There are dog training books and dog training tips aplenty, but most of them will not cover the three most disgusting habits that dogs are prone to exhibiting.
There are no doubt others but here is a quick look at three of the worst habits dog can have.
Excessive Licking
Already being a dog owner you will be familiar with the way your pet likes to greet you when you come home, usually it involves slobbery licks most of the time! This may be fine for you now but not so for your guests, especially if they are not dog lovers.
In actual fact your dogs tongue is one of the ways that they interact with the world around them. It is used to greet humans and other animals, but fortunately you will probably only get the odd lick now and again.
In some cases, your dog will treat licking as an Olympic event where you and your clothing are the playing field. While occasional slobber is tolerable, these dogs will drive you crazy with their incessant licking and slobbering.
Therefore, the first of the dog training tips is simply to understand why your dog is behaving like it is and to correct the underlying problem.
Usually the cause will simply be that your dog is lonely or feeling insecure. Think back to see if you have been giving your pet less of your attention lately, maybe you have been very busy.
The Problems With Coprophagia
Eating feces of another dog is not something that all dogs do, in fact, most will not. Now they will consume the feces of other species with great appreciation most of the time, but not normally their own or another dogs.
No one really knows exactly why some dogs exhibit this behavior, dog training guides may speculate but even vets are puzzled by the activity. The best thing you as a dog owner can do is try to incorporate a few of the dog training tips below to curb the incidences.
Keep your home and yard free from doggy poo; use a scooper as soon as he has done his business.
- Make a mental note to teach your dog the leave it command for when he or she is off the leash
- Try adding something to make the poo unpalatable to your dogs diet like pumpkin or grated zucchini
Nipping and Biting Problems
It may be painful for humans but biting and nipping are one of the first methods of communication your dog will learn as a puppy in order to interact with its litter mates.
It is also when puppies are together that they learn that biting too hard is not a good thing.
Commonly used dog training tips for addressing nipping and biting problems include:
Other puppies will usually sound out a yelp to inform a litter mate that they are biting too hard, therefore it is often helpful to say No! loudly to your dog or shout a similar loud noise to let your puppy know that they are using too much force in their bite.
Isolation is another way the puppies reinforce bite inhibition, the bully of the litter will be avoided by the rest of the litter. You can imitate these actions by refusing to look at or talk to your dog for a short amount of time after the offense.
Keep a ready supply of suitable chews for your puppy to give alternative uses for its teeth.
A dog training book is always a good item to have even if you attend classes as it reminds you of the dog training tip that you are bound to have forgotten once you get home or need to practice. - 20511
