It is important for a dog owner to know how to remove ticks on dogs. The small parasitic insects known as dog ticks can carry and transmit disease.
Tick infestations are common in grassy and wooded areas. Ticks seek potential hosts by sensing body heat, scent, and the carbon dioxide the host exhales.
Dog ticks can carry numerous diseases, but they cannot transmit Lyme disease to their hosts. Even though people associate Lyme disease with tick bites, only certain ticks can transmit Lyme disease. Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease, but dog ticks cannot.
When the dog has been outside especially in grassy or wooded areas, the dog owner should inspect the dog for ticks. If the tick is found, a tick should be carefully removed as soon as possible.
Because part of the tick could break off and remain in the dog's skin, the removal of a tick must be done carefully. The dog is at risk of infection and acquiring diseases if the head of the tick remains embedded in the dog's skin.
Striking a match, blowing out, and holding the hot matchstick against a tick is a common method for removing a tick. However, this method can cause the tick to vomit in the dog which can cause the transmission of disease from the tick.
People often think that ticks should be removed by covering the tick with vegetable oil. This too can cause the tick to vomit into the wound.
Using a tweezers is usually considered the best way to remove a tick. The dog owner should attempt to pull the tick from the tick's head which means that the tweezers has to be placed extremely close to the dog's skin.
By getting as close to dog's skin, the dog owner may be able to prevent the tick's head from being left inside the dog's skin. If the ticks head remains in the skin, the dog owner may be able to remove it with tweezers.
Scraping the tick bite with a credit card is another method for removing the ticks head from the dog's skin. The dog owner should take the dog to the veterinarian if the dog owner cannot get the tick's head out of the dog's skin. - 20511
