Preventing Common Dog Illnesses

Preventing Common Dog Illnesses

by Moses Wright

Many common dog illnesses can be prevented. Some common dog illnesses are prevented by vaccinations that dogs normally receive. Other common dog illnesses can be prevented by the dog owners vigilance.

Not all common dog illnesses are preventable. Getting a dog vaccinated can prevent some dog illnesses that are serious and potentially fatal. Vaccines for rabies and parvovirus are examples of ways to prevent potentially fatal dog illnesses.

The viral infection known as rabies is contracted through a bite from an infected animal. Rabies is one of the few dog diseases that can infect humans. Rabies in dogs has become much less common since dogs are routinely vaccinated for this disease.

Parvovirus is another viral infection that can be prevented with dog vaccinations. Parvovirus causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms including bloody diarrhea. Young puppies with the parvovirus can experience sudden death is the viral infection attacks the heart.

A common reason for taking a dog to the veterinarian is diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by viral infections or ingesting dangerous substances or rotten food. A dog owner should keep garbage secured from a dogs access to help prevent diarrhea.

Vomiting is another common cause for a veterinary appointment. Vomiting can be caused by the same things that can cause diarrhea in dogs. If the dog has both vomiting and diarrhea, has blood in either one, or if either persists for more than a day, the dog owner should contact the veterinarian immediately.

Dirt and debris in the dogs ears can increase the dogs risk of ear infections. Ear infections are another common cause of needing veterinary care. The presence of ear mites increases the dogs risk for ear infections, therefore any ear mites should be treated promptly.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common dog diseases that can be prevented. Many dog owners neglect their dogs oral health. If a dog owner does not brush the dogs teeth daily and take the dog to the veterinarian for regular cleanings, tartar builds up on the dogs teeth and causes infections. - 20511
