Dog Destructive Chewing: Stopping Your Dog From Chewing Everything

Dog Destructive Chewing: Stopping Your Dog From Chewing Everything

by Tara Tisdale

Dog destructive chewing seems to vary among dogs. Some absolutely love to chew on everything and anything. Some dogs could care less.

Here are three top reasons why some doggies love to chew:

* Dogs have an ingrained desire to chew, most especially if it is a good tasting bone. However, there are also dogs that will chew up anything from a chair leg to a telephone cord! * Chewing does help nervous doggies to calm down. * Dogs who do not get enough exercise may chew to get rid of that extra energy.

So how do you stop destructive chewing?

1. You must dog proof your surroundings like you would with a toddler roaming around. Make sure you put your stuff away where the dog cannot reach it. Do not leave food or other temptations lying around.

2. Refrain from giving your dog your old personal items to chew on as this only serves to confuse the dog. They will not understand what is off limits.

3. Provide your doggie with other appropriate items to chew such as bones and toys. Make these things available so that your dog will begin to associate them as her own.

4. Make sure you are spending time supervising your dog. This way you can correct your dog anytime she is trying to chew something that is not a dog friendly item.

5. Come up with a sound (clapping, for example) that you can use when you catch your dog chewing on something bad. Do not spank or yell, as this will just scare the dog and lose the lesson of the moment. Instead, have a spray bottle with water or clap to let the dog know that this is a wrong action.

Above all, be patient and love your dog. You can take care of dog destructive chewing if you spend time doing the right things. - 20511
