Dogs are amazing creatures in that they conform to their owner's desires in almost all cases. You would be amazed at the things a dog will do to please their owner, especially when there is some sort of treat involved when all is said and done. There are things that they do as a matter of course, and those are the things that you're going to want to use while you train them to do tricks. If you combine these methods with treats, then you'll find that it's a lot easier to do the training.
Watch what your dog does for fun. Does he leap into the air pursuing butterflies? Does he like to turn in circles chasing his tail? If some kind of natural behavior can be turned into an enjoyable trick, that will streamline the training process. Be in readiness to use a consistent hand sign and verbal command when this behavior is displayed and then follow up with an immediate reward.
Some dogs have weight or diet concerns so don't go overboard with the food treats. Utilizing treats may be a reasonable way to get started and to galvanize your dog's attention and focus but in the long run you want your dog reacting and executing tricks based on vocal instructions, hand signs, and praise for a well done trick. Once the appropriate signal-command/reaction-trick associations are ingrained and habitual the use of treats can be limited or completely stopped.
Most dogs don't take very long to get the hang of it because they recognize quickly that when they do the trick they get the treat. This makes the training pretty simple, and you can use simple commands as a gateway to other tricks. One example might be using the command 'down' instead of 'play dead'. This will be a good starting point, and eventually you can move on to 'play dead'. 'stay', 'come', and 'sit' will also come naturally to the dog once a little bit of practice is done.
Another way to get your dog to pay close attention while you are trying to perfect tricks is to use their favorite toy. You can dangle this close to your dog's nose and say 'jump'. It may take a few minutes, but the dog will soon realize that the word 'jump' means...well...jump. After a while you won't even need the toy.
Your dog's ability to smell is a huge factor in the training. One thing that you can do is play a little game with your dog that involves hiding a favorite toy or treat and then having them find it. You can start out by putting the toy in a close location so that it's easy for them to find the object, and when they become more adept at that you can hide it farther away so that they have to work for it. After a while you will be able to use this as a viable trick to entertain your dog as well as any guests that you might have.
Do you want your dog to "high five" you? The best way to teach this trick is to use your dog's attachment to you as his owner and perchance his automatic behavior of presenting you his paw. You can stimulate this by getting down on your knees in front of your dog, offering your "paw" and giving the command "shake", "high five", "give me five", "five", or whichever command you decide to adopt. When he responds correctly, reward him with praise or a treat. He will rapidly get the idea.
The dog will usually have no hesitation to hand you their paw, and because of this you will sometimes be able to do the trick without saying anything. Sometimes you might actually have to lift their paw up for them, and even if this is the case then you'll still need to give the dog some praise so that they'll be willing to do it on their own next time.
When a trick has been taught it's not difficult to extend it. "Give me five" can smoothly be expanded into "sit up" by slowly elevating the paw so that the other foot will automatically lift up. By then grasping both paws so that the dog is in a "sit up" position, verbalizing the command and supporting the proper reaction with praise or a treat, he will, with repetition, connect the dots.
Needless to say there are many particular types of training. A lot of it is for behavior control, safety, proper social behavior, etc. Developing tricks is for you and your dog's amusement, recreation, and to help invigorate the relationship between you. - 20511
