How To Train Your Dog With Positive Methods

How To Train Your Dog With Positive Methods

by Harry Littman

Dogs will naturally do things that we don't want them to do. They will chew anything that they can get their teeth on, they will bark like there is no tomorrow, they will pee and poo where they please, they will dig holes and destroy the backyard, and so on. If we want the dog to behave, we must train him. Dogs do not possess the ability to learn proper behavior on their own.

The two primary dog training tools are positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Today, positive reinforcement is gaining more and more popularity among dog owners and is recommended by most experts in the field as a principal training technique.

What is positive reinforcement training? It's a method where the trainer reinforces a desired behavior with a reward, with something that the dog likes or wants. Every time a dog performs a desired behavior, he gets a reward which makes it more likely he will repeat the behavior in the future. A reward could be a tasty treat, a hug, a favorite toy, or just attention and interaction with the owner.

The opposite of positive reinforcement in a negative reinforcement where the trainer delivers a punishment, or negative consequence, when the dog performs an undesirable behavior. Punishment gets the dog to stop doing something. Negative reinforcement is connected to misbehavior.

Unlike negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement is not associated with stress, fear, avoidance, and other negative emotions. In most cases, it's more effective than punishment.

Although the main training method should be positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement does have its role in the training process. But it should be used very carefully, because it can produce a significant long-lasting negative effects.

I myself always use mainly positive reinforcement techniques to train my dogs and I love training them. This builds a strong relationship and it's a great way to bond. Always remember, a well behaved dog is a happy dog and a credit to its owner. - 20511

Basics Of Dog Ramps: Why They're Valuable

Basics Of Dog Ramps: Why They're Valuable

by Ralph Jordan

The older we get, the more our joints hurt. Climbing and descending stairs, and jumping down from raised heights can slowly take their toll. What's more, if we suffer from illness, arthritis, or a weight issue, these activities can have an even worse impact on our bodies. To be sure, the things we used to do as children without giving them a second thought now seem to have a punishing effect on us.

Dogs feel the same way and cope with many of the same issues. The problem for them is that they are often expected to continue jumping onto beds, furniture, or into cars long after their joints protest. As a result, it's not uncommon for our canine companions to pull muscles or suffer lasting discomfort.

Fortunately, we can provide our pooches with relief by investing in a high-quality dog ramp. Below, we'll describe how they're used and explain what you should look for when shopping for one.

How They're Used

During each day, your canine will likely jump onto your couch, bed, and other furniture several times. Plus, if you regularly take him with you on the road, he'll be expected to jump into your vehicle. Over time, that constant jumping can have a severe impact on his joints.

Also, consider that many breeds are smaller; making those jumps is much harder on their bones and can eventually lead to painful arthritis. And for dogs that are older or suffer from a variety of health issues, making the jumps is nearly impossible without injuring themselves in the process.

A ramp removes the need to jump. They can transform painful climbs into a gentle slope that your pooch can navigate at his own pace. Plus, there's no need to leave your canine's joints and bones vulnerable to constant pounding when he jumps off your furniture. A ramp lets him descend easily protecting his joints from harm.

Factors To Consider When Shopping

The three main considerations when buying a dog ramp are strength, portability, and safety. First, it must have the strength to support your pooch's weight. Some models are designed for small breeds while others are built for larger breeds. The packaging will provide the ramp's weight capacity, so be sure to look for it.

Second, choose a model that is portable. Chances are, you'll want to enjoy the flexibility of transporting it easily from one room to another, or to your vehicle. It should have a handle and fold easily for storage.

Third, look for features that help ensure the safety of your canine. For example, a lot of models come with side rails, an anti-skidding feature, and stabilizing latches. Some even have an extra traction feature that prevents a nasty slip from happening during wet weather.

A dog ramp can make life far more comfortable for your pooch. Not only will it protect his joints from discomfort and pain, but it can also help prevent unexpected injuries from poorly-planned jumps. - 20511

Pet Urns - Selecting The Right One

Pet Urns - Selecting The Right One

by Pete Stone

Pet urns can be the best way to remember and honor the loss of your pet. You can often find them at a veterinarians office, a pet funeral home some specialized pet stores and online. With such a large selection available of pet cremation urns it can be difficult picking the perfect one to remember and honor your pet. With all the materials, styles and colors available it can be difficult making the perfect choice.

The loss of a pet can be traumatic to say the least and making a decision for burial, cremation or having a funeral can be stressful but having a pet memorial or pet urn to house keepsakes, photos or tags can often help with the loss. Pet urns com in many different shapes and styles and are often used for either burial or display in the house or garden. The more popular materials usually involve ceramic, metal, stone or wood or a combination of the materials. Ones made of metal will are often from bronze, brass or copper. Wood urns are often made from hardwood but can be made from pine. Ceramics are usually molded into vases or sometimes figurines.

The material of you pet urn will also determine where you may place it. You should decide in advance where you intend on placing or displaying your urn. If you place it in the elements or outside consider metal or stone if it is to be displayed indoors consider one made of wood or ceramics. Placing a metal urn outdoors will likely make it tarnish much faster regardless of the metal and will show signs within weeks. You could also consider cleaning it on a regular schedule with the appropriate cleaner. Consider trying to seal the surface with an acrylic floor wax. You can do this by wiping very slowly a sponge that has the wax poured on it this way you can avoid sightly air bubbles that may appear on the surface. The wax will not last forever but usually holds up for several months.

Another common type of urn is a pet photo urn. Often made of one of the mentioned materials it will often have a placeholder for your pets photo including a holder for a metal plaque that you can have you pets name engraved on with a few loving words. In some cases the a photo of your pet and a few lines of kindness can be laser engraved onto the surface of the pet urn. This is often done on stone or wood surfaces.

Consider stone or metal for a lasting burial urn. Many people often plant a small shrub or plant over the area to designate it as a pet memorial. You could also use yard ornaments or concrete statues to mark off the area as a dedicated pet memorial.

You may have recently lost your dog, cat, rabbit, bird or another friend from the animal kingdom regardless of how you shop for pet urns you have many options to choose from and when buying online you often have a much larger selection that if you buy veterinarians office, or a pet crematorium pet funeral home. When you buy a pet urn online you will often save a lot of money and buy something much nicer in honor of your pet. - 20511

How To Remove Ticks On Dogs

How To Remove Ticks On Dogs

by Moses Wright

It is important for a dog owner to know how to remove ticks on dogs. The small parasitic insects known as dog ticks can carry and transmit disease.

Tick infestations are common in grassy and wooded areas. Ticks seek potential hosts by sensing body heat, scent, and the carbon dioxide the host exhales.

Dog ticks can carry numerous diseases, but they cannot transmit Lyme disease to their hosts. Even though people associate Lyme disease with tick bites, only certain ticks can transmit Lyme disease. Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease, but dog ticks cannot.

When the dog has been outside especially in grassy or wooded areas, the dog owner should inspect the dog for ticks. If the tick is found, a tick should be carefully removed as soon as possible.

Because part of the tick could break off and remain in the dog's skin, the removal of a tick must be done carefully. The dog is at risk of infection and acquiring diseases if the head of the tick remains embedded in the dog's skin.

Striking a match, blowing out, and holding the hot matchstick against a tick is a common method for removing a tick. However, this method can cause the tick to vomit in the dog which can cause the transmission of disease from the tick.

People often think that ticks should be removed by covering the tick with vegetable oil. This too can cause the tick to vomit into the wound.

Using a tweezers is usually considered the best way to remove a tick. The dog owner should attempt to pull the tick from the tick's head which means that the tweezers has to be placed extremely close to the dog's skin.

By getting as close to dog's skin, the dog owner may be able to prevent the tick's head from being left inside the dog's skin. If the ticks head remains in the skin, the dog owner may be able to remove it with tweezers.

Scraping the tick bite with a credit card is another method for removing the ticks head from the dog's skin. The dog owner should take the dog to the veterinarian if the dog owner cannot get the tick's head out of the dog's skin. - 20511

Saving Money with Discount Dog Toys

Saving Money with Discount Dog Toys

by Kim Fleming

When it comes to choose toys for your dog, expensive is not always the best. If you are a start purchaser, discounter dog toys can equally entertain your pet while save you money in the mean time. As a dog owner and lover, you may like to check out how to shop at a lower price without sacrificing your dog's fun.

Dog Toys

Dogs are naturally playful, and therefore giving toys to you dog is a great way to show your love. But dog toys do more than just providing fun. They can channel your dog's energies away from unwanted behavior. Toys also provide a lot of physical and mental exercise. Best of all, dogs get to form loving connections with their masters when they play together with toys.

Dogs of All Kinds

Before you buy any dog toys, you should first remember that not all toys are good for all dogs. The size, texture and style of the toy should fit the size, age, breed and temperament of your pet. There are different ways for you to find out which toys are appropriate. You can trust the toy package label or the opinion of the sales clerk at the toy shop. You can also ask a veterinarian or a dog expert for his opinion.

If you make your purchase online, be sure you examine the descriptions carefully before you pay for any toy. Some reputable online stores will be so helpful as to provide you with comprehensive information on dog toys for specific dogs. You can also look into dedicated online sites that focus solely on dogs.

Discount Dog Toys

Somehow, it makes sense to shop for discount dog toys first instead of immediately settling for expensive kinds. This is because all dogs are unique. There is no guarantee that your dog will love a toy that other dogs go crazy over. You can get stuck with an expensive item that your dog will not even look at. Discounted toys are a great way to find out what your dog likes without blowing your money.

Some dog owners have no trust for discount dog toys, thinking that they are of a lower-quality or that they are second hand products. Some stores and online sites that offer discounts have low prices because they buy directly from factories and sell very close to the factory price. Some stores might also sell low because they are having a clearance sale.

Shopping Online

If you usually do your shopping online, make sure that you buy from a reputable store, preferably one that is solely engaged in selling dog toys. You can check out a store's reputation by checking customer feedback from forums and review sites.

Like their offline counterparts, online stores usually offer a wide range of toy choices. As a general rule, you should get a handful of various toys that you can rotate on different days of the week. This can help keep your dog interested in playing. Having a wide range of merchandise will also increase the chances that you will find just the right items for your dog.

If selected with care, you may find that most discount dog toys are just as good as the more expensive ones. They are such good bargains that you can hardly pass by. Just be sure to have in mind your dog's safety and best interests. - 20511

Hazards of Dog Fleas In The Dog Park

Hazards of Dog Fleas In The Dog Park

by Jane A Moore

My dog and I have a great weekend schedule. First thing each weekend morning we get up, have a snack, grab a latte at the coffee shop on the way, and end up at the dog park. I just love bringing my dog to the park, since it's pretty obvious that this is one of the highlights of his week.

We both enjoy our weekend routine - my dog gets lots of exercise and socialization, and I enjoy my coffee and do some socialization of my own. It's a great break for both of us. Unfortunately there are several times during the year that it seems inevitable that my dog would come home with fleas. I wouldn't really notice at the time, but through the week I'd notice some scratching, and think 'oh no, fleas again'.

Having fleas on my dog, and then in my house is not a very pleasant experience for either of us. My dog scratches constantly, and I spend entire weekends vacuuming, laundering to try and get rid of flea infestations, rather than enjoying our time at the dog park. So park visits were put on hold, rather than risk bringing home a new batch of fleas. After several weeks of missing the park, I decided there had to be better way. I needed to find out how to repel fleas, rather than avoid the weekend outings that my dog and I were both missing.

There was a little trepidation that came with my decision to go back to the dog park, so I decided to try and figure out some sort of natural flea repellant so we would avoid picking up fleas at the park. I talked to my dogs groomer, and she had some great suggestions. Two of the best natural flea treatments are garlic and citronella. I decided to try them both to double up on my dogs flea resistant powers.

I started to feed my dog a wee bit of garlic with his wet food every morning. The groomer told me that in a matter of days the garlic will start to be emitted through my dogs skin and saliva. The smell is imperceptible to humans but acts as a significant flea deterrent. She was right. At least, I have not noticed any fleas after going to the dog park. As an added precaution, I dosed a bandanna in some citronella oil and tied it around my dog's neck. My dog doesn't seem to mind the smell and it helps to repel fleas.

Now we are both back to enjoying our regular weekend routine at the dog park, without fear of picking up fleas and bringing them back home. I'm happy to have found a natural flea repellent, and I know my dog is just happy that she gets to go out play with all her friends every weekend again, even if they might have fleas. - 20511

What Is The Importance Of Insulating Your Dog's House?

What Is The Importance Of Insulating Your Dog's House?

by Moses Wright

Some climates necessitate appropriate insulation in accessories for the doghouse. In extremely cold weather or in high temperatures, not insulating a doghouse could jeopardize the health and safety of the dog.

The typical extreme weather for summer and winter months for that area determines the importance of insulating your dog's house. In regions of the world where there are extremely cold temperatures in winter or extremely high temperatures in summer, and insulated doghouse may not be enough protection for the dog.

Some premade doghouses are insulated. A doghouse kit or a customized, homemade doghouse can be insulated.

Different forms of insulation are used in doghouses. Polystyrene foam or are Styrofoam sheets may be used between the interior and exterior surfaces of the doghouse walls, and roof, and floor. Sometimes, the interior of the doghouse is lined with insulated panels.

The insulation helps the doghouse from becoming too hot or too cold. The insulation blocks some of the heat in summer. The insulation holds in the dog's body temperature which helps keep the inside of the doghouse warmer during the winter.

If the dog owner is buying insulated doghouse, the dog owner may want to question whether the doghouse has an insulated roof and floor, or if just the walls are insulated. The dog owner may want to ask what insulating material the doghouse contains and whether it requires any maintenance.

It is best for a dog that is going to be kept outdoors to begin to adjust to being outdoors from the time it is puppy. Dogs that have not been outdoors may have difficulty adjusting to the weather and other factors like boredom and a lack of social interaction.

Some dog breeds do well outdoors in temperatures that are similar to the areas where the dog breed originated. For example, a dog with a thick coat may tolerate colder temperatures then a dog with a short coat. However, the dog with thick coat may not be able to adjust the summer heat.

An insulated doghouse used in the winter needs to be the appropriate size for the dog. The insulated doghouse is heated by the dog's body temperature, therefore if the doghouse is too large, the space cannot be heated sufficiently by the dog's body temperature.

There are a few options for doghouses that are to be used during times of extreme temperatures. Heating pads and heating and cooling units are becoming common doghouse accessories.

Besides extreme temperatures, other effects of being outdoors for long periods of time can be detrimental to the dog. A dog that has kept outdoors can become aggressive due to the lack of socialization. - 20511
