Kennel Cough Causes And Symptoms

Kennel Cough Causes And Symptoms

by Moses Wright

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. This form of bronchitis is also called tracheobronchitis, Bordetella, Bordetellosis, or canine infectious tracheobronchitis.

Kennel cough is easily spread among dogs that are confined together in a kennel. This is why it is called kennel cough.

This respiratory infection can be contracted in ways other than confinement in a kennel with an infected dog. Kennel cough can be spread between dogs through contact with contaminated ground or toys that had been in contact with a dog with kennel cough.

The dog infected with kennel cough is likely to develop a dry cough that is described as hacking. Kennel cough can cause snorting, gagging, and vomiting. Kennel cough can also cause a fever.

Kennel cough is often diagnosed by the dogs history of being confined to a kennel in which a dog had a respiratory infection or contact with dogs that showed symptoms. A blood test or bacteria culture may be used to confirm the diagnosis of kennel cough.

The condition often goes away on its own. Kennel cough typically lasts ten to twenty days. In some cases the kennel cough may be prolonged or be recurrent. Severe cases of kennel cough can lead to pneumonia.

Antibiotics may be used to treat kennel cough. Dogs who received the vaccines for kennel cough are protected from contracting the respiratory infection. Any items that have been used by a dog with kennel cough should be disinfected to reduce the risk of infecting other dogs.

A dog owner should avoid boarding a dog in a kennel if the dog has not been vaccinated for kennel cough. Most kennels require that any dogs boarded have been vaccinated. Dog owners may be required to show proof of the vaccination.

Kennel cough does not usually cause any health problems for people in contact with the dog. However, young children or people with compromised immune systems may contract tracheobronchitis. - 20511
