Jack Russell Terriers are probably the most watched dogs on screen. They are often seen on tv and movies, as playful and lovable companions, that even those who are not familiar with breeds can easily spot them. However, popularity does not delete the truth that JRTs are natural hunters.
Jack Russell Terriers are descendants of small and lovable terriers in Europe and are originally bred for hunting. These days, even though they are popular as pets for the family and as playful friends, their natural abilities as hunters are still recognized because it's what they are good at. If it's your first time as a Jack Russell Terrier owner, better learn these basic facts to help you raise your companion very well.
Keep in mind that Jack Russell Terriers are naturally feisty, happy, and energetic. It is important that you give them your utmost attention, allow them to be busy and playful, train and discipline them, and understand and accept them as hunters and not just any common social dogs. These are what it takes to be the owner of these lovable pets so better prepare yourself to have this kind of disposition.
JRTs have the tendency to be aggressive with other dogs and smaller animals such as cats and guinea pigs. This situation often results to the death of other animals or the terrier itself. However, their aggressiveness can be controlled through training and discipline.
Your responsibility as the owner requires you to be responsible, consistent, and authoritative. Provide them with rules to abide and limit them on what they are allowed to do. Failure on these things can sometimes lead to their negative behaviors such as aggressiveness, snapping, and too much barking.
JRTs are innately energetic and they like to bark, dig, chase, and explore. A calm and quiet lifestyle doesnt match them as this will only contribute to their negative behaviors. They need activities to occupy them, outdoors for them to explore, and they need to be trained to be social so they wont fight or kill smaller animals and other terriers- they also fight animals five times larger their size.
Raising and training Jack Russell Terriers require patience and authority. If you think you want to adopt one, make sure to have these qualities. Bear in mind that they are natural hunters so don't resent them if they try to be one.
A lot of first time owners misunderstand JRTs because they fail to research about them first hand. Jack Russell Terriers are intelligent pets and they are great companions and loyal friends. Only know the correct ways to raise them and you will have happy and fulfilled days with them. - 20511
