The physical differences between breeds are amazing, but despite the differences many character traits remain common between breeds.
There is an estimated amount of 800 different breeds in the developed countries alone. Albeit not always that distinct, the majority of them do differ quite substantially. A surprising variety especially when you compare it to humans that can may be categorized in 12 'breeds'.
The domestication of the dog began ten thousand years ago. It is widely acknowledged that the dog descends from the wolf. The dog is a relative young species and it is not surprising that they still display common behavior, as seen in wolves.
Dogs are exploratory:
Dogs teach themselves by exploring the terrain, very much like young infants. Funny enough it is thought that a dog has the same brain capacity as a 2 year old kid. As they learn by trial and error things might get damaged in the house. Dogs don't understand the difference between a precious carpet and grass. I recommend therefore that you train your dog to play with special dog toys. You should further teach him what acceptable behavior is in his new family.
I advise you to select special dog toys that are different from children's toys to make it easy for your dog to know what to play with. Dogs not only recognize an object by shape, but also by scent, so even if you decide to give him a tennis ball he will be capable of differentiation between the one you use for playing tennis and his. But all the same, the more the toys differ, the better it is.
Digging is an inevitable part of the dog's exploration. Be prepared to patch holes in your lawn if you let your dog unsupervised in the garden for a longer period. You can protect your plants with some cayenne pepper paste or bitter apple.
They are scavengers:
Dogs will eat just about anything that comes in their way, like cow droppings, dead rodents, grass and many more things that can even severely setup their digestive system, even when they have plenty to eat at home. You can punish him anything you like, but they will do it over and over again.
Dogs have a very limited capacity to understand consequences now with the cause in the past. Be careful when you take your dog out for a walk and make sure he can't eat anything what's bad for him.
Acknowledge what your dog is like. Treat him according to his nature and don't punish him for behavior that is in his genes. Enjoy his positive behavior traits like his need for companionship and petting. That the reason why you decided to have him in the first place. - 20511
