Newfoundland: The Gentle Giant of the Canine World

It seems as if that every maritime vessel in Canada feels the imperative need to include a Newfoundland in their crew. To those who know the Newfoundland, this fact is undisputable. For those who does not know this wonderful breed that well, be ready to get to know the greatest dog breed of the waters, the Newfoundland.

The Newfoundland is a breed of dog that was developed in Canada's Newfoundland territory. It is said that this breed is the descendant of another Canadian native, the St. John breed. The Newfoundland is said to have been established as a breed as early as 1400s and this is backed up by records that state the sightings of a superb swimmer and intelligent working dog in the Great Banks of Newfoundland.

Water rescue is the Newfoundlands forte and when it comes to swimming, it remains the champion. There are several records that prove of the Newfoundland's supremacy in the water and it is further proven by many rescue events of today. One account shares a girl named Anne Harvey from Isle de Morts, her father and her Newfoundland Hairyman who altogether helped rescue 180 Irish immigrants from a ship wreck.

In the early 1900's, it is said that a Newfoundland dog rescued 92 people from a shipwreck during a blizzard by means of helping bring the survivor's buoyancy device to the shore. Even the great figures of history are known to have been helped by the Newfoundland and this includes Napoleon Bonaparte when he almost drowned from escaping the island Elba if not for a fisherman's Newfoundland who kept him afloat until he reached safety.

The famous explorers Lewis and Clark also had a Newfoundland pet named Seaman which they kept as a company during their exploration of the Wild West. Sgt. Gander, a Newfoundland breed, was made a mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada in commemoration of its heroic act during the Battle of Hong Kong. Sgt. Gander allegedly carried away a grenade that was hurled at some wounded Canadian soldiers.

Many people perceive the Newfoundland to look like a St. Bernard but in fact, it is the other way around. They are both similar in size but the Newfoundland is distinct for its webbed feet giving it maximum propulsion at every swim. It also has an unbelievable lung capacity that allows it to endure long distances of swimming.

The Newfoundland's thick, oily and water-resistant coat protects its body from cold temperatures and this allows him to stay in freezing water for hours. Unlike most dogs "doggy paddle" style of swimming, the Newfoundland actually swims in a breast stroke-like fashion and it gives him more power and speed in the water. His lips and flews are droopy giving it a tendency to drool excessively; however, this allows him to breathe when his mouth is full of water that are brought on by waves during swimming.

The Newfoundland is famously known as the "gentle giant" because of its benevolent, gentle and kind disposition. It is very courageous and protective but it is never fierce. It is important for you to know how to stop your dog from biting. This is because you do not want your dog to bite other people, like your kids as well as any of your visitors when they are in your home. And obviously, you do not want your dog to bite you too. Regardless of whether it is a new pet or it is a pet that has been with you for a number of years already, if they are having a problem with biting, you need to ensure that you deal with the issue as soon as possible.

You certainly will not want your dog to go ahead and bite anyone outside there. If that happens, it can have serious consequences, especially if the victim is seriously injured, because of the biting. This can actually result in your dog being put down. No dog owners will ever want to see this happening to their dog. This is the main reason for making sure that you correct your dog biting behavior as early as possible.

Tips To Curb Dog Biting Problems

There are a number of ways that may help you stop your dog from biting but there are quite a few that have the tendency to be more effective. One option is to give your dog chew toys. It might sound too simple, isn't it? Well, a lot of pet owners just don't realized how simple it can be. If you do not give your dog any chew toys, he is only going to look for other things to nip and bite on.

You also want to make sure that you begin your training very early on. Of course if you get a dog that is already in adulthood you are not going to be able to go back in time and train them as a puppy, but you still want to train them as soon as possible then and not leave this any longer than you absolutely have to.

The earlier on that you start the training with the dog, the better off you are going to be and the easier you are going to find it for the dog to learn.

Another alternative is to use a muzzle on the dog's mouth till they learn not to bite people. Some people might believe that it is a cruel thing to do but it is not going to cause any harm to the dog. You are only trying to educate your dog that it is not okay for them to open their mouth and bite people.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Celebrating Your Kitten's Birthday

Pets are people too. At least that's what you'll hear from pet lovers like me. Have you ever seen a person letting their dog eat from a dinner plate? Have you ever seen a pet wearing a personalized outfit specially made for it? Have you ever had a cat die on you or seen a close buddy who lost theirs? Pets become such an important part of our lives that it is very easy to see why people sometimes treatthem like normal members of the family.

Do you know any couples who haven't had children of their own? There are plenty of American women and men who have never had any children. Some adults just aren't capable of fathering children for one reason or another. Some individuals have chosen to be bachelors or otherwise single. Sometimes single adults find themselves desiring the gratification of raising a child. If having an actual baby isn't an option for whatever reason, some of these decent people might choose to substitute a pet as if it were their child.

Can you really blame these decent people for wanting that kind of extra special affection in their life? Dogs and cats are so lovable that one can easily understand how they fill that roll. Some of you probably have friends or relatives who treat their pet like it was another one of their own children. It is just their way of filling that need.

If your cat is going to be just like a regular member of the family, why not have a birthday party for her on her birthday? Just do what you would do for any other child. You can make her a special birthday cake. Put candles in it and help her blow it out. Sing happy birthday to her just like you would a child. Then when you're finished, go ahead and let her tear open her presents. If it is a kitten, you should wrap some kind of catnip filled object in loose wrapping paper so she will be able to tear it open like a child.

Get out your digital video recorder. Don't forget to record the special moment so you can post it online. Look at how many other pet lovers have posted videos of their pets online there. There are some really funny ones with dogs on there. If you don't believe me go look for yourself.

How to Prevent Puppies from Biting

No matter how fun and rewarding having a puppy may be, its going to be a nightmare without proper training " especially when it comes to biting. There are a lot of techniques out there on how to stop puppies from biting, and people come to me to ask for advice. Basically what I tell them is that puppies, at a young age, are always apt to bite and chew.

Only when the puppys biting really gets out of hand should you think about steps how to get it to stop biting.

You can use water as a simple obedience training to get your puppy to stop biting. Basically what you do is get a water gun or sprayer, catch the dog doing something wrong, then lightly spray it. Its effective, especially when the puppy is caught off-guard.

Of course, for this to work you have to be around your puppy enough so that you can quickly catch and punish it whenever its doing something wrong. If you cant be around enough to catch your puppy when it is biting, your punishment will be inconsistent, and it wont work. Consistent water sprays are effective in training your dog to stop biting, but inconsistencies wont help your puppy understand its punishment.

Another good technique to stop puppies from biting is called the yelp approach, and is used to make the puppy stop biting you or other people and not items around the house. Basically, instead of saying NO or getting angry at your puppy, you yelp when they bite you.

By yelping, you make your puppy think that they bit too hard, and they will stop biting. This makes use of dog mentality (dogs also bite when they are playful), its effective in keeping your dog from biting, and it doesnt confuse or intimidate your puppy because you dont get upset at it.

Yet another technique is to use orange peels to keep your puppy from biting. Dogs dont really like orange peels, so you can put orange peels on whatever items your puppy likes to bite, and those will make your puppy keep away from that item. If you dont have orange peels then white pepper can do the job too. After your puppy has been experiencing orange peels for some time, it will learn to keep away from these items.

Anyway, these techniques presented above are effective in preventing your puppy from biting, but do remember that most puppies outgrow biting when they reach maturity. These techniques presented above are only supplements, to make sure your puppy does outgrow the habit. - 20511

House Training A Dog Techniques

Two of the things that you will have to get in the habit of exercising is will and patience. These are needed along with consistency to get positive results when you are house training a dog. Even though you will not be able to watch your dog around the clock, there are effective ways you can send a positive message to them to stop wetting the floor when you are not present.

Accidents can't be avoided with puppies. During the early months of their growing stages, they don't have complete bowel and bladder control. They will tinkle will everywhere. That will change as they grow.

To start out, find a suitable, out of the way area to make a restricted home for the dog. Cover the floor with paper. Also cover the floor with their food, water, bed, and any play toys they enjoy. This is the first test. Typically, your dog will not potty on his bed or on his food or water. They may not care about the toys at the time.

This is a great way to begin training. The dog will begin to use the paper somewhere away from the places he enjoys or that are comforting to him. Finally, they will find a spot that they will always do it in. This will be their own self-discovered personal bathroom.

After the dog has consistently used the bathroom in their own designated place in their secluded habitat, they will be ready for phase two of the training. Let them have the run of the house. Before you do, put paper in various places around the house and take the dog to each one. Let the dog out of the secluded area after they have singled out a place in their habitat to use the restroom. When they do it on the floor, put their nose close to it, as they are sensitive to the scent, then take them to the paper.

Before you know it, your dog will get accustomed to using the paper. Once they do, move it to various areas in the house to train your dog to find the paper and use it regardless of the location. When they use the paper properly on a consistent basis, reward them for their excellent learning abilities and behavior. This is the first phase of the successful completion of your dog's training. Do you see how easy house training a dog can be?

The next feat is to finally get your dog to stop going in the house and head outside instead. This will be easy because dogs love the great outdoors. Position all of the paper on the floor near the doors leading to your backyard.

At this time, the dog is trained to use the paper. When he uses the paper as you have done such a good job training him to do, put their nose near it and point to the door. Then open the door and let him run out and play. By consistently repeating this process, your dog will soon catch on and will begin scratching the door when it is time to go potty. - 20511

Dog Food Recipes Tailored for Your Dog.

Even though you can find dog food recipes on the Internet, not all of them will meet the nutritional needs of your dog.

It doesn't take long to see that dogs are healthier when on a homemade dog food diet, but there are many things you need to understand before picking a dog food recipe.

The proper amount of Proteins, Fats, Carbohydrates, Minerals, Vitamins and Water are all the basic nutrients needed for a healthy dog. The key is you need to learn to feed your dog a balanced diet that includes the nutrients listed above.

Every dog is different and that is why commercially processed dog food fails miserably when it comes to keeping our dogs healthy. There is no way they can come up with a commercially made dog food recipe that will be right for every dog.

With home made dog food recipes you can tailor the dog food recipe to the age, breed and current health of your dog. You make enough to last a week or two and by freezing it you beat the need for preservatives.

While I'm going to include a few dog food recipes below I can't stress how important it is to learn how to recognize the needs of your dog and therefore selecting dog food recipes that will be the most beneficiary for him.

Meat and Grain Menu 2 cups brown rice -- cooked 2/3 cup meat --lean 2 teaspoons lard -- or veggie oil 1/4 cup Vegetables --grated, no onion *Supplements Mix the above. You can cook the meat if you want to, use your judgment. Serve slightly warm. *For supplements, add 2 tsp. powder and 1 tsp. oil to feed daily- this is for a 5-15 lb. dog, and the book instructs to use double supplements for a puppy.

Divine Doggy Dinner 1/2 pound ground beef -- or turkey, chicken, lamb 1/4 cup cooked rice 1 small potato 1/4 cup green beans -- about 5-8 beans 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder Brown the meat in a pan. When completely cooked, drain the fat. Add the cooked rice; mix well. Set aside. Cut the potato and beans into small bite-sized pieces. Place in a pot with water; bring to a boil. Simmer until veggies are tender (about 15-20 minutes). Drain. Add the vegetables to the meat mixture. Add garlic powder; toss thoroughly under low heat. Let the dinner cool thoroughly before serving to prevent burning. Yield: about 2 dinners - 20511

Chow Chow: An Ancient Lion-like Dog Breed of China

The Chow Chow is undeniably one unique dog breed and it is often defined by experts as a dog having the nobility of a lion, the jocosity of a panda, independence and grace of a cat, appeal of a teddy bear and loyalty and devotion of a true dog breed. These characteristics and 4000 years of existence is what make this breed mystical and interesting to many fanciers. The Chow mainly flourished in China and innumerable ancient Chinese art illustrated its popularity during those times.

Latest studies have revealed that the Chow is one of the most ancient breeds of dog and that it is the product of evolution of the wolf breed that resided in the northern regions of China and Mongolia. Studies also conclude that the Chow is a former resident of the Arctic and migrated to Siberia, China and Mongolia. Other studies also state that the Chow is the predecessor of some of the modern dog breeds including the Pomeranian, Keeshond, Norwegian Elkhound and Samoyed.

During its time in ancient China, the Chow was used in hunting and was assigned to pull carts and boat guarding. One interesting fact states that in ancient China, an emperor owned 2500 pairs of Chows which accompanied all of his 10,000 hunters during hunting. Additionally, Chow's meat is also considered as a delicacy by the Chinese and until now, dog meats are still being eaten in their country. The late President Calvin Coolidge also had a Chow named Timmy and their companionship was popular during his time.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Chow Chow and therefore many of this breed experiences mishandling and wrong treatment. As a result, Chow Chows that experience this kind of environment become ill-tempered towards strangers, animals and even to the master himself. The Chow Chow is a unique creature and requires a rather special kind of care so if you're a novice in handling a Chow Chow, be sure to research good in order to provide the correct terms of care it needs.

The Chow Chow is dignified and noble in temperament and is generally a one-person kind of dog therefore it often chooses to be alone when there are a lot of chaotic people around it. It doesn't mean, however, that this breed does not like to socialize for it does love meeting new people only when it is trained to be so at an early stage. Chows who are raised to be social can live with cats and other dogs inside the house and can be accepting to strangers but only when being introduced gently by the master.

A Chow owner must be a good leader and by this it means that the owner should be consistent, firm, confident and patient in handling and training the dog. If the owner fails to impose that he/she is the leader of the pack, the Chow will manifest bad behaviors and these include aggressiveness, irritability and small dog syndrome wherein it tends to act as the leader of humans and not the other way around. The Chow is also interested in new activities and will love to participate in training sessions so long as it is not repetitive as Chows tend to get bored easily.

The Chow Chow is not one of the best breeds in terms of obedience and intelligence and in fact it only ranks 76th in Stanley Cohen's The Intelligence of Dogs. For the most pat of the day, the Chow is rather inactive and just stays indoors to rest and be placid. This temperament allows it to be suitable in an apartment style of living; however, it still needs daily exercise in order for it to be healthy mentally and physically.

What gives the Chow Chow a lion-like appearance is its big ruffle around its neck and its double coat of dense hair all over its body. It is also unique physically through its bluish-black/purplish tongue, stiff gait due straight back legs, and a hairy and curled tail.
