The Basics Of German Shepherd Training

There are few things cuter than a German shepherd puppy, but without some serious training, that pup may grow into a dog that is difficult to control. The size and appearance of an adult German shepherd is an intimidating sight to many, but a dog that does not obey his master's command can terrorize the home and neighborhood.

That is why it is so important to begin German shepherd training from the first day you bring your pup home from the breeder, to ensure your dog grows into an enjoyable member of your family. Check out these tips on German shepherd training to start you and your puppy on the right foot together.

Who's The Master?

I sure hope that its the human owner. German shepherds are pack animal dogs ever since, so you will need to make sure that it is known to them that you are the leader of the pack, or the Alpha dog as it is important that you get obedience and respect from your pup. You can do this by starting with basic commands with your dog such as Sit and come and giving him the praise he needs when he obeys and follows your instruction.

Do not ever allow your dog to nip or snarl at you. Make sure that if and when he does, a firm shake on the scruff of his neck is given and that he is to be in his crate fro at last ten minutes without giving him any attention. Once he acknowledges the fact that you are his pack leader, the rest of the German shepherd training should run smoothly.

Consistency Is Key

Just like little kids, dogs respond to a fair and consistent instruction. If you do not like the idea of your dog jumping up or climbing on the sofa in your living room, do not make him sit there at all. If you want your dog to listen and obey your command to go to his crate, be sure to enforce instruction every time you offer it to him.

Consistency in the home will add to a dog's security and comfort level, which in turn will make him more likely to obey you. Determine what the house rules will be before you even bring your puppy home from the breeder and then stick with them, no matter what.

Give Lots of Praise

Remember that a lot of positive reinforcement in training will really help as dogs are most likely to respond to praises even though they get to be reprimanded during the training session. Be it whether in an obedience class or you training your dog yourself, it is always important to acknowledge the positive behavior that your dog does.

You can have this done by using a cheerful voice and a lot of positive attention. You may also choose to use food treats to help your dog learn and know a new command. Whatever style of reinforcement you have, make sure that you do it as often as possible to strengthen positive behavior.

The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The native of Ireland, the Wheaten Terrier, is an adorable and fluffy breed of dog that's famous with many families around the world. Before it received international fame, however, this dog used to work as a herder, watchdog, flock guard and rat hunter in Ireland. Today, it is a prized family pet of many people and a valuable contender of dog sports such as agility, obedience and tracking competitions.

The Wheaten terrier is none or minimal shedder type of dog and that its coat is actually called hair and not fur. This hair has four varieties: Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English, and American; the Irish variety being thinner and silkier than the American variety. And like human hair, the Wheaten's hair also constantly grows out therefore it needs to be trimmed or cut regularly.

As an adult, the Wheaten terrier's hair is color wheat or white but the white color is not given much weight by the kennel clubs. As a puppy, this breed may have a brown, red or mahogany coat but others may be born wheat-colored or white-colored already. Those puppies born with dark hairs will grow up to become wheaten-colored because the dark hair will grow out and eventually fall off to be replaced by the wheat colored hair.

Other dogs require regular hair brushing as a form of grooming but brushing the Wheatens coat will make it fuzzy. Instead, the best way to groom this breed is by combing, using a wide-toothed comb, which is to be done regularly or daily. Hair combing should start from puppyhood until adulthood.

Teaching the Wheaten tricks and commands is quite easy as this breed is intelligent and can pick up easily. This breed is animated, playful, loving and gentle towards children and playful around other animals. It is also soft-tempered, approachable and confident that you can bring this dog to any gathering without fearing it will aggress other animals.

The Wheaten is a friendly breed and in fact, it is very friendly it has its own unique way of greeting people. The Wheaten would jump up and lick a person's face when it likes him or her and this approach is called, the "wheaten greeting". Towards strangers, this dog is not aggressive but it will bark at incoming people, making it a good watchdog.

This creature is a straightforward dog that needs straightforward master therefore; the owner should display leadership in forms of firm and consistent approach, and patient disposition. The dog can learn quickly when it is guided by such approach. Moreover, this dog is mostly inactive inside the house and so an apartment setting would be fine for it as long as it still gets to exercise daily outside.

There is no proved nor concluded ancestor for this breed but it is said that it is related to the Kerry Blue Terrier. This breed had been flourishing in the Irish countryside for decades before the Irish Kennel Club recognized it in 1937. The first batch of the Wheaten terriers is brought to the US in 1946 and one of its famous breeder is Lydia Vogel. In 1943, the British Kennel Club recognized it as a breed and in 1973; the AKC admitted it finally as a member. - 20511

The Talking Dog of France, The Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is described physically as a dog having short legs, a long body, droopy eyes and flappy long ears. You might be familiar with this breed for often, it is seen in many artworks depicting a floppy- eared dog accompanying French personalities in their everyday lives. This breed was first develop in France from two different French dog breeds and became popular in this country first before coming to other parts of the world.

This breed has an excellent sense of smell and this gift was often used by hunters in small game hunting. Intentionally bred to have osteochondrodysplasia or dwarfism, the Basset is a perfect hunter of small creatures inside holes and burrows. It is amazing to think that despite its shortness, the Basset can actually reach taller heights such as table tops, however, due to its heavy body and short legs, it cannot keep itself afloat in the water and therefore owners should be careful not to allow this creature to swim.

In the olden days, the Basset was used largely for hunting purposes. But today, this breed is only limited to show ring competitions, dog sports and family companionship. Good thing is that, some group wishes to bring back the use of this breed as a hunter and so they organized hunting groups such as The American Hunting Basset Association.

This breed is amazingly talented in terms of whining, too, because whenever it does whine, it seems to imitate "talking". Its talking sound gets higher and louder when it is not being paid attention to for a long time. Additionally, the Basset seems an enthusiastic participant of training lessons only if there were treats given as a reward.

Cute and adorable the Basset may seem but the low hanging ears and drooping eyes have disadvantages and sometimes lead to a fatal risk. The drooping eyes of the Basset cause mucus to build-up under the eyeballs and this collects dirt and bacteria causing the eyes to get infected. Its ears that are dangling freely to the ground and in food may catch or develop chronic diseases and some are potentially fatal.

The Basset commonly weighs 50 to 65 pounds, stands 12 to 15 inches and is heavier in bone mass than any other breed of dog. Its coat is short, hard and shiny but sheds excessively all year round. This dog is generally colored in tricolor (a combination of black, tan and white), red spots and white, solid red with white feet and tail, honey and white, and lemon and white.

Around children, the Basset makes a wonderful playmate for it is sweet, gentle, playful and devoted. It does not attack strangers too and is perfectly attached to the family that owns it. As a devoted family protector, the Basset howls or barks at pending negative vibes such as an incoming storm or sometimes, it may do this to simply imply that it needs something.

The name Basset came from the French word bas meaning short. The parent breed of this breed is said to be the Bloodhound Artisien Normand and Basset Artisien Normand, a couple of French dog breeds that are existent to this day. The Basset became popular through the portraits of Emperor Napoleon III, as the portraits are said to depict the royal being surrounded by his glorious Basset Hound pets. - 20511

Every Thing You Wanted to Know About Raising a Dog

Those that follow my articles and blog post know that I usually write about healthy dog food choices, but today I'm going deeper into what it is to be a good dog parent.

There isn't a day that goes by that some dog owner wishes they had an answer to simple questions like how to get their dog to sit, or how to prepare their dog for a trip. I know because of my dog's health problems I wanted to know if there was a more natural way of protecting him from ticks and fleas without using chemicals..

While doing my research on the best dog foods, I've found many answers to the above questions as well as just about anything you would want to know about making the experience of being a pet owner happier for you and your dog.

You could Google your questions and come up with hundreds of answers, but how do you know if you're dealing with facts or fiction? There are many scammers on the Net and the last thing we need to do is make a mistake when it comes to caring for our dogs

I often wondered what it would be like; if we could interview experts in the field about all the questions we might ever have about raising a healthier dog. It would be great if we could call a vet every time we have a question, but that is not particle.

Not to mention that your local vet is not an expert in every aspect of raising your pet, they don't have a clue when it comes to training questions for example.

Being a good dog parent even starts before you bring home your first dog, but where do you find information on selecting the best dog breed for your family?

If you have been a parent for some time you might would like to know the best way to care for an elderly dog, but where do you find expert advice on this topic?

Because it is so difficult to find good answers to pet problems, dog parents usually just do the best that they can, this sometimes works out, but often it ends up being bad for both them and their dogs.

Animal shelters across the country say that pet owners either pick the wrong breed, or they have a problem with the dog that they don't know how to correct when the leave their dog with them..

Finding The Best Pet Gate For Your Home

Owning a dog or puppy is often compared to being a parent. In many ways, the two are rather similar since this little creature, much like a baby, will depend upon you for absolutely all of their needs. Dogs must be fed, groomed, given veterinary care, potty trained, and even taught a few manners so that they will be happy, loving companions for many years to come.

Keeping your favorite best friend safe and sound involves taking the time and care to see that they are never in harm's way. Since it isn't physically possible to watch your dog all 24 hours of each and every day, a pet gate can help to keep them safely contained. But, with all of the different types of gates to choose from, many pet owners are confused as to which would be best for their home. The first and most important step in discerning which type of pet gate to buy is to make a visual inspection of your home, checking to see if there are any places that could be potentially dangerous for your pet, like the basement or kitchen areas.

Once you know exactly where you'll need to put up a pet gate, carefully consider if you may need more than one. Two gates may be needed if you have one or more rooms with two entryways. But luckily since most pet gates are easily moved, one is typically enough for most homes.

You should consider if your dog is craft and can either jump or climb over the gate so you will want to make sure that the gate is high enough to keep your dog contained. You can use the gate as a training tool for when your pooch is not in his or her crate. Pets go through separation anxiety so when you have them contained in a crate or in a room with the door closed, it can be hard on them emotionally.

A pet gate will give your dog enough room to move about and play when they aren't safely in their crate, and much like crates, pet gates can also help with the common issue of separation anxiety. While you and your pup will be in separate rooms, the gate will still allow them to see and hear you, giving them security that they're not away from you entirely. Keep the gate up blocking off the kitchen or bedroom while allowing your dog to still see and hear you, helping them to gradually learn to be away from you when necessary.

Depending on where and how pet gates are used, and the actual type of gate itself, they may be installed differently. Some people prefer their gates to be put in place permanently with brackets that are attached to a wall or doorframe while others would rather keep the gate mobile and able to be used in more than one location if needed.

Pet gates that are put in place using pressure as opposed to permanent brackets are widely preferred as they're easy to put up, take down, and also travel with if needed. Imagine visiting friend or relatives and having the ability to safely confine your pet in another area while still giving them room to roam as they like.

The very last thing to consider when it comes to choosing the best pet gate for your home is your budget. Pet gates may vary widely in price so it's always a good idea to know how much you're able to spend before going shopping. While a reasonable price is always ideal, you also, of course, will want to ensure the gate you purchase is durable, safe, and made of quality materials. And, if you have children in addition to pets, then you'll want to check to see that the gate you're interested in is also safe for use around children and that it's accompanied by a safety latch or lock. - 20511

How to Pick The Best Food Brands

Smart pet parents know that the food the feed their dogs have more to do with their overall health. That is why they are searching for the best dog food brands.Finding the best dog food brand should be as simple as reading the ingredients on the label.

It should be ease if that was true, but unless you can decrypt the code used by pet food industry, I fear that you are not getting success.

When you search for healthy foods for humans the task seems fairly easy, however when checking for the best dog food brands the task becomes very daunting and the facts are certainly unclear and confusing.

The issue is that pet food companies can use food that would not be acceptable for humans to eat. The companies not only use by-product in their food, but are legally allowed to mask how unhealthy it is by using healthy sounding names in the ingredients list.

You would think if you seen dried egg product listed as an ingredients in your dog food that that would be a healthy thing. I reality it can include undeveloped eggs, shells and other tissues deemed unfit for human use.

I found a list of 68 ingredients while doing research for the best dog food brands, that if any ore founf on your dog food label; stop feeding that brand to your dog. Nearly halve of these 68 ingredients are unhealthy and will leave to a shortening of your dogs life if consumed on a regular basis.

I have also seen a report done by an independent tester about the best dog food brands. I have been asked not to reprint or reproduce this writing as it is protected by copyright .

What I can tell you is after looking at every brand of dog food in North America they only found 9 that made the list of the best dog food brands, based on being healthy selections.

They also list 27 brands that they considered, but didn't make the grade, and there are some big names on this list. Names like Iams, Science Diet and Eukanuba didn't make the cut.

This is a 2nd addition report so there is also six brands that were cut from the list with the reason why listed. Matter of fact the report lists the reason why good or bad for every brand in the report.

After becoming outraged on the things I found out about what they put into dog food, I changed my two dogs to a homemade diet. I'll be the first to admit that at times it is just necessary to have a commercially made back-up. This is why it was so import to me to find the best dog food brands that would be healthy for my dogs. - 20511

Stop Your Dog Barking

It doesn't matter how big your dogs bark is or how old your dog is because no matter what you will see that you must get your dogs bark under control. It is an instinct for a dog to bark, but there are ways that you can get it under control and stop annoying bark behavior.

When you want to make sure that your dog stops barking, there are a number of different things that you should keep in mind. Remember, if one method doesn't work, there are going to be other things to try. Just be persistent!

First, make sure that you know why your dog is barking. Dogs never bark for no reason, though the reasons that they do bark might surprise you. First and perhaps most useful to owners is the alert bark, which tells you that they see something or someone strange or alarming.

Many dogs,but especially puppies, will bark for attention, while some dogs will also bark if they are startled. The kind of barking that many people deal with is bored or lonely barking, where your dog feels that he is alone and needs company. When a dog is bored, for example, he or she might bark because they need an outlet for their energy.

What kind of barker is your dog? Have they always barked? If you have recently adopted an older dog, this might be something that you need to think about. The old adage of not being able tot each an old dog new tricks is actually not true, but it does take some patience.

Many people first react by yelling at the dog, but this does not work. When you yell you could startle your dog or even frighten him. He could also think you are playing. Instead choose a word that you want to use as a command to use to stop barking. It should be something that everyone in the family uses. Something like enough or quiet can be a great choice. You can also use a spray bottle to spritz your dog. It can surprise the dog and make the problem work but in many cases it will help the dog associate barking with an unpleasant experience which can work.

Since loneliness and boredom are often cases of barking you should think about this. Do you spend enough time with your dog? When he barks go to him and see if that stops it. If your dog feels happy and secure then he will not be as likely to bark when he is alone. Just make sure there is regular interaction with the family and the dog. Help him be happy. Dogs are naturally inclined to be in groups because they are pack animals, so it feel unnatural for him to be alone.

Sometimes you may not be able to find the reason for your dogs barking. It can be helpful to consult with a veterinarian or animal specialist. They can help you to find underlying reasons that may not have been obvious. It is always possible to stop barking, so just be persistent. - 20511
