Spaniel dog breeds came into existence as early as 15th century and historians claimed that spaniel dogs appeared on the paintings that were made during this time. These breeds were originally for the purpose of having a hunting companion. Before the guns were introduced, this dog used to flush out or spring the game bird into the air; hence the name springer.
When the shotgun came, the bird of prey was replaced. However, the English Springer spaniel remained being the best hunting aide. Being a skilled hunter of waterfowl and rabbit, people always recommend this type of dog breed for incomparably fun hunting games.
Since this dog always wants to be near its owner, it is usually compared to Velcro. That is why, it is usual to find this dog always being with the owner wherever he goes. Certainly, the English Springer Spaniel likes to be with his owner all the time.
Other reasons why this dog is often preferred to be a hunting companion is that it is playful, energetic, happy and cheerful compared to other breeds. As simple things as socks, empty bottles, or towels, the dog can already have fun playing alone. Its humor is far extraordinary than other breeds so owners prefer to have this type of dog breed.
The very important thing to consider in order to enhance the dogs total health is to have it engage in regular training. Flyball or Frisbee game is already enough activity for the dog's mental exercise aside from having it as a jogging companion. Since this dog breed already proved its worth as a good waterfowl or rabbit hunter, people always choose to have this dog for a more fun sporting adventure.
Since the spaniel is naturally possessed with high stamina, it needs to have high requirements on mental and physical exercise. If the spaniel dog owner is not heedful of the dog's overall health, there are great chances that it will get sick. It is important to ensure the health condition of the dog to keep it away from commonly contracted illnesses such as hip dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA.
Other diseases that are common to this breed type are ear infections. Failing to clean the dog's ears every week causes the growth of yeast and bacteria. Yeast and bacteria lead to ear and later brain infections; trimming the hair around the ears also help in the prevention bacterial and yeast growth.
This breed type is generally obedient, smart and energetic. Its exceptional attentiveness and alertness make good combination traits for being a perfect hunting companion. Stanley Cohen's "The Intelligence of Dogs" has declared the English Springer Spaniel as the 13th most reliable and intelligent dog breed. - 20511
