How to Keep Dogs from Digging

How to Keep Dogs from Digging

by Andyl Hannerl

When your dog barks ceaselessly, runs away, urinates in your house every day, or chews up your shoes or anything in sight, can cause an owner to be anxious. You can steer clear of these behaviors by training your dog properly and is done by starting training when your dog is still a puppy.

Accurate training would require the owner to be consistent in giving consequences for a poor behavior and giving rewards for positive behavior. Most dogs love having the attention of their owners, and ignoring the dog when they are misbehaving and giving your dogs attention when it is properly behaving is what is needed to alter the behavior of the dog. Another thing that dogs enjoy doing is digging, which can be a headache for the owners.

Reasons and Answers

There are many reasons behind digging, which means in order to keep dogs from digging, owners need to examine the reasons behind the digging first. Dogs may dig just enjoy digging. Some dogs may be bored and need more activity and play in their lives. Others may be trying to escape the yard because they want to find a mate, not being fixed. Others may enjoy digging in fresh dirt or in dirt that has been freshly fertilized.

Some dogs dig because it is part of their nature and dogs usually dig so they can lie on something cool and so they make a little den of their own. Lastly, most dogs dig, so they can hide their bones or food. The greatest mean of keeping your dogs from digging is ensuing that they have a lot of exercise or some mental stimulation.

The best way to keep dogs from digging is to make sure that they have adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Dogs like to learn new tricks and to experience new things. A bored dog is a destructive doge in most cases, so a dog that is well exercised and has new situations to experience is more likely to avoid destructive activity.

Refrain from giving your dogs bones as this is one way of preventing your dogs from digging. Give him treats that can be consumed readily without leaving anything to bury.

Another thing that can hinder your dog from digging is by keeping balloons in the area where they usually dig. This way, when it starts to dig again, the balloon will pop, scaring your dog and that would make digging a negative experience for him; therefore, he would not want to dig again.

Make sure that you do not leave you dog unsupervised in the yard, this is so when you see him digging, you can spray him by a hose or a squirt gun to keep him from digging again. - 20511
