If the Standard Bull Terrier appears to be a ferocious gladiator dog and a gentle companion, the Miniature Bull Terrier is exactly the same only smaller. The Standard Bull Terrier was originally used as a fighter dog in the notorious bull baiting past time of 1800s England but when this act was prohibited, breeders started to take care of this breed for companionship purposes only. Soon after, the Miniature Bull Terrier was born in the purpose of owning the same Bull Terrier appearance and characteristics but only in a more portable size.
Like the standard Bull Terrier, this miniature dog also possesses a head that everyone describes as the "egg shape". Its eyes are triangular and closely set, and the tail is also carried horizontally. When it comes to the body, just like its bigger counterpart, this mini dog is also robust, lean and muscular.
The coat of the Mini Bull Terrier is skin-tight, short, harsh to the touch and shiny. It is often colored in white, white with other color patterns, or purely single-colored. Aside from white, Mini Bull Terriers are also found in black, fawn, red, brindle and tricolor except blue and liver which are considered unfavorable.
The first Bull Terrier actually came out looking like a Miniature Bull Terrier. But for gaming purposes, breeders developed it to be much larger and so they cross-bred it with the Spanish Pointer. In the early 1900s, there had been lots of Bull Terrier sizes that some ended up like a Chihuahua.
By the 1970's, a weight limit for the breed was established to determine the standard from a miniature. For the miniature-sized Bull Terrier, the established height should be under 14 inches but not less than ten inches. The weight was agreed to range between 25- 35 kilograms.
The Miniature Bull Terrier, like its standard counterpart is also fearless and ferocious in defending the human masters. But like a natural terrier, this breed has the tendency to have bouts of stubbornness. This dog is too energetic to be handled by small children and so training for the dog and instruction for the kids are necessary to avoid knocking them over.
This breed seems to ignore or forget the fact that it is little because in encounters with other larger breeds, it is as courageous and vicious as a standard Bull Terrier. It doesn't back down when it comes to fighting for or protecting the family and this is a manifestation that the breed is a loyal companion. On normal and peaceful days, however, the Mini Bull Terrier is bursting with energy, playful, and gets along with a lot of people.
The Mini Bull Terrier will suit just fine in an apartment kind of living because it is not that active indoors. The most important thing to do, however, is to provide this dog plenty of exercises everyday. Grooming for this dog only requires once a week combing or brushing because its short hair cleans easily. - 20511
