Hailed as one of the biggest and probably one of the oldest dog breeds, the Dogue de Bordeaux is definitely a stunner. Also called as French Mastiff, this breed is completely amazing in its gigantic figure and muscle-prone body. With a dog this big, you can definitely expect strength, power and commanding presence.
The Dogue had been in existence since the early fourteenth century in the Bordeaux region of France and had been used mostly as a hunting, herding and guard dog. Due to its powerful body, intelligence and strength, it has also been used to carry heavy loads, pull carts and fight along soldiers during important battles between France and other countries. Moreover, this breed has been famous for its ability to bait bulls, jaguars and other fierce animals.
Wealthy families before are often seen with the Dogue and they would use it to guard their wealth and families. The poor ones have a French Mastiff as well but were not so applauded simply because it came from poor breeders. With the advent of the French Revolution, many of these wealthy families and their pets perished but the poor people and their French Mastiffs survived.
The strong and champion Dogues of today are said to have come from the survivor breed of the poor people. The French Mastiff is well-known for its unswerving devotion and loyalty to its master and curiously, this has angered Hitler. His dislike for the French Mastiff led to the execution of many of this breed during World War I.
The origin of the Dogue Bordeaux is not entirely known but several theories point to some possibilities. Some say that this breed came from either the Tibetan Mastiff or the Greco Roman Molossoids. Some say that this breed has two types before, the Dogue and the Doguin, but only the Dogue has survived to continue the legacy of the original breed.
There are also many dog breeds today that originated from the Dogue de Bordeaux and these breeds were particularly bred for bull baiting purposes. The Bullmastiff and the Bulldog are only two of the modern breeds that have been proven to be descendants of the Dogue. Indeed, tracing back the history of these pseudo-Dogues, you will realize that breeders were trying to create a smaller version of the giant French Mastiff but at the same time still very powerful in crushing the bulls and bears.
Today, the Dogue de Bordeaux has been selectively bred to be calmer and tamer compared to the Dogue de Bordeaux of the past. The Dogue of today is unparalleled in terms of devotion, love and loyalty to the family that owns it. It has a tendency to be attached with the family and this is a clear manifestation that indeed this breed has changed in to a better disposition.
The Dogue is often compared to the English Mastiff but the latter is often measured in length while the Dogue is measured in width and muscle composition. For the male Dogue, the minimum weight is 110 lbs while for the female Dogue, the minimum weight is 99 lbs. The coats should be in light red to deep ultra red with occasional markings of black, brown or red mask. - 20511
