Secrets to Stop a Dog From Barking

Secrets to Stop a Dog From Barking

by Craig Clemins

In many cases, dogs will bark when they have absolutely nothing else to do. When dogs feel a lack of attention, they may act out and misbehave. Many times we want them to behave, so instead of being firm with them, we tend to give in and give them what they want. This teaches them that this behavior will get them the attention that they want. It is important for us to learn the proper way to deal with these behaviors and the proper way to teach our dog that this is unacceptable.

One of the first things that your dog needs to learn is that barking in order to attract attention will not be tolerated. Some dogs lack so much attention that they start to anger their owners as a way to get attention - its not positive attention but its better than nothing. This belief needs to be changed and you'll need to train your dog that this is not what you want. To do this most effectively you'll need to practice reinforcing your commands with an action.

Next time you tell your dog to be "Quiet", after saying "Quiet" reinforce the command by spraying water at your dog. This is known as negative reinforcement and is a great way of teaching your dog to associate words with action. Repeating this sequence a few times will teach your dog that the "Quiet" command is followed by the water being sprayed - something he doesn't like. Through a little practice your dog will soon learn to keep quiet without needing to spray water.

If the barking comes with a lot of growling and aggression, its not advised to use the negative reinforcement approach. Instead get your dog to his vet as soon as possible as their may be a medical problem that needs to be attended.

If your dog barks when you leave the house, make sure you do everything you can to minimize the barking. Ensure your dog has a comfortable place to rest and plenty of food and water. Make sure your dog doesn't see other people as this may only excite him and cause more barking.

Another way to stop your dog barking is to stop praising him unnecessarily. Excessive praising is counterproductive because it teaches your dog that regardless of what he does, he will be praised. When he does what you've requested, don't get carried away, just give him a quick pat and leave it at that. This will teach your dog that if he wants more praise, he'll have to work for it and do more of what you're asking for.

Also you will want to give him something fun to do when you leave, give some food, some chew toys and make sure he can't see others while you are away. Use negative and positive reinforcement with you dog, starting with the negative. Then when he has learned the activity and does it, then you can calmly praise the action. - 20511

Your Cat At The Groomer

Your Cat At The Groomer

by Virginia Sutherland

Cats have an amazing and specially designed tongue that they use to keep their fur looking their best, along with removing, and digesting lose hair. Sometimes the cats own effort isn't quite enough to keep tangles and mats at bay. This is especially true in the spring when cats tend to shed quite a bit, and if the cat is long haired. Sending your cat to a groomer can help to untangle mats, remove large quantities of lose hair while shampooing the cat to make her look and feel her best.

You're going to pay a good amount of money in order to send your cat to the groomers, and your cat will probably not be very pleased about the whole process. There is a variety of services a groomer can do for your cat. Some groomers offer fur trims while other will shave the cats completely with the exception of the head and tail. Most groomers will give cats baths and condition their fur.

Getting the claws trimmed its a great idea, especially if you do not trim the claws on your own. You may even opt for some nail polish on those talons...

As you can imagine, your cat may not be very cooperative during this process. Some cats will react with fear, others with aggression, while some will even like the feeling of the warm water.

While this could spell disaster if you tried it at home, professional groomers know what to do to make it easy in kitty, and how to restrain your cat gently in order to get the job done. Grooming, and especially dealing with, a cat is totally different than grooming a dog. A groomer experienced with cats is a must.

When your cat comes home from the groomers - especially if this was its first experience with a groomer - it may hide out for a while. You might be disappointed because perhaps you want to show off your shiny, groomed cat, but you need to be patient with your cat because going to the groomers can be a traumatic experience for a cat.

Do all cats need to go to a professional groomer? No, not at all. Most cats are quite self sufficient in the art of keeping themselves clean and beautiful. If you do decide to take your cat to be groomed, be prepared that it may cost a bit and have some extra delicious treats for her in order to get back in her good favor again. - 20511

Crate Training Your Puppy

Crate Training Your Puppy

by john rolly

A lot of individuals normally have the wrong perception when it comes to crate training. This conception leads people to believe that crates are a punishment for dogs, and therefore they wont use them. Much to the contrary, crates are actually one of the safest places you can put your puppy, which also gratifies his natural instincts to situate himself within a den.

Most puppies love to spend time in crates, but you should not let the puppy spend countless hours in the crate as he will also need to get out around the house to play and go outside to potty. The crate is the place for the puppy when he is confused or scared.

As you are teaching your puppy to get used to his crate, you have to make sure that you do not let him out if he is barking or going crazy. Wait until the puppy calms down before you let him out. Before you know it your puppy will greatly appreciate the crate.

As soon as you get your puppy and bring him home for the first time, you should already have your crate there and situated where you want it to be. You should set the crate up in a central area, but never in areas that have a lot of traffic. Most people who use crates tend to leave them in the kitchen near a door, so the puppy can go outside whenever he needs to relieve himself.

When the puppy arrives at your home for the first time, leave the door to the crate open and let him discover it himself. You could also put blankets and puppy toys in there to give him an idea to enter, when the puppy enters the crate for the first time you should reward him.

Before you know it your puppy will start to go into the crate on their own, this is a sign that they have a great amount of trust for the crate. When this happens you should praise the puppy and reward it as it is almost completely crate trained.

Now that the puppy is getting used to the crate, you can shut the door and monitor the puppies reaction. Some puppies may start to whine when the door to the crate is closed, this is normal you just have to make sure that you do not let the puppy out just because it is whining, wait until the puppy is calm.

Even though it may take some time, crate training is great for your puppy. You can use the crate when you need to leave, when you have family over, or for when your puppy has a medical condition such as diarrhea. If you use a bit of patience and never use the crate for punishment, your puppy should catch on to the crate pretty quick. - 20511

Do Bark Control Collars Really Work?

Do Bark Control Collars Really Work?

by Minnie Jackson

It is a natural behavior for dogs to bark to allow them to communicate with other dogs and their owners. Dogs are very protective of their owners and will bark to alert their owner when a stranger comes to the door. Their barking becomes annoying and disturbing when it is at an unusual noise they may hear outside.

At this point, owners are not happy with their pets, and neither are their neighbors. Many a dispute has arisen because of a dog that is barking when it shouldnt be, and before animal control is notified, some type of anti-barking device needs to be considered, like a bark control collar.

These devices are very effective in reducing dog barking, and come in a variety of different styles that work in different ways. Some use static correction, some use citronella, and some emit a high pitched ultrasonic tone that only dogs can hear.

If your dog is constantly barking for unknown reasons, you should consider purchasing a bark control collar or anti- barking device so you can enjoy your pet. The ultrasonic bark control system is a great way to train your dog if you are uneasy using a bark control collar.

An ultrasonic bark control system is activated by a dogs' bark or by the owner and these emit a high pitched ultrasonic noise that only a dog can hear. Advantages of a unit like this is that they can be used for more than one dog in a home since it is not worn as well as most units being fairly inexpensive.

Traditional bark control collars emit a warning beep and a gentle correction at first, which increases in intensity with each successive bark until it reaches a level sufficient to discourage the dog from barking.

You will want to purchase a quality bark control collar at your local pet store or favorite online pet supply store try to avoid cheap models as they will not be as effective and may cause false signals and cause the bark control collar to start by other noises or another barking dog nearby.

Bark control collars are a safe and inexpensive solution and will save relationships in the end. Ultimately the bark stops here, even if it is your neighbors dog! - 20511

Good Dog Grooming Helps Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy

Good Dog Grooming Helps Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy

by Michael Frederick

Do you have a dog that you love? Do you lack the time or inclination to keep your pup well groomed? Possibly you should consider a pet grooming service. A professional pet groomer can make your dog feel great, smell good, and look fabulous. A pet groomer will provide more than just a good wash. You can get your dog massaged, their ears checked and cleaned, nails trimmed, teeth brushed, and so much more.

Dogs in particular need to be cleaned and taken care of properly. Grooming is especially important in the hot summer months to help keep them cool. A regular, refreshing bath is one of the dog grooming basics. This task may require more than spraying water on your pet, rubbing shampoo and rinsing it off. A professional groomer will use proper supplies, such as shampoos and special dog brushes, to properly clean and groom the dog.

One aspect of dog grooming involves giving the dog a haircut. Granted, not all dogs need this attention, but for those who do, it's imperative to find someone who has the proper tools, and can do a decent job. You can almost always tell if a dog has had a "homemade" haircut. Usually it looks choppy, uneven, and just plain unsightly. Poor pooch! I recommend a professional groomer for this task.

Grooming of your dog should also include proper dental care. You dog needs to have his teeth brushed the same as humans do. It is important that you have this done by someone who can do a good job. If you're not qualified to handle this task, take your pooch to a professional dog groomer. There your pup will receive a good thorough teeth brushing, and the results will be healthier teeth and better smelling breath.

Have you ever trimmed a dog's toenails? If so, you understand how scary, unpleasant, and sometimes painful it can be for your pup if you cut into the quick of the nail. And other than to yelp in pain or run under the bed, your dog can't give you very good feedback on how you're doing as the work is in progress. This is one aspect of dog grooming that is best left to the professional. The pro has the proper tools, and can handle the job with ease. With the job done well, your pooch will not be able to scratch up your furniture, upholstery, floors, and clothing. Nail care is absolutely essential for the comfort and health of your pet!

While your pup is at the groomer's, make sure he gets his ears checked and cleaned. Proper cleaning of your dog's ears is important for good grooming and overall health, since hearing is one of the most important of their senses. As part of a preventative ear care program, and to minimize the chance of an ear infection occurring, have your dog's ears tended to once a month, if possible.

As pet owners, we are all responsible for keeping our dogs in the best, healthiest condition possible. That includes proper grooming. Since a dog has limited ability to clean its coat, teeth, and ears, it's our duty to make sure these tasks are done correctly. A dog grooming service will come in handy for this. Give your pooch the loving care he deserves! - 20511

Exposed: How to Stop a Dog Barking

Exposed: How to Stop a Dog Barking

by Craig Clemins

Why do some dogs bark so much and how to stop a dog barking, the solutions to both these questions are described in detail in this article. If your dog barks more than you would like, you are not alone. Dog owners report that this is one of the annoying behaviors they encounter, hence knowing how to stop a dog barking is a sought after skill. The first step in stopping a dog barking is to first identify the underlying cause of the barking.

How to Stop a Dog Barking

Soon I will explain how to stop a dog barking, first however it's important to understand why dogs bark As soon as puppies can bark they start to realize that it's a great way to get attention. Old dogs still know that barking gets attention and they sometimes bark if they are bored or need exercise. They also bark due to a lack of mental stimulation or because they have been at home alone for too long.

If this is the reason your dog's barking, start to take action to remedy the problem today. Try to take your dog for a walk once a day where possible. Obedience train your dog a few times each week and play fun interesting games with him. Give him a few new toys so that he can entertain himself when he's alone. Give your dog some 1 on 1 time every day for at least 5 minutes.

Your dog may also be barking because he's afraid of something. Loud noises such as those caused during thunder storms often cause dogs to bark. If this is happening to your dog, take him to a safe place like his crate and turn a radio on to provide some cover for the noise outside.

The final common cause of barking is separation anxiety. Dogs sometimes suffer separation anxiety is they are attached to you or if they have recently lost someone they love (such as someone leaving home - through divorce or death etc). If your dog suffers from anxiety separation you will need to train your dog that it's ok to be at home alone. You can do this by leaving the house for a short period of time (a minute or two) and then returning, slowly build up the time. When you return to your dog give him a treat (if he hasn't barked).

Another method that can be used to help address the problem of barking dogs is to use a barking collar. These collars spray a small amount of citronella (it's totally harmless) in the dogs face each time he barks. Not everyone agrees with these collars but they have been proven to work. - 20511

One Guaranteed Way to Train Your Pet!

One Guaranteed Way to Train Your Pet!

by T. Clark

Your pet is wonderful in so many ways. I feel like anyone who has a pet probably has some sort of special feeling for it. I want to tell you how you can effectively train your pet without bringing a wedge in the relationship. Your pet is the most loyal living being that you will probably ever encounter.

The number one rule you must know as an owner is, the rules and commands have to be consistent. Most pet owners don't understand why their pets start off obedient and soon after become non responsive.

Whatever route you decide to take in training your pet, do it yourself or hire a trainer, you must be consistent. Once the pet has a clear understanding of what the rules are they will happily follow them.

The truth is when you train your dog, you must first train yourself. Every command you give your pet has to have a constant tone. Do not change the commands according to your moods. It is not beneficial to one minute say "lay down boy" and the next minute "LAY DOWN YOU STUPID MUTT!!!".

Your dog is clueless to why you are yelling at them in this situation. Although they carry this great love and respect for you, they are now becoming frustrated and uneasy.

Even with the many many conversations we have with our pets, they really don't know what we are talking about. They only know tones and sounds, which is why our commands have to be consistent. Please do not stop talking your pet though. The animal always knows when we are being loving and compassionate to them by the sound of our voice.

When you are ready to have a well trained dog examine yourself first. Do not get into the habit of repeating commands to your pet, or they will never take you seriously.

Be sure to understand that you must train yourself to be consistent! No matter what route you want to take in training your dog if you stay consistent they will continue to be that great extended part of your family! - 20511

Crate Training Dogs

Crate Training Dogs

by Craig Clemins

If you are thinking about training your dog or puppy, you may want to consider the crate training approach. It is one of the most popular methods used these days for training dogs. A Crate (cage) is usually made from plastic of wire and comes in a variety of sizes and shapes. Crate training has be proven to be beneficial for both the trainer and the dog.

The reason crate training works so well is that most dogs dont use their sleeping area as a toilet. Given that in most cases the crate will serve as a sleeping area for your dog, the dog learns how to resist going to the toilet until they are out of the crate.

The crate will serve as your puppies den during crate training. Your puppy/dog will be required to be inside the crate at all times during the training period except when it is let out to play, feed, or go to the toilet. Upon letting your dog out of its crate you should immediately take it outside so it can go to the toilet.

The crate should be big enough for your dog to move around in but not so big that there is excess space (the puppy may use the excess space to pee). A good crate size is about 1.5 times the length of your dog and about 6-7 inches taller than your dog. If your crate is too long for your particular dog you can modify it by simply blocking of one end of the crate. Plastic crates are the easiest to clean and also the lightest so we recommend these over other construction methods.

During crate training, the puppies toilet breaks must be at regular times throughout the day so that accidental urination and defecation is avoided. As puppies get older they naturally become better at holding there urges to go to the toilet.

You should try to make the crate a relaxing place for your puppy to be. Putting toys inside the crate and lining it with paper or a blanket will help with this. A good tip is to feed the dog nearby the crate, progressively moving the food closer to the crate until the dog is eating inside the crate. To help build a positive image of the crate you can give the dog rewards for good behaviour inside the crate.

Crates should never be used to enforce punishment and you should avoid locking your dog in the crate when you are not in the house. Dogs should not be left in the crate for too long as they may begin to fear the crate and get anxious.

Crates are useful tools for transporting your dog or puppy be it in the car or in airplane. All airlines now require dogs travel in quality dog crates.

Not everyone is a fan of crate training. Some professional trainers look down on the method sighting that dogs can become too emotionally attached to their crates after being locked inside them for long periods of time.

A Look into Dog Insurance

A Look into Dog Insurance

by Lucille Green

Many individuals could not contemplate a life without their dog as they see them as more than a immediate family member but as a regular companion that they may not have ever experienced in another human being. A dog will get just as much enjoyment from lying on the floor near you if you haven't the energy for a walk, never protestant. Whatever the weather, your dog would follow you without even a whine but never as for anything other than you love in return.

Considering all these facets of a pet it is our duty to guarantee that we try and show our pet some of the care and concern that they feel for us and dog insurance can be one of the best ways to show that we care. These policies provided by various pet insurance underwriters cover a wide range of services starting from accidents, serious illnesses and even routine health care for the pets. These dog insurance policies make it simple for the owner to look after their pet without any financial concerns bothering them.

Technology can be it's own downfall from time to time and as medical treatment for pets improves, thus does the cost and many treatments that are available now, which weren't a few years ago, are very costly. It is even now possible for certain pets to have transplants and even the likes of hip replacements which not so long ago were not even thought about. Once dogs reach a certain age, then there are genetic diseases which can affect them.

The unfortunate fact is that many conditions that dogs are prone to suffer from are only visible when the dog reaches a certain point in their life by which time they are a valued immediate family member. So by providing a extensive dog insurance policy for your dog you can offset any fiscal worries that medical treatment may cause and still give your pet the best health care. Keeping a dog healthy requires a bit more than just good food and a bath because regular checks by the veterinary can help remove unwanted and unhealthy parasites that all dogs carry as well as looking after their hearing and teeth.

All these processes form an integral part of the dog's regular check up by the veterinary therefore dog health insurance often covers the necessary processes thereby enabling the owner to provide the best care for his beloved pet. If you love your dog and want them around for as long as possible, this is the way to ensure it will happen.

If you are not sure where to start in your search for a good plan then ask some of your neighbors who have dogs and see if they can advise you on a dog insurance plan that will cover everything discussed here. - 20511

Treating Dog With Recurring UTI

Treating Dog With Recurring UTI

by Geraldine Dimarco

Canine urinary tract infection or canine UTI affects approximately 14% of the entire dog population in the world. This condition happens in dogs when bacteria such as E. coli, klebsiella, coagulase positive straphylococcus, pseudomonas, esterococcus, or proteus mirabilis gain access to the dog?s bladder, urethra, and the kidneys and cause infection. Dog UTI is a serious health problem in dogs. If not treated immediately, it could spread to other areas of the dog?s internal system such as the heart and cause further harm and even death. Therefore, it is imperative that you bring your dog to the veterinarian immediately when you see any of the signs of canine UTI.

Early detection of canine UTI is possible. All you need to do is observe the dog?s behavior and urinating habits. An irregularity of his behavior and urinating habits could be a sign of dog UTI. Other initial symptoms of canine UTI include the following: ? Bloody urine ? Pus in the urine ? A foul smell in the urine ? Cloudy urine ? Crystals or stones in the urine ? Fever ? Listlessness and lethargy ? Frequent licking of the genital area. This act could signal pain in the dog?s genital area. ? Incontinence or the inability to control urine ? Frequent and excessive urination ? Straining and yelping in pain while urinating ? Making an effort to urinate but producing none or little urine ? Urinating in inappropriate areas ? Tenderness of the lower area of the stomach

The following are signs of female puppy UTI: 1. Frequent urination. A female puppy suffering from UTI may tend to urinate more often. This constant urination may be caused by an inflammation in its bladder. If inflammation has worsened, this frequent urination may lead to incontinence or the inability for the puppy to control the flow of its urine. 2. In contrast to frequent urination, a puppy with UTI may urinate less than usual. This condition could be caused by a blockage in the female puppy?s urethra or bladder. The blockage may be caused by the formation of stones or plugs. Although blockage is most common in male puppies, it could also happen in females. If left untreated, a complete blockage may occur and put the puppy?s life in extreme danger. 3. Excessive thirst. Female puppies with UTI may also tend to drink more water. This increase in thirst may be a sign of dehydration which may be caused by constant urination or excessive excretion of liquid from its body. 4. Bloody urine. In its advanced stage, UTI in a female puppy may result to bloody urine. This can be extremely painful to the puppy. 5. Straining to urinate. The puppy may strain to urinate but produce only trickles of urine. The puppy may also whimper when trying to urinate because of the pain that goes along with the process. 6. Lethargy. If you notice that your puppy is getting lethargic more often, or is feverish, chances are it may be suffering from female puppy UTI in its advanced stage. Treatment is a must in this condition.

There are natural ways to cure or prevent canine UTI from recurring. Homeopathic remedies are as effective as the best antibiotics and could help suppress the recurrence of the disease. The following are natural remedies you could try for your pet: ? Uva ursi ? Cantharis ? Vitamin C and citrus juices ? Beberis vulgaris ? Staphysagris ? Juniper berry ? Goldenrod

Before giving your dog these ingredients, though, be sure to have it brought to the vet for examination first, especially when you notice signs of symptoms of canine UTI in your pet. Canine UTI is a serious health problem in dogs and must not be ignored. Seek the help of a veterinarian as soon as possible when your dog shows signs of dog UTI. This way, you can save your pet from further health problem. - 20511

Dog Training Tips - What Is There To Learn

Dog Training Tips - What Is There To Learn

by Craig Vic

Most dog owners know that not every pet conforms to our standards and sometimes we feel like we are on the leash or they have us under their paw.

If you are frustrated by your dogs habitual disobedience, it is time to reclaim your dominant position within the household. By following the following training regimen, your dog will become a pet again, instead of a furry tyrant.

Some dogs are harder to teach than other dogs and the reason for this is because of the breed they are. Some dogs were not intended to live in a home as pets, specifically the type of dogs that were hunters and killers for many years. Despite what breed they are, it is possible to train your dog and make him submit to each command, if you know how to accomplish this. This might seem like it is hard to accept, but a dog won't obey you because he knows that he can get away with this.

If a dog demands control by the way he is acting or he is in charge of a specific area of the home and being dominant, the truth is that we have allowed the dog to be this way. Something that dogs notice immediately, since they are pack animals is their place in their surroundings. Within a pack, someone has to be the boss or "alpha dog".

If you don't take this "alpha" position, then your dog will take over this position. Even when you make an attempt to teach your dog it is necessary that you show confidence and body language that definitely lets your dog know that you are the boss, or your dog won't think of you this way.

Remember, even when you become impatient that firm isn't aggressive and angry. All you need is some simple yet consistent dog training tips to make the bond between your dog and yourself much more enjoyable for not only you but the dog too. Even though some of the tips might not be in your nature you have to let the dog know that you are his boss. The first thing is too control your tone of voice when giving a command.

As pack leader, your voice should be firm, non-emotional, and authoritatively. This conveys to your dog that you are in charge and serious and your pet will have more focus on his training tasks. Use a more affectionate and soft tone when playing, so your dog learns the difference between play and training time. Secondly, in order to establish yourself as the dominant, you must perform every action before your dog is allowed to do so.

Coming in the house, going out of the house, or strolling in the middle of two parked cars should always be done by you first and your dog has to walk in back of you all the time. Mealtime should be an activity that you can use to show you are in charge - you are the first one to eat, and after this you dog eats. You should begin playing with your dog first as well as do anything else first. This won't be easy in the beginning but it will assist you to have a more enjoyable time with your dog in the future. - 20511

Can You Trust the Banfield Pet Insurance?

Can You Trust the Banfield Pet Insurance?

by Howardz Swang

In the world today, Banfield is the largest of the veterinary clinics. Throughout the countries of Mexico, United Kingdom, and the USA they own in excess of seven hundred hospitals. These hospitals have somewhere around two thousand highly capable veterinarians, who care deeply about the fact that pets merit the same quality care medically, that people, expect to get. This leads to Banfield having their hospitals giving the latest in medical services with things like longer opening hours, plans for preventative type care, and they have a very in depth program for quality assurance.

In October, 1955 the first Banfield Pet Hospital was opened by veterinarian Warren J. Wegert. This number grew and by 2001 the number of hospitals we over 300. Then in 2004 Banfield had managed to sign up over a million pets into their Optimal Wellness Plan. By their fiftieth anniversary celebration in the year 2005, Banfield had expanded to having over five hundred high quality hospitals opened.

After five decades in practice, Banfield has gained a wealth of experience and this has enabled them to design and pet healthcare plan. It is intended to cover all routine care that is necessary to the health and well-being of your cat or dog.

A Banfield Wellness Plan winds up being a comprehensive healthcare plan for pets, which can prolong an animal's life by about 25 percent. It gives the pet owner the right to use at whichever of the over 700 hospitals they are near without trouble, this is great when you move or travel. This plan also offers comprehensive type care at very reasonable prices. You can get services for about half of the standard care cost, because with this plan you get your office visits free for the life of your pets, on top of various discounts on several of their services. This wellness plan gives you a warranty on vaccinations covering up to $1000.

Similar to people the pets can come down with various issues concerning their health over their lifetime. The Banfield Optimum Wellness Plan provides all services your pets require to stay healthy, and stop problems for occurring.

The Banfield Wellness plans currently cover puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats. It is a highly cost effective way to provide your pet with the quality care it deserves, such as and including vaccinations, physical exams, and free, unlimited office calls.

With Banfield providing such great service for pets and their owners alike it is no wonder why they have been able to expand so much. Our pets should get the same kind of care that we would provide ourselves so that they can live a good, long, healthy life. Banfield agrees with this belief and provides just that quality of care.

And now just like humans do our pets also can reap benefits by having a healthcare plan and with the one that Banfield offers they can have continuous care and good health. This is how it should be because our pets are the same as our family members, which means they should have all they need in care medically, so they can stay with out family for a nice long time. - 20511

Effective Puppy House Training

Effective Puppy House Training

by Shelly Ballard

If you want to keep your house clean after deciding to adopt a new puppy, you need to insist on puppy house training rules. Each new puppy and its owner needs to work through house training. All puppies are different, some pick up things rather fast and some don't. It can take a while to see a difference once you start your puppy house training, so don't get frustrated. Keep being consistent, loving, and patient and your puppy will learn what you want.

In the Puppy's Mind

Understanding how your puppy thinks can make puppy house training much easier. The word clean holds a different meaning for your puppy than it holds for you. In your opinion, your puppy should go to the yard if he needs to go to the bathroom, however, your puppy is only worried about going to the bathroom when nature calls, wherever that may be. Using the bathroom away from their food and bed, the basic health and safety rule of nature, is your puppy's only concern. From their perspective, anywhere away from their food and bed is the perfect place. You must teach your dog that places that may be acceptable to him are not necessarily acceptable to you, you must lead him to the spot that you have chosen for him.

Anticipating the Signs

During the first couple of weeks of a puppy, the early warning signals aren't always easy to read, so you need to find a way to understand this as soon as possible. Choose a location soon that is close to the puppy's food, bed, or play area. It is very rewarding to be able to anticipate when your puppy needs to go outside. In general, puppies have to "go" after waking up, eating, drinking, getting excited, or playing as well as every hour in between!

As you get to know your puppy, you will get to learn the various signs that he needs to go out to the bathroom. Common signals that your puppy needs to go are circling a single spot, smelling the ground persistently and holding their tail up high. All you should do if this happens is get your dog and go to the area that you have designated as their toilet area. Taking these steps will ensure that puppy house training is successful.

Even the best trained dogs will occasionally have small accidents when they are very excited or when greeting friends and family members. This type of response is natural and is called submissive urination. You shouldn't treat this differently from regular house training. You should never go as far as punishing you dog, even if other accidents occur. Punishing a house training pup will only lead to confusion and more make the puppy feel the need to hide when it relieves itself.

Do not shout at your dog when he has an accident due to excitement, instead take a patient approach and work things out with him until the habit is broken. It is best to try to greet new people while you are both still outside and the setting is low key. Greet your dog gently and build up his or her confidence. If your puppy has an accident, it's best to just clean it up without making a big deal of it.Your dog will soon stop having accidents, and you can congratulate yourself on successfully concluding another round of puppy house training. - 20511

Training Your Springer Spaniel Using a Dog Crate

Training Your Springer Spaniel Using a Dog Crate

by Michael Saunders

A lot of people have the wrong conception when it comes to crates crate training. This conception leads people to believe that crates are a punishment for dogs, and therefore they wont use them or they are cruel. Much to the contrary, crates are actually one of the safest places you can put your Springer Spaniel, which also gratifies his natural instincts to situate himself within a den.

If you have a crate and leave it open, your Spaniel will start to go to it when he gets sleepy or when he gets confused. Although Spaniels tend to like crates, you shouldnt overuse one by allowing him to spend hours at a time inside of one. While you should be training him to get used to the crate, you should never allow him out if he is barking. Once your Spaniel starts to appreciate the crate, you can leave him in it for a few hours here and there - such as when you are away from home.

When you get your puppy and bring him home for the first time, you should have your crate ready and situated where you want it to be. You should set the crate up in a central area where your puppy can be part of the family, but never in areas that have a lot of traffic. Most people who use crates tend to leave them in the kitchen near a door, so the Spaniel can go outside whenever he needs to relieve himself.

After bringing the puppy home, put her inside the house and allow her to begin searching for the crate. Leave the crate door open and your Spaniel puppy will begin wandering in and out of the crate. You may consider placing a dog treat or toy inside the crate as an extra incentive for your puppy to enter. Once she goes inside offer her praise, while letting her know that she is doing the right thing.

Offer her praise when your Springer Spaniel stays in her crate on her own. After your Spaniel puppy begins, a habit of going into the crate on her own, you will place a new treat or toy inside for her to enjoy. After some time, close the door and observe how she reacts. If she begins to whine, simply talk to her and put your fingers through the holes in the door. However, do not immediately take her out rather you should wait for her to settle down.

Even though it may take some time, crate training is great for your Spaniel. You can use the crate when you need to leave, when you have family over, or for when your Spaniel has a medical condition such as diarrhea. If you use a bit of patience and never use the crate for punishment - your Springer Spaniel puppy should catch on to the crate pretty quickly. - 20511

Pet Care Insurance Helps Keep Your Pet Healthy

Pet Care Insurance Helps Keep Your Pet Healthy

by Dr. Robert Sleeter

Pets are one of the most rewarding and best decisions a person can make. Pets, however, can also be very expensive companions if they get an illness or accident that impairs them. Pet owners need worry no longer about what ifs and hypotheticals. Just like the health insurance you purchase for the rest of your family, you can find (http://www.petinsurancereporter.com/veterinary-pet-insurance/veterinary-pet-insurance/) horse pet insurance for the animals in your home. You will need to determine which policy gives you and your animal the best protection for your animal's breed and age.

Protection For Your Pet

Unless your animal gets an illness or accident, it might seem useless to have (http://www.petinsurancereporter.com/veterinary-pet-insurance/online-veterinary-pet-insurance/) insurance for pets. When the animal becomes sick or injured, however, the veterinary pet insurance will be a big benefit, protecting your animal and saving you from paying exobitant vet bills. You should do your research and consider some factors before investing in pet insurance. Choosing a policy can be made more difficult by not knowing what coverage your pet actually needs.

Some veterinary pet insurance will not cover your pet if the problem is breed-specific. There are some things like hip problems that will not be covered for large dogs by the aspca pet health insurance. This lack of coverage here, however, shouldn't prevent you from protecting your pet in other areas.

There are a number of other situations that will still be covered by the veterinary pet insurance, like the x-rays and treatments needed after a broken bone. When your insurance covers a particular thing, it can save you so much money that it will be well worth getting the insurance policy.

Health problems are scary for anyone, but think about how scary they can be for your pets, who can't understand the problems afflicting them. They are entirely in your care, so you need to do everything in your power to take care of them. Veterinary pet insurance can cover all health problems ranging from allergies to ulcers, and these policies help you provide the highest level of care for your pets instead of choosing cheaper care because you lack the necessary funds. As members of your family, your pets deserve the very best veterinary care that is available to them, and you can help provide that care with veterinary pet insurance. - 20511

Aggressive Dogs - Stopping Their Destructive Behavior

Aggressive Dogs - Stopping Their Destructive Behavior

by Jeff Fletcher

No one would ever believe that the little innocent puppy that they brought home could turn into a dog that is one bad mistake away from being sent away. Aggressive dogs do not just happen over night. Dogs are not born to automatically be mean or a threat to people. Often times, aggressive dogs are the result of some form of abuse or lack of proper training. If you received your dog as an adult from another household you will want to be specifically cautious to make sure that you are putting your pet through dog obedience training.

Making sure your dog knows who is the leader and who is the pet is critical in making housebreaking an easy job for you both. Training your dog properly is imperative for much more than making sure that your dog no longer acts out. You must ensure that you do not let your dog turn into one of the multitude of aggressive dogs loose in the world. Dog growling and dog biting can lead to very bad situations. These situations can arise without proper dog training.

The Awful Consequences of Aggressive Dogs

* Physical injuries to family, friends, or neighbors

* Emotional injuries to young children

* Damaged personal property

* Any of the above situations that create lawsuits

* Being one of the many aggressive dogs that are put to sleep each year

Any pet lover can see you need to do all that is possible to prevent your pet from becoming one of those aggressive dogs. You should seek outside help from a professional if you feel that you are unable to fix and control the problem on your own. With aggressive dogs, it can be wise to find a professional dog trainer who is specially trained in this area.

The best thing to do is read up on all of the training information you can find out there on aggressive dogs. Learn the correct ways to punish a dog besides striking it. Violence will only breed violence so make sure that you are not taking part in the making of aggressive dogs. You may have luck with the books and videos out there but you will have a much better chance at solving the problem, or preventing one from ever happening, by bringing an expert into your home.

Getting More Help

Whether you are training your dog yourself or with a professional trainer, nothing is more critical than taking the utmost responsibility for your pet. The people who own aggressive dogs are the ones who are responsible, so ensure that you won't have to deal with these legal or moral situations.

If you have a dog that has not yet experienced signs of becoming one of the many aggressive dogs out there then you have a little time. But if your dog has shown any signs of rough play or destructive behavior then you have no time to waste. - 20511

Caring for your Small Dog

Caring for your Small Dog

by Calvin Wapasa

Owning a small dog really isn't that much different to owning a large one. However, owners need to make a few adjustments to best meet their small dog's needs. Illustrated below are some points you will need to consider for the daily requirements for a tiny breed of dog.

Feeding the dog:

You must consider the size of the food you buy them from the grocery store as they won't be able to eat the normal type of food ordinarily purchased for a regular size pooch. Buying a kibble for example must take into consideration the size of their jaw so a smaller one will be required which you may not find in just any store. It is also recommended to offer the Lilliputian canines some canned soft foods.

Methods of containing them:

It is easy for them to run around and go to the toilet outside providing the area is secure isn't it? Smaller dogs are much more nimble that larger dogs and what might be a secure environment for one is not necessarily for the other. It may seem bizarre but it has been know for very large birds to actually take tiny dogs from their gardens. An answer to this might be to have a fully enclosed run or area for them to run around in.

Getting your pet to obey your commands:

Though teaching larger dogs is as easy or as hard as their tinier counterparts, according to pet experts, it is common to find the diminutive canines are thoroughly smothered to be taught any discipline. Small dogs don't think any differently to their larger cousins and believe they are part of the pack where you are their leader but if you show signs of weakness they will start ruling you. Getting them house trained is just as important too even though their mess might not be as great, this is still an important issue that must be dealt with. According to dog experts, let the dog work for you so that he understands and identifies your demands and rules. If you can train your dog to perform small tricks and other normal things like fetching a stick for example you can then provide them with a small treat afterwards.

His appearance:

Small dog care includes some special grooming needs you'll need to keep in mind. One such specific need for a minuscule pet is that he needs more frequent nail trimming than his larger counterpart since he hardly walks or runs on uneven surfaces which would have naturally shaped up his nails. As they are eating more canned food, their teeth will need to be brushed more regularly (at least twice per week) to eliminate unwanted and harmful deposits. As is evident from the above, caring for a small dog is very much the same for any dog of any size. While each requirement may seem small and insignificant, but when you do it with earnestness, it can make a huge difference in the way you keep a dog. - 20511

Learn How to Buy a Dog

Learn How to Buy a Dog

by Calvin Wapasa

If taking home a pet is not something that you have decided seriously, then you better not take your kids into a pet store or you will only end up perpetrating one of life's greatest mistakes. You shouldn't be surprised seeing your kids getting hooked and attached with the cutest puppy that they can find.

You just can't say no since you will be given with a puppy that looks so sweet with its wet brown eyes which seems to beg you to take him home together with your wailing kids who are just ready to throw their tantrums provided you get them what they wish. Aside from the unstoppable cries of your children, you will likely find yourself remembering the past particularly those moments that you had with your family dog - you're paying for a shopping cart full of dog stuff - plus the pup.

There's no greater buyer's remorse than that felt after buying a dog on impulse. Only then, after several days of bonding with the dog, that you will find out that the character of the dog is not something that could fit your household's way of life. Then, you tend to start taking the dog for granted since you will no longer have the tendency to take him for a walk or devote your working hours just to feed him. The feeling is like having another unwanted child in the family. Those little puppy accidents, chewed furniture, night-time barking and other normal dog behaviors become more and more irritating. That's the point where some dead dog owners punish the dog to the point of abuse or negligence.

Many dogs who were victims of a whim buying done by some families or an adult taking for granted the true essence of owning a dog usually end up in shelters. Being educated about certain facts that has something to do with the dog such as its traits and possible future size was not the thing that those kinds of owners considered since they were so amused with the cute and marvellous features of the pup. In a matter of months, the conflict begins. It is not completely the fault of the dogs why they were sent to pounds and usually, many of them are prospective pets provided that the right family would adopt them. The main offense for that was simply because the wrong kind of household who were not actually serious about taking home a dog chose them in the first place.

The degree to which dogs require, differs from one breed to another. Some of them need a lot of hours playing and bonding with you in a day to day basis. If you don't provide it, they find it on their own - and it usually involves chewing or barking. Other dog breeds need daily room to run and play. If you want your children to have some special companions, then these kinds of dogs can really serve them well. Some dogs which you can see play well and interact better with older kids may tend to feel awkward with the kind of interaction that younger kids would give them. You simply need to know what breed of dog is the best match for your home, family and available time.

Slow down as you visit dog breeders or pet stores and spend time seeing the dogs. Hearing the puppy bark with excitement and seeing those pleasing brown eyes which seem to beg you can really break your heart once you leave that pet store, but you want to make certain that when your dog comes home, this really becomes home for the dog, and not just another place to pass through. Let your kids stay at home if you don't want to commit any errors of taking the wrong dog home since you can actually collect a lot of information regarding the dog's breed and other important details concerning it without any further troubles. - 20511

Chihuahua Urinary Tract Infection

Chihuahua Urinary Tract Infection

by Geraldine Dimarco

Urinary tract infection (UTI) in dogs has become common. This condition arises when bacteria gains access inside your dog?s body and overcomes its immune system. As a responsible dog owner, it is our responsibility to ensure that our dog is in top shape and free from health risks such as this.

There are several ways to tell if your dog is suffering from urinary tract infection. It is important that as a dog owner, you be alert and knowledgeable enough to know the telltale signs of urinary tract infection in your dog. Some symptoms may include blood in the dog?s urine, a foul smell in the dog?s urine, a change in its urinating pattern, and an abrupt change in its behavior. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a veterinarian so your dog would immediately be given proper medication.

If you are hesitant to bring your dog to a veterinarian for financial or whatever reasons, you may use natural remedies to try to minimize your dog?s infection or better yet, cure it. There is a very effective natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs.

Homeopathy is a natural remedy for urinary tract infection in dogs. Unlike antibiotics or the conventional mode of treatment, it is 100% safe and has no danger of side effects. Moreover, it is affordable and can prevent recurrence of infection.

As in the case of humans, female dogs are more likely to develop UTI than male dogs. This is because bacteria can develop more rapidly in female dogs because they have a shorter urethra compared to their male counterparts.

Although dogs are bound to suffer dog urinary problems in any given time of their life, it is still important that owners know how to at least minimize the possibilities of their dog contracting such a disease. Some of the ways to prevent this from happening are the following: giving the dog enough clean water to drink everyday, giving the dog a regular bath and shampoo, giving the dog proper nutrition and diet, bringing the dog to the vet regularly for check-up, and giving the dog citrus juices and vitamin C.

Clean water is essential as it helps flush out unwanted organisms and bacteria out of the dog?s body. Proper nutrition and diet also helps to keep your dog healthy. Bringing your dog to the vet for regular check-ups helps to determine early signs of dog urinary problems and thus minimize the chances for bacteria to cause greater harm to your dog?s internal system. Citrus juices lessen the presence of bacteria by making your dog?s urine acidic. Vitamin C helps to keep your dog in top shape by strengthening its immune system.

Indeed, UTI is a rising health problem for dogs in our modern society. However, there are ways to prevent this condition from occurring in your dogs. One way is to give your dog enough water to drink everyday. Water helps to flush out bacteria our of your dog?s system. Another way is to bathe your dog regularly. Regular bathing helps to ward off bacteria from entering your dog?s body. As the famous saying goes, ?prevention is always better than cure?. - 20511

Exposed: Crate Training Dogs

Exposed: Crate Training Dogs

by Craig Clemins

Crate Training is a training technique used to house train dogs. A crate is a small kennel that can be closed off and is usually made out of plastic or steel wire. Crate training benefits both the dog and its owner.

The main reason that crate training is so effective is that dogs hate to pee where they sleep. Abiding by this principal, they learn to hold their urges to urinate until they are outside. Little by little the dog learns that outside is the place to pee.

During crate training, a puppy will spend almost all its time inside its crate. The puppy will only be allowed out of the crate during feeding time and when it is being supervised. Whenever the puppy is let out of its den (crate) it should be taken to the designated toilet area immediately.

A plastic crate that has a wire door is probably the most useful type of crate as it is light to carry and easy to clean. The ideal crate should be about one and a half times your dog?s body length and allow 2 ? 3 inches of room above your dogs head when it?s in the standing position. Crates that are bigger than this should be shortened (block one end off) as they will allow sufficient room for your dog to go to the toilet.

During crate training, the puppy's toilet breaks should be at regular intervals throughout the day. This reduces the likelihood of accidents occurring. As puppies get older they naturally become better at holding there urges to go to the toilet.

Another way to help ensure good results is to build up a image of the crate with your dog. You can do this by progressively feeding your dog closer and closer to the crate, by filling the crate with your dogs favourite items and by rewarding good behaviour inside the crate. Ideally the crate should be a place your dog wants to go and is happy to be.

Never use the crate as a prison or place of punishment ? this will seriously set you back in your crate training efforts. Try not to leave your dog in the crate for long periods of time as this may cause you dog to eventually fear the crate.

While crate training has been proven to be a highly effective way of house training puppies, it is not universally accepted. Some experts claim that puppies can become too attached to the crate after being locked inside it for such a long time.
