In 18th century, the notorious past time of England was bull baiting, a sport wherein dogs were used to attack and defeat raging bulls, bears and other big animals as a form of entertainment. The dog breed that rose to this occasion was the very popular but now extinct Old English Bulldog. Audience and dog breeders alike marveled at this breed's excellence and fierceness in the fighting pit and its line sired the other bull baiting but gentler breeds such as pit bull terriers, boxers and more.
The craze of bull baiting fetched not only the interest of a lot of common people but royalties and noblemen as well. The popular locations for this bloody past time were Westminster Pit, Old Conduit Fields and Bear Garden. Before the end of the century, however, the Cruelty to Animals Act was permitted in order to put a stop in this horrid animal treatment.
Because of this ban, the breeding of the pure Old English Bulldog died out and this caused its untimely and sad extinction. Breeders thought that there would be no further use for this breed's raging strength and fighting instinct and so they decided to just develop other breeds that are powerful and courageous too but without the ferocity of the Old English Bulldog. So while the Old English Bulldog perished in extinction, newer breeds surfaced and became the only remembrance of the once glorious bull fighter dog.
The Old English Bulldog was said to have come from the crosses of the ancient war dogs Mastiff, Alaunt and other fighter dogs. The Old English Bulldog breed represents strength in almost every aspect starting from its hard-gripping bite to its muscled and sturdy body build, and so much more. The last perfect depiction of the Old English Bulldog was that of a Duke of Hamiltons pets and these dogs were named Wasp, Billy and Child.
Although now extinct, breeders still attempted to revive the line of this once great and powerful breed. That's why in 1971, a man named David Leavitt using Dr. Fechimer's cattle line breeding scheme, recreated the Old English Bulldog which turned out to be successful. This newly revived breed is now called the Olde English Bulldogge.
The creation of this new breed resulted to a dog that resembles the appearance, athleticism and health of the Old English Bulldog but with a tamer and gentler temperament. This new breed is said to be composed of 1/6 Bullmastiff, 1/6 American Pit Bull Terrier, 1/2 Bulldog and 1/6 American Bulldog. It should be clear, however, that this new breed is not the Old English Bulldog because the latter is an extinct breed that can no longer be revived but merely recreated as close as possible to its original look and disposition.
The new Olde English Bulldogge is also powerful and fast yet sociable and very loving. It still has an aggressive streak but this is only directed towards the same sex dog of another breed. This can be avoided though through proper training and socialization.
This breed is extremely active and thus needs daily exercise in order to utilize its excessive energy. Additionally, this revived breed is bigger in size and heavier in weight than the extinct Old English Bulldog. If it will be used in bull baiting, it cannot duck effectively from the raging horn or avoid being thrown up in to the air by the angry bull. - 20511
