Labrador Retriever: A Sweet and Gentle Disposition; Excellent and Efficient Skills and Talents

by Troy Richardson

Labrador Retriever is a pet name popular all over the world particularly in North America. When you have seen this breed, you will agree with the descriptions: genuinely kind-hearted, affable, family-friendly, reliable and clearly sharp in intellect. They are unquestionably lovable creatures and in fact, the American Kennel Club hailed them as the US's most famous pet.

Originally from the icy territories of Canada specifically Newfoundland, these useful and lovable gentle dogs spread in fame at places such as North America and the world all over. Before their present fame, however, going back to Newfoundland, they were great companions to fishermen and game hunters in the region. This breed tagged along side the fishermen to haul in fishing nets and captures back the jerking fishes that are trying to escape the perils of the nets; with hunters, they swam freezing lakes and other bodies of water to retrieve the game quickly and efficiently.

Today, the Lab is not merely limited to the hunting job anymore because even inside the homes of delicate and active families, they are welcomed, sheltered, and hailed as a magnificent pet. Labs perfectly epitomizes the loving and fun pet image of almost every family for they are playful, energetic, stable- tempered, affectionate, naturally sweet and eager to please. With friends, strangers, and other animals; they are equably friendly and will interact harmoniously.

This breed is kind-hearted, amiable, and very easy to train; their sweet disposition makes them supremely lovable and you won't be able to help but make them your favorite. They have an excellent level of intelligence and have an affectionate heart that allows them to be naturally tractable making them inarguable in obedience and reliability. It doesn't matter whether you tag this breed along in hunting, at play, or at competitions; you can always expect them to be docile and very capable and this has been proven by thousands of Labrador Retriever owners all over the world to be true.

The standard and only acceptable colors of Labrador Retriever are yellow, chocolate and black; any other color or combinations of the primary color is tagged for penalty by various kennel groups. Touching the fur, it would feel a bit hard or course as it is dense with short and thick inner and outer coats. This system of coat protects the Lab from harsh weathers and water temperatures and in fact, the coat is weather-proof and water-resistant; through this coating the Lab has been able to survive the conditions of Newfoundland.

As playmates to children, Labs make the perfect candidate for they are naturally fond of playing, running, are affectionate, kind, and friendly. Inside the house, this breed is a qualified watchdog and loyal companion; guarding tasks are not suited for them for they tend to be constantly friendly and welcoming to strangers and other dogs. In the outdoors during hunting, they are inherently retrievers meaning; they are quick, agile, have a high endurance, intelligent, and an excellent swimmer.

Today, however, because of the discovered trainable skills and excellent temperament of the Labs, they are taken from the four walls of the house and transferred to do a much important and socially meaningful task; these tasks go way past the popular obedience competitions and hunting expeditions. Outside the home, the Labs are equally efficient in police work, narcotics detection, and guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, and carting.

Every pet, no matter how docile or stubborn they are, needs an effective master in order for them to be the best that they can be. As for the Labs, a steady and firm hand that teaches and guides them are what it takes so they can be trained and honed to be better pets. The owner then, having a great pet such as the Lab must possess the qualities of a good leader and by saying so he must take control over the life and activities of the Labrador Retriever. - 20511
