Why do some dogs bark so much and how to stop a dog barking, the solutions to both these questions are described in detail in this article. If your dog barks more than you would like, you are not alone. Dog owners report that this is one of the annoying behaviors they encounter, hence knowing how to stop a dog barking is a sought after skill. The first step in stopping a dog barking is to first identify the underlying cause of the barking.

How to Stop a Dog Barking

Soon I will explain how to stop a dog barking, first however it's important to understand why dogs bark As soon as puppies can bark they start to realize that it's a great way to get attention. Old dogs still know that barking gets attention and they sometimes bark if they are bored or need exercise. They also bark due to a lack of mental stimulation or because they have been at home alone for too long.

If this is the reason your dog's barking, start to take action to remedy the problem today. Try to take your dog for a walk once a day where possible. Obedience train your dog a few times each week and play fun interesting games with him. Give him a few new toys so that he can entertain himself when he's alone. Give your dog some 1 on 1 time every day for at least 5 minutes.

Your dog may also be barking because he's afraid of something. Loud noises such as those caused during thunder storms often cause dogs to bark. If this is happening to your dog, take him to a safe place like his crate and turn a radio on to provide some cover for the noise outside.

The final common cause of barking is separation anxiety. Dogs sometimes suffer separation anxiety is they are attached to you or if they have recently lost someone they love (such as someone leaving home - through divorce or death etc). If your dog suffers from anxiety separation you will need to train your dog that it's ok to be at home alone. You can do this by leaving the house for a short period of time (a minute or two) and then returning, slowly build up the time. When you return to your dog give him a treat (if he hasn't barked).

Another method that can be used to help address the problem of barking dogs is to use a barking collar. These collars spray a small amount of citronella (it's totally harmless) in the dogs face each time he barks. Not everyone agrees with these collars but they have been proven to work. - 20511
