are choosing a pet for your family.

Contemplate whether you want a purebred dog or a mixed breed. A mixed breed or "mutt" as they are generally referred to often have strong healthiness and they make wonderful pets. One thing about a purebred is that you will know beforehand about the character of the breed and any probable health concerns.

There are also the "designer hybrids" which are typically a cross between two purebreds of different breeds. They more often than not have funny names like the Poogle, which is a cross between a poodle and a beagle or a Pugalier, which is a cross between a pug and a Cavalier spaniel. Of course there are also many others.

As you are looking at breeds take into thought the personality of that breed. Will it match with your family? If your family is more laid back a hyperactive dog may not fit very well and on the other hand, if your family is young and rambunctious you may not want a dog that is laid back and won't play. Get a dog whose personality is like your family's behavior.

Whether you go to the shelter and adopt or contact a breeder you want to get a dog that will suit your family's traits and everyday life. Getting a dog is a commitment and you want to give it enough deliberation so that both you and your dog are content for many years to come. - 20511

Not all dogs are made the same. The differences in every individual vary from one another and the same goes with the variation among the disposition and character of each dog types.

Finding the right match between the dog breed and the keeper or household is the key to success in bringing a dog into your home. Dogs come in many varieties that are naturally introduced to the dog world as well as those made specifically by cross-breeding, such as a Labra doodle (a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle).

Obviously, asking yourself with - "what size of dog can your home handle?" is the mere question that you should consider. A large dog can have adequate space to run and play when placed in a home in the suburbs with a large yard. Do you want a dog that is sturdy, yet cuddly and plays well with kids?

Are you hoping to get a guard dog for your home or business? Are you the competitive type of individual that you even want to train a dog that you can compete with others as a show dog? Or maybe what you want as a pet is something that could remain as satisfied being inside your apartment with a size enough to roam around your place as well as the kind of dog that can be true to you and would love the feel of your cuddle during the evening that you would find yourself relaxing in your couch. These are practical considerations to think about as you search for the right dog breed.

How many people live in your home? If you are a single person, you might want a pet that needs not much of an attention and can be left alone inside your house while you go working all throughout the day and he would just keep himself busy by playing with his toys or sleeping all day.

The sizes of the dog breeds in terms of their weight come in the ranges of under ten pounds for smaller dogs, 11-25 pounds is the typical weight of medium dogs, large dogs may weigh twenty six to fifty pounds and the weight of about 51-80 pounds is for extra large dogs. There are extremely large dogs which can weigh up to one hundred to one hundred and eighty pounds such as the Mastiffs and St. Bernards.

Is your furniture tough enough to stand anything that a dog can do? When you are trying to make a decision with regards to the perfect choice of the dog breed, expand your view of the dog in terms of its future size and not only as you see him as a pup. You shouldn't be shocked to see that your big dogs would consume a lot more food than you do. Bringing home a dog like a Mastiff means having to deal with a costly dog food and care so you may need another job to pay off your bills or be able to give him what he needs.

Catering to the required care of your dog is another important thing that you should think about. When it comes to grooming and care, some dog breeds may need to have a great deal of it compared to other types. Show dogs like poodles may call for a great deal of time spent in the spa as well as getting the fancy coats that even you won't have. Even ordinary household dogs may need weekly (or even daily) grooming to keep their coats from tangles and to preserve good physical health.

A weekly or even daily grooming should not be deprived to ordinary household dogs since they might need it to untangle their coats and to keep themselves in a good physical health. The Gentle Giant and the Water Rescue Hero, the Newfoundland Dog

Having a Newfoundland in almost every water vessel in Canada almost seems a part of additional safety. People who know the characteristics of this giant breed would surely understand why. Those who aren't so familiar with the breed, be ready to learn amazing facts.

The Newfoundland is a breed of dog that was developed in Canada's Newfoundland territory. It is said that this breed is the descendant of another Canadian native, the St. John breed. The Newfoundland is said to have been established as a breed as early as 1400s and this is backed up by records that state the sightings of a superb swimmer and intelligent working dog in the Great Banks of Newfoundland.

When it comes to swimming, the Newfoundland is an unbeatable winner and this ability is often used for water rescue missions. In fact, there are many recorded events that prove of the Newfoundland's supremacy in the waters. In the late 1800's, a woman named Anne Harvey of Isle de Morts, her father and their Newfoundland named Hairyman, saved 180 Irish immigrants from a sinking ship.

In the early 1900's, it is said that a Newfoundland dog rescued 92 people from a shipwreck during a blizzard by means of helping bring the survivor's buoyancy device to the shore. Even the great figures of history are known to have been helped by the Newfoundland and this includes Napoleon Bonaparte when he almost drowned from escaping the island Elba if not for a fisherman's Newfoundland who kept him afloat until he reached safety.

The Wild West discoverers Lewis and Clark also brought with them during the quest a Newfoundland named Seaman. The Royal Rifles of Canada also have the Newfoundland as a hero and it is named Sgt. Gander. Sgt. Gander's heroic deed happened in the Battle of Hong Kong when he sacrificed himself by means of carrying away the grenade that's meant for the wounded soldiers.

For some, Newfoundland looks like a St. Bernard but actually, it is the other way around. They may be of the same size and color at times but what separate the Newfoundland are its webbed feet that allows him to swim efficiently in the water. Its lung capacity is also outstanding as it can stand swimming extremely long distances.

The Newfoundland's thick, oily and water-resistant coat protects its body from cold temperatures and this allows him to stay in freezing water for hours. Unlike most dogs "doggy paddle" style of swimming, the Newfoundland actually swims in a breast stroke-like fashion and it gives him more power and speed in the water. His lips and flews are droopy giving it a tendency to drool excessively; however, this allows him to breathe when his mouth is full of water that are brought on by waves during swimming.

Even though this dog's size is enormous, its heart is full of benevolence, gentleness and kindness that people call him the "gentle giant". Towards its owner, it is very protective but never aggressive to any kind of human and animals. The Important Role You Play in Stopping Animal Abuse

Hey you, yes, you! Do you know the signs to look for when it comes to animal abuse?! Do you do your part when it comes to protecting our furry four-legged friends? Unfortunately, animal abuse still exists in our world today but with education and team work, maybe, just maybe, we can make it a thing of the past.

There are many humane education programs available that teach people the importance of recognizing animal abuse and how to stop it. In 2008, the ASPCA partnered with a program called Do Something! Do Something is an on-line community aimed at teenagers. It is a place for teens to gather (via the internet) so that they may discuss ways to make the world a better place. Animal welfare is one of the "hot topics" that is discussed on a daily basis. It is one of the top concerns of teens today (thank goodness!).

Do Something's teen-friendly web content covering animal welfare is quite popular and a tremendous success at offering "humane education." Since inception, ten $500 grants have been awarded by the ASPCA to teens who have stepped up and implemented their own animal welfare projects. It's tremendously encouraging to me to see our children taking such an active role in important issues today.

If you're wondering what "humane education" is, the ASPCA and Do Something teach us how to care for animals both in our homes and in our communities. The premise fosters respect, empathy and kindness for all beings (on two feet, 4 feet or more), and teaches responsible stewardship for the environment and its inhabitants. The one overriding goal of humane education is to make our planet a more humane and kind place to live.

Changing the world requires help and contribution from people just like you. If making a difference and improving the world we'll hand down to our children appeals to you, you may be wondering how you can get started. It starts with little things that can ultimately make you a contributing member of the community looking out for animal welfare.

Know who to call if you witness or suspect animal cruelty or abuse. Many metropolitan areas have enforcement agents who have the authority and resources to act in animal cruelty cases. New York City, for example, relies on the ASPCA's animal cruelty officers. If you aren't sure who to call should you witness abuse, contact your local police non-emergency number for guidance.

Once you know who to call, know what circumstances warrant calling. Obviously, witnessing a dog being beaten represents a justifiable situation for calling, but dogs left chained outside without adequate food or water, for excessive durations or for hours during cold winter months also warrant a call for help. All you need do is youre your eyes open for issues of clear neglect or abuse.

Education starts at home! If you have children, talk to them about the importance of treating animals (all animals!) with kindness and respect. Teach them that animals are living creatures that have the ability to feel pain, joy and sadness. Educating children about the importance of humane treatment is VERY important, after all, they will take these valuable life lessons into adulthood!

Should you witness animal abuse, avoid getting involved directly. Call the authorities and let them deal with the situation. It is difficult to stand back while abuse is going on, but you expose yourself and your family to the risk of retaliation should you try to take matters into your own hands. Responsible agencies will act even if the report is made anonymously.

Fight for stronger animal cruelty laws! Jump on board and join the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade! If society implements stronger cruelty laws and harsher penalties maybe, just maybe, people will take the humane treatment of animals more seriously. Animal abuse is no laughing matter; make sure your voice is heard! The best way to do this is by signing anti-cruelty petitions and writing letters to your local legislators asking for tougher laws!

A real difference can be made by ordinary people just like you. It costs little or nothing to be a part of something bigger. Be aware, educate yourself and your children, know what action to take and get involved in programs that can change the lives of animals for the better. They give us so much love and friendship and do so much to make the world a beautiful place to live. Don't you think they're worth the effort? - 20511

What to Avoid in Your Dog Food

How much time do you spend on picking your dog food? Do you understand how to read the labels and do you know what each ingredient really is?

While doing research on possible cause for dog seizures I started to investigate dog food ingredients.. I found out the dog food industry has some scary secrets that they wish would remain unknown to the general public. The problem is that now that I know I have decided I must tell the world.

I promise you I'm not going to give you a sale pitch for some high priced fancy dog food. I will explain to you how to learn how to look at the ingredients in your dog food and understand what they really are.

If you take simple steps and learn to feed your dogs healthy food, you can add around 8 years to their lives That would mean eight more years of tail wagging, kisses and unconditional love.

It took me many hours of research, but I did find a book that explained how to decode the secret language used on dog food labels. While it is true the FDA regulates dog food labeling, it does not use the same standards it uses for food prepared for people..

The weak dog food labeling regulations are a joke and the industry uses this weakness to hide ingredients that are harmful to our dogs but are added to enhance the tase to make our dogs want to eat it.. These regulations allow the pet food industry to play with words and unless the pet owner educates themselves there is no way to tell what is really in the dog food..

For example a dog food named Chicken dog food would have around 70% chicken (of some sort) but if its named Chicken flavored dog food then it probably has 0% chicken of any kind in it.

If the name of the food contains the word "with" then by law that food only needs to contain around 3% of that ingredient. The words "Dinner" or "Nuggets" along with many more words all change the quality of the dog food.

Watching dog food commercials you would think that they only use quality meat, but in reality most foods contain byproducts marked unfit for human consumption.

Some companies in the commercial pet food industry are adding waste leftovers from human food processing plants to add protein to their dog foods. We could not eat these by-products so why would we want to feed it to our dogs?

The problem here is the FDA allows the pet food industry to label these ingredients in such a way that we think they are healthy. If your dog food has an ingredient listed as "Dried Egg Products" you might think that is healthy. After all eggs are a good source of protein, but dried egg products are the leftovers from the egg industry that are deemed not fit for human consumption.

It is easy to be fooled by the healthy sounding ingredients listed on your dog food label, but once you understand what you're reading your see these toxic by-products ingredient have been sugar coated with a healthy looking name.

After doing my own research I have decided I needed to switch my dogs to a homemade dog food, but I know that is not particle for everyone. Therefore it is even more important to understand exactly what is in your dog food. - 20511

The Mighty King of Hearts, The Airedale Terrier

The terriers are known for being fearless and ferocious when they need be and these qualities make them distinct from other dog breeds. If you learn that this group has what they call a king, would you think this particular breed is extremely ferocious and exasperatingly stubborn? In this case, the answer is no, because the alleged king is extreme not in negative behaviors but in devotion, size, intelligence and versatility.

The terrier group of the canine kingdom is notorious for their viciousness and fearless disposition when it comes to defending their dignity. It's surprising to learn then that this group has a particular breed that they hail as the king. Being a king, however, does not mean that this breed is the most vicious and cruel but instead, it is the largest in size, warmest in devotion, and highest in intelligence and versatility.

The Airedale Terrier came from the valley of Aire, England during the 19th century. The breed was the result of cross breeding between small terriers and Otterhounds by the Yorkshire men of the area. The result of this effort was the Airedale that possesses the terriers' ferocity and keen hunting instincts and the Otterhounds' magnificence in the water.

During the first years of its existence, the Airedale Terrier worked as rodent and bird hunter, otter catcher and game retriever. For the family that owns it, it served as a reliable companion and, because it possesses the natural traits of a terrier, became a superb watchdog. The breed wasn't really popular until the outbreak of World War I when it was discovered that it can be of great use in the battlefields.

During the war, the Airedale became a military dog, peace keeping aid and many other positions in the armed forces and medical organizations. Two great nations, Great Britain and Germany, became the first two countries to use the Airedale as their police and military dogs. All in all, the breed served as guards, messengers and ambulance during the chaotic years of war.

Being a war messenger, the Airedale became very admirable as it delivers dispatches even if its severely wounded from the battles. Many dying soldiers were also rescued among the dead in the battlefield because of this dog's accurate sense of smell. As a guard, the Airedale is courageous and would stand its ground against injustice therefore it became excellent post watchers during the war.

These successes of the Airedale werent kept from the masses and so it became popular among citizens including presidents Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. People also added the title King of Hearts to this brave and devoted war hero and up to this time, the title remains unchallenged. Moreover, since the war ended, the Airedale has been rounding up the dog sports circuit and has won many awards since then.

The Airedale is the biggest of all terriers and possesses a double coat that is course and wiry on the outside yet smooth and fine underneath. It also possesses a distinct densely coated beard and a densely and longer-haired legs. The Airedale Terrier is indeed a true King because not only has it shown leadership in the most difficult of times but everyday, until now, it remained regal and magnificent in its actions and physique. - 20511
