Keeping the attention of a dog while training is not always easy. Dogs can be easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well adjusted and well trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli during the day is a great way to keep the interest of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good ways to keep the dog's attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, in order to reward the dog for coming to you when you call him, ask the dog to come to you, without giving any clues about going for a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After your dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and start the reward. This can be either the before-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Giving some sort of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a good way to maintain your dog's motivation while you are dog training.

If your dog knows something good is going to occur every time he follows your command, he will be more motivated to please you every time.

Distraction training.

When training a dog, it is vital to not let distractions ruin the training. The dog must be trained to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and concentrate on what is being taught These types of distractions can even be used as rewards when training the dog to come when told.

For example, if your dog like playing with other dogs, whether in a local park or with the neighbour's dogs, let him play freely with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog.

When he comes to you, give him lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately let the dog to go back to playing with his friends. Repeat this several times and praise the dog each time he comes over to you.

The dog will quickly realize that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being removed from the park).

So-called distraction training is one of the hardest things to teach, because dogs are naturally social animals, and breaking away from the pack is one of the hardest things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably reluctant to leave their canine companions, but it is important to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you may require some creativity on your part at first. For instance, waving a favourite toy, or a lure, is a great way to get your dog's attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator too when you are training your dog.

Once your dog starts to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to obey your voice alone. It is vital that your dog responds to voice commands alone, since you will not always have a toy or other lure to hand. - 20511

Fleas and other parasites need always to be awarded the highest priority by dog owners. The very common occurrences of flea bite allergy in dogs causes worry to many dog owners every year, especially in the summer. This is because flea bites can cause allergic reactions in the area bitten by the fleas, which is often on the back above the tail. In these cases, the affected skin becomes hairless due to the dog scratching itself very vigorously.

Heavy flea infestations can cause severe dermatitis in dogs. If the flea bites produce an allergic reaction or even dermatitis in your dog, he/she really ought to be taken to the veterinary doctor, because mostly, the dog will be suffering severe discomfort by now.

The vet will provide a cream to ease the itching and powder or a spray to kill the fleas. Therefore, prevention is better and medicated collars are available to treat and prevent an infestation of external parasites like ticks and fleas.

Apart from fleas, other parasites like ticks and lice plus the internal parasites like hookworms, round worms, whip worms etc. can have an adverse effect on the the well-being of your dog. For instance, if hookworms have infected a dog, that dog will almost surely suffer from anaemia soon. The signs of anaemia become more obvious according to the advancement of the hookworm infection.

Hookworm larvae can pass directly through the skin and cause problems inside the affected dogs. Such dogs may show lesions due to dermatitis on the paws and on the skin. Frequently, skin rashes are the result in such cases and the affected animal passes loose stools, which are tinged red with blood.

Most dogs and all puppies get round worms, which is why dogs can sometimes be seen rubbing their bottoms along the floor. However, if round worms are present in very large numbers, affected puppies show a pot belly, which is easily noticeable by the dog's owners themselves. A dose of piperazine salts can be given orally for the treatment of this problem. However, broad-spectrum anthelmintics like pyrantel pamoate, fenbendazole etc. are also used to cure this very common condition.

Many drugs have arrived on the market to treat fleas and other parasites, although nowadays, the medical agent called ivermectin seems to be preferred by many dog owners to clear up fleas and other parasites in dogs. The minute you see the very active and hairy Cockapoo, you can't help but be mesmerized by it. Its hairy and flappy ears, and dense and shiny coat are just some of the few things you will like about it. Through the ever-adorable Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, the Cockapoo is of existence today.

The Cockapoo is a first degree hybrid, unlike presumptions of many that it is a purebred. First degree means that it is the direct result of cross breeding a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel. In Australia, they call this breed Spoodles and in Sweden, it is called Cockerpoo.

Unlike most new hybrids, the Cockapoo was actually first developed in the United Stated in 1950. After which, its popularity grew all throughout the country and other parts of the world. There are several existing clubs for this breed today and there are 3 active ones in the US.

This dog may come out by breeding a Poodle and Cocker Spaniel or by breeding a Cockapoo with another Cockapoo. The enthusiasts of this breed currently are trying to work out its standardization through continuous experimental breeding down to the next generations of Cockapoos. Cockapoo clubs have this mission and they advise breeders to list down all the details of their Cockapoo breeding in order to have solid and well-documented evidence that may be useful in creating the standard for this breed.

As an unstable breed, it is but natural for the Cockapoo to have varied appearance and temperament. Some Cockapoos may resemble a spaniel and some may resemble a Poodle. There is no standard height or weight for the Cockapoo since breeders may also use different types of Poodles such as Miniature Poodles or Toy Poodles.

The colors of this breed may come out in different shades of tan, beige, red or brown. Some may also appear in solid colors such as black, white, cream, silver or red. Most Cockapoos come out with a mixture of more than one color with complex markings of a different color on its body such as spots or patches on the muzzle, eyes and legs.

The appearance of this breed varies depending on which parent has influenced it the most genetically. Some may inherit the sleek hair of the spaniel and some may have the coarse curls of the Poodle. But it is the Poodle who is responsible for the Cockapoo's low shedding and less dander coat, making it a certified pet for the sensitive.

Aside from their cuddly appearance, the Cockapoos are also well-loved for their agility and liveliness. They may be little but they are intelligent, outgoing and loving, thanks to the genes of the Cocker Spaniel. You have more choices of different recipes to try on your dog when you prepare the food yourself. You can make special diets to your dog's taste.

Some things to keep in mind when making your dog food are avoid salt and to use lean cuts of meat. In order to make the food healthier, you want to mind the fat and sodium content, just as you would when cooking healthily for people. Avoiding salt is a good idea to keep the sodium down, but also because salt has a tendency to dehydrate. Increasing your dog's thirst is not the best idea!

Choose lean ground meat like ground turkey which is both a cheaper alternative with lower saturated fat compared to lean red meat.

Puppy mills have become a significant problem for both of those who love animals and for legitimate puppy breeders throughout the United States. Puppy mills are basically facilities that seek to be "puppy factories," where puppies are simply "cranked out" almost as if on an assembly line using just a few mothers and studs to produce many, many puppies. As you might imagine, this is no way to live. Dogs who are breeders in puppy mills often live deplorably, and the puppies themselves are often housed in overcrowded cages, with not enough water or food, and inadequate veterinary care and grooming.

Even worse, humans come in to little to no contact with these dogs, and many puppies die because of the conditions. And while it's true that if puppies do survive the puppy mill environment to be sold to a loving owner, their lives improve, dogs who are simply used as breeders are stuck in heinous conditions for the rest of their breeding lives, until they can breed no more. And it doesn't get better after that, usually; once their breeding days are over, these dogs are either killed or sold to other facilities where their lives are still as deplorable as ever. Therefore, when you buy from a puppy mill, you buy from a puppy factory where conditions are horrid and even abusive.

Any animal lover would think these conditions are horrible, of course, and most people buy puppies from puppy mills because they aren't aware of the horrid conditions therein. Nonetheless, it happens far more often than you might think, and prospective owners looking for a "good deal" may look the other way and purchase a puppy from a puppy mill, thus keeping these deplorable facilities in business. Literally hundreds of thousands of puppies are "manufactured" in this way, and sold at generally lower prices than legitimate breeders can charge (with their humane and therefore more expensive practices); this means that puppy mills are unfairly competitive with legitimate breeders simply based on price. Depending on where you purchase your dog, you may actually have a "puppy mill" puppy in your own house, too.

Puppy mill puppies unfortunately are sold to the public through a number of different avenues, so you may actually buy a puppy from a puppy mill without knowing it. Chances are, if you buy your dog from a pet store, you may be buying a puppy mill puppy, so avoid buying your dog from a pet store. Be careful, too, if you think about buying a dog via a classified ad on the Internet or through specialized breeder websites online unless it's been checked out and found to be credible. Many unscrupulous "puppy mill" breeders will sell their puppies this way, too.

Be careful, though, because a lot of times, these ads don't say that puppies are from puppy mills. Instead, they'll say that the dogs themselves were raised on farms or with a family. Oftentimes, you can't prove that a puppy has been raised from a puppy mill, and many of these ads do very well at fooling families who wish to do everything to avoid purchasing a puppy from a puppy mill.

If you want to stop puppy mills from doing their business, take heart; you certainly can do your part. Legislation is underway in many areas that would put a stop to puppy mills, but there's a fine and blurry line between legitimate breeding operations that have a lot of dogs and the actual definition of a puppy mill. In fact, many legitimate breeders who simply breed a lot of dogs are wrongly accused, and many puppy mills falsely identify themselves as legitimate breeders and are left to their own devices.

What can you do to stop puppy mills? There is legislation going around that is trying to put laws in place to end puppy mills, but it's unfortunate that there's a fine and blurred line between legitimate breeding operations that have a lot of dogs and something that could actually be called a puppy mill. What this means (unfortunately) is that legitimate breeders with a large number of dogs are often wrongly accused of being puppy mills, and puppy mills simply slip through the cracks by posing as legitimate breeders.

There are plenty of legitimate shelters and rescue agencies that have great pets for adoption, those that really need homes. There are even young dogs and puppies for those who want to bring a baby home. Also, don't buy dogs from newspaper ads or online, and advise your friends not to do so, as well.

Simply put, puppy mills are among the worst things an animal can experience. No loving creature deserves to live in these types of conditions, but they aren't going to go away unless profits from these cruel endeavors cease. - 20511

Dogs can be excellent companions and wonderful household pets. We have called them "man's best friend" forever because of that. But in order to be a decent doggy citizen and a trustworthy family pet you must train your dog well.

You should begin training your puppy for obedience as soon as he arrives at your dwelling. The training will be constant until he is about a year old and then while he may be considered "fully trained", you will still need to work with him to keep his skills razor-sharp for the remainder of his life. A well-trained dog is a delight to own and a joy to be around.

The number one tenet of dog training is that you must be the "alpha dog". Some people may not like that word but the reality is that dogs are pack animals and they expect to have a leader. You must be the leader and all of the human members of your family must outrank your dog in the pack order. Dogs will do anything for the leader of the pack so that must be you.

Your dog must never be permitted to show domination. He needs to wait to eat until after you have finished eating. This is a understated but very crucial thing when it comes to establishing dominance. He must never be permitted to jump on you or other people either.

Do not ever permit your puppy to do things that you will not let him to do as an mature dog. This includes jumping and nipping at you. One of the most imperative things in training a dog is consistency. A dog cannot think logically like a human and he will not appreciate that it is acceptable to jump on you in your play clothes but not in your business suit. He also won't appreciate why he could do something as a puppy but he can't go on to do it as an adult dog. Be consistent.

If you get a crate all of your teaching will be easier. Dogs essentially feel safe and secure in a comfy and warm place that they feel is their own. Your puppy may whine when he goes into the crate at the start but you need to just leave him there. He will adjust and he will in reality grow to like it very soon. A crate will make housetraining and obedience training easier.

It is vital for your dog's own wellbeing to sit and stay. You must be able to get your dog to stop and stay if essential. It is essential to be able to control your dog at times and you will need to make sure that he is obedient with your orders in order to avoid troubles like running off or jumping all over the guests to your home.
