Dog training can be done a number of ways and different methods get different results. Below are 8 tips to improve the way your train your dog. Master these 8 tips and your dog will be a superstar!
#1. Vary Your Training Pattern
Mix up when and where you train your dog. Try spending 15 minutes with your dog in the morning instead of 15 at night. A change of scenery always keeps things interesting for you and your dog and you will get better results.
#2. Keep Positive!
Training should be as fun as possible. Your dog will pick up new commands much more easily when it's having fun. Go into training in a positive state of mind and always use positive reinforcement to encourage desirable outcomes.
#3. Perfect a Few Exercises
To start with try to master a few select exercises and practice these in different places at different times, once you have mastered one exercise more on to the next. This is far more effective than trying to teach your dog a wide range of different commands and being mediocre in all of them.
#4. Use Body Language to Communicate
Use body language to communicate more clearly with your dog. Ideally, spoken commands and body language should go hand in hand. Whether you use them together or individually, make sure you use body language.
#5. Take Not of Your Dogs Facial Expressions
Your dog's facial expressions and body positions can let you know how he's feeling. A stiff body and a closed mouth may mean your dogs tense, a relaxed body with an open mouth most likely means your dog is happy.
#6. Be Consistent
Being consistent is extremely important when trying to train a dog. Keep things as simple as possible. Use short commands and stick to them. Never use multiple commands for the same trick - this will only confuse your dog.
#7. Teach Good Behavior INSTEAD Of Punishing Bad Behavior...
If your dog consistently does something you don't want it to do, figure out what you DO want your dog to do and teach him how to do that (using positive reinforcement techniques). You will find this is much more effective and less stressful than trying to correct bad behavior.
#8. Learn How to Teach Your Dog From an Expert Dog Trainer
Training animals isn't intuitive, it doesn't come naturally to humans and we're not taught how to do it in school. Don't assume you know how just because you love your dog! Use a professional in depth training guide to really get the best out of your dog.
