How To Train Your Dog With Positive Methods

How To Train Your Dog With Positive Methods

by Harry Littman

Dogs will naturally do things that we don't want them to do. They will chew anything that they can get their teeth on, they will bark like there is no tomorrow, they will pee and poo where they please, they will dig holes and destroy the backyard, and so on. If we want the dog to behave, we must train him. Dogs do not possess the ability to learn proper behavior on their own.

The two primary dog training tools are positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Today, positive reinforcement is gaining more and more popularity among dog owners and is recommended by most experts in the field as a principal training technique.

What is positive reinforcement training? It's a method where the trainer reinforces a desired behavior with a reward, with something that the dog likes or wants. Every time a dog performs a desired behavior, he gets a reward which makes it more likely he will repeat the behavior in the future. A reward could be a tasty treat, a hug, a favorite toy, or just attention and interaction with the owner.

The opposite of positive reinforcement in a negative reinforcement where the trainer delivers a punishment, or negative consequence, when the dog performs an undesirable behavior. Punishment gets the dog to stop doing something. Negative reinforcement is connected to misbehavior.

Unlike negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement is not associated with stress, fear, avoidance, and other negative emotions. In most cases, it's more effective than punishment.

Although the main training method should be positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement does have its role in the training process. But it should be used very carefully, because it can produce a significant long-lasting negative effects.

I myself always use mainly positive reinforcement techniques to train my dogs and I love training them. This builds a strong relationship and it's a great way to bond. Always remember, a well behaved dog is a happy dog and a credit to its owner. - 20511

Basics Of Dog Ramps: Why They're Valuable

Basics Of Dog Ramps: Why They're Valuable

by Ralph Jordan

The older we get, the more our joints hurt. Climbing and descending stairs, and jumping down from raised heights can slowly take their toll. What's more, if we suffer from illness, arthritis, or a weight issue, these activities can have an even worse impact on our bodies. To be sure, the things we used to do as children without giving them a second thought now seem to have a punishing effect on us.

Dogs feel the same way and cope with many of the same issues. The problem for them is that they are often expected to continue jumping onto beds, furniture, or into cars long after their joints protest. As a result, it's not uncommon for our canine companions to pull muscles or suffer lasting discomfort.

Fortunately, we can provide our pooches with relief by investing in a high-quality dog ramp. Below, we'll describe how they're used and explain what you should look for when shopping for one.

How They're Used

During each day, your canine will likely jump onto your couch, bed, and other furniture several times. Plus, if you regularly take him with you on the road, he'll be expected to jump into your vehicle. Over time, that constant jumping can have a severe impact on his joints.

Also, consider that many breeds are smaller; making those jumps is much harder on their bones and can eventually lead to painful arthritis. And for dogs that are older or suffer from a variety of health issues, making the jumps is nearly impossible without injuring themselves in the process.

A ramp removes the need to jump. They can transform painful climbs into a gentle slope that your pooch can navigate at his own pace. Plus, there's no need to leave your canine's joints and bones vulnerable to constant pounding when he jumps off your furniture. A ramp lets him descend easily protecting his joints from harm.

Factors To Consider When Shopping

The three main considerations when buying a dog ramp are strength, portability, and safety. First, it must have the strength to support your pooch's weight. Some models are designed for small breeds while others are built for larger breeds. The packaging will provide the ramp's weight capacity, so be sure to look for it.

Second, choose a model that is portable. Chances are, you'll want to enjoy the flexibility of transporting it easily from one room to another, or to your vehicle. It should have a handle and fold easily for storage.

Third, look for features that help ensure the safety of your canine. For example, a lot of models come with side rails, an anti-skidding feature, and stabilizing latches. Some even have an extra traction feature that prevents a nasty slip from happening during wet weather.

A dog ramp can make life far more comfortable for your pooch. Not only will it protect his joints from discomfort and pain, but it can also help prevent unexpected injuries from poorly-planned jumps. - 20511

Pet Urns - Selecting The Right One

Pet Urns - Selecting The Right One

by Pete Stone

Pet urns can be the best way to remember and honor the loss of your pet. You can often find them at a veterinarians office, a pet funeral home some specialized pet stores and online. With such a large selection available of pet cremation urns it can be difficult picking the perfect one to remember and honor your pet. With all the materials, styles and colors available it can be difficult making the perfect choice.

The loss of a pet can be traumatic to say the least and making a decision for burial, cremation or having a funeral can be stressful but having a pet memorial or pet urn to house keepsakes, photos or tags can often help with the loss. Pet urns com in many different shapes and styles and are often used for either burial or display in the house or garden. The more popular materials usually involve ceramic, metal, stone or wood or a combination of the materials. Ones made of metal will are often from bronze, brass or copper. Wood urns are often made from hardwood but can be made from pine. Ceramics are usually molded into vases or sometimes figurines.

The material of you pet urn will also determine where you may place it. You should decide in advance where you intend on placing or displaying your urn. If you place it in the elements or outside consider metal or stone if it is to be displayed indoors consider one made of wood or ceramics. Placing a metal urn outdoors will likely make it tarnish much faster regardless of the metal and will show signs within weeks. You could also consider cleaning it on a regular schedule with the appropriate cleaner. Consider trying to seal the surface with an acrylic floor wax. You can do this by wiping very slowly a sponge that has the wax poured on it this way you can avoid sightly air bubbles that may appear on the surface. The wax will not last forever but usually holds up for several months.

Another common type of urn is a pet photo urn. Often made of one of the mentioned materials it will often have a placeholder for your pets photo including a holder for a metal plaque that you can have you pets name engraved on with a few loving words. In some cases the a photo of your pet and a few lines of kindness can be laser engraved onto the surface of the pet urn. This is often done on stone or wood surfaces.

Consider stone or metal for a lasting burial urn. Many people often plant a small shrub or plant over the area to designate it as a pet memorial. You could also use yard ornaments or concrete statues to mark off the area as a dedicated pet memorial.

You may have recently lost your dog, cat, rabbit, bird or another friend from the animal kingdom regardless of how you shop for pet urns you have many options to choose from and when buying online you often have a much larger selection that if you buy veterinarians office, or a pet crematorium pet funeral home. When you buy a pet urn online you will often save a lot of money and buy something much nicer in honor of your pet. - 20511

How To Remove Ticks On Dogs

How To Remove Ticks On Dogs

by Moses Wright

It is important for a dog owner to know how to remove ticks on dogs. The small parasitic insects known as dog ticks can carry and transmit disease.

Tick infestations are common in grassy and wooded areas. Ticks seek potential hosts by sensing body heat, scent, and the carbon dioxide the host exhales.

Dog ticks can carry numerous diseases, but they cannot transmit Lyme disease to their hosts. Even though people associate Lyme disease with tick bites, only certain ticks can transmit Lyme disease. Deer ticks can transmit Lyme disease, but dog ticks cannot.

When the dog has been outside especially in grassy or wooded areas, the dog owner should inspect the dog for ticks. If the tick is found, a tick should be carefully removed as soon as possible.

Because part of the tick could break off and remain in the dog's skin, the removal of a tick must be done carefully. The dog is at risk of infection and acquiring diseases if the head of the tick remains embedded in the dog's skin.

Striking a match, blowing out, and holding the hot matchstick against a tick is a common method for removing a tick. However, this method can cause the tick to vomit in the dog which can cause the transmission of disease from the tick.

People often think that ticks should be removed by covering the tick with vegetable oil. This too can cause the tick to vomit into the wound.

Using a tweezers is usually considered the best way to remove a tick. The dog owner should attempt to pull the tick from the tick's head which means that the tweezers has to be placed extremely close to the dog's skin.

By getting as close to dog's skin, the dog owner may be able to prevent the tick's head from being left inside the dog's skin. If the ticks head remains in the skin, the dog owner may be able to remove it with tweezers.

Scraping the tick bite with a credit card is another method for removing the ticks head from the dog's skin. The dog owner should take the dog to the veterinarian if the dog owner cannot get the tick's head out of the dog's skin. - 20511

Saving Money with Discount Dog Toys

Saving Money with Discount Dog Toys

by Kim Fleming

When it comes to choose toys for your dog, expensive is not always the best. If you are a start purchaser, discounter dog toys can equally entertain your pet while save you money in the mean time. As a dog owner and lover, you may like to check out how to shop at a lower price without sacrificing your dog's fun.

Dog Toys

Dogs are naturally playful, and therefore giving toys to you dog is a great way to show your love. But dog toys do more than just providing fun. They can channel your dog's energies away from unwanted behavior. Toys also provide a lot of physical and mental exercise. Best of all, dogs get to form loving connections with their masters when they play together with toys.

Dogs of All Kinds

Before you buy any dog toys, you should first remember that not all toys are good for all dogs. The size, texture and style of the toy should fit the size, age, breed and temperament of your pet. There are different ways for you to find out which toys are appropriate. You can trust the toy package label or the opinion of the sales clerk at the toy shop. You can also ask a veterinarian or a dog expert for his opinion.

If you make your purchase online, be sure you examine the descriptions carefully before you pay for any toy. Some reputable online stores will be so helpful as to provide you with comprehensive information on dog toys for specific dogs. You can also look into dedicated online sites that focus solely on dogs.

Discount Dog Toys

Somehow, it makes sense to shop for discount dog toys first instead of immediately settling for expensive kinds. This is because all dogs are unique. There is no guarantee that your dog will love a toy that other dogs go crazy over. You can get stuck with an expensive item that your dog will not even look at. Discounted toys are a great way to find out what your dog likes without blowing your money.

Some dog owners have no trust for discount dog toys, thinking that they are of a lower-quality or that they are second hand products. Some stores and online sites that offer discounts have low prices because they buy directly from factories and sell very close to the factory price. Some stores might also sell low because they are having a clearance sale.

Shopping Online

If you usually do your shopping online, make sure that you buy from a reputable store, preferably one that is solely engaged in selling dog toys. You can check out a store's reputation by checking customer feedback from forums and review sites.

Like their offline counterparts, online stores usually offer a wide range of toy choices. As a general rule, you should get a handful of various toys that you can rotate on different days of the week. This can help keep your dog interested in playing. Having a wide range of merchandise will also increase the chances that you will find just the right items for your dog.

If selected with care, you may find that most discount dog toys are just as good as the more expensive ones. They are such good bargains that you can hardly pass by. Just be sure to have in mind your dog's safety and best interests. - 20511

Hazards of Dog Fleas In The Dog Park

Hazards of Dog Fleas In The Dog Park

by Jane A Moore

My dog and I have a great weekend schedule. First thing each weekend morning we get up, have a snack, grab a latte at the coffee shop on the way, and end up at the dog park. I just love bringing my dog to the park, since it's pretty obvious that this is one of the highlights of his week.

We both enjoy our weekend routine - my dog gets lots of exercise and socialization, and I enjoy my coffee and do some socialization of my own. It's a great break for both of us. Unfortunately there are several times during the year that it seems inevitable that my dog would come home with fleas. I wouldn't really notice at the time, but through the week I'd notice some scratching, and think 'oh no, fleas again'.

Having fleas on my dog, and then in my house is not a very pleasant experience for either of us. My dog scratches constantly, and I spend entire weekends vacuuming, laundering to try and get rid of flea infestations, rather than enjoying our time at the dog park. So park visits were put on hold, rather than risk bringing home a new batch of fleas. After several weeks of missing the park, I decided there had to be better way. I needed to find out how to repel fleas, rather than avoid the weekend outings that my dog and I were both missing.

There was a little trepidation that came with my decision to go back to the dog park, so I decided to try and figure out some sort of natural flea repellant so we would avoid picking up fleas at the park. I talked to my dogs groomer, and she had some great suggestions. Two of the best natural flea treatments are garlic and citronella. I decided to try them both to double up on my dogs flea resistant powers.

I started to feed my dog a wee bit of garlic with his wet food every morning. The groomer told me that in a matter of days the garlic will start to be emitted through my dogs skin and saliva. The smell is imperceptible to humans but acts as a significant flea deterrent. She was right. At least, I have not noticed any fleas after going to the dog park. As an added precaution, I dosed a bandanna in some citronella oil and tied it around my dog's neck. My dog doesn't seem to mind the smell and it helps to repel fleas.

Now we are both back to enjoying our regular weekend routine at the dog park, without fear of picking up fleas and bringing them back home. I'm happy to have found a natural flea repellent, and I know my dog is just happy that she gets to go out play with all her friends every weekend again, even if they might have fleas. - 20511

What Is The Importance Of Insulating Your Dog's House?

What Is The Importance Of Insulating Your Dog's House?

by Moses Wright

Some climates necessitate appropriate insulation in accessories for the doghouse. In extremely cold weather or in high temperatures, not insulating a doghouse could jeopardize the health and safety of the dog.

The typical extreme weather for summer and winter months for that area determines the importance of insulating your dog's house. In regions of the world where there are extremely cold temperatures in winter or extremely high temperatures in summer, and insulated doghouse may not be enough protection for the dog.

Some premade doghouses are insulated. A doghouse kit or a customized, homemade doghouse can be insulated.

Different forms of insulation are used in doghouses. Polystyrene foam or are Styrofoam sheets may be used between the interior and exterior surfaces of the doghouse walls, and roof, and floor. Sometimes, the interior of the doghouse is lined with insulated panels.

The insulation helps the doghouse from becoming too hot or too cold. The insulation blocks some of the heat in summer. The insulation holds in the dog's body temperature which helps keep the inside of the doghouse warmer during the winter.

If the dog owner is buying insulated doghouse, the dog owner may want to question whether the doghouse has an insulated roof and floor, or if just the walls are insulated. The dog owner may want to ask what insulating material the doghouse contains and whether it requires any maintenance.

It is best for a dog that is going to be kept outdoors to begin to adjust to being outdoors from the time it is puppy. Dogs that have not been outdoors may have difficulty adjusting to the weather and other factors like boredom and a lack of social interaction.

Some dog breeds do well outdoors in temperatures that are similar to the areas where the dog breed originated. For example, a dog with a thick coat may tolerate colder temperatures then a dog with a short coat. However, the dog with thick coat may not be able to adjust the summer heat.

An insulated doghouse used in the winter needs to be the appropriate size for the dog. The insulated doghouse is heated by the dog's body temperature, therefore if the doghouse is too large, the space cannot be heated sufficiently by the dog's body temperature.

There are a few options for doghouses that are to be used during times of extreme temperatures. Heating pads and heating and cooling units are becoming common doghouse accessories.

Besides extreme temperatures, other effects of being outdoors for long periods of time can be detrimental to the dog. A dog that has kept outdoors can become aggressive due to the lack of socialization. - 20511

A Happy Dog Will Live and Love Longer

A Happy Dog Will Live and Love Longer

by Tornoe Rose

Having pets is not an easy chore. You have a lot of duties to accomplish so that they can mature into well-bred animals in the later years. These duties include gratifying their basic requirements as well as their caprices. From their chow to their protection, from their grooming to their well-being necessities, all these tasks will be yours to shoulder the instant you have possession of your adorable canine. It is not that dissimilar from being a mom or dad to a human infant.

Dogs rank high on the list of the most wanted pet in the record of mankind. They are faithful, effortless to train, highly intelligent and fun to be with. Whether you like guard dogs like German shepherd or pit bulls, toy dogs like poodle or Chihuahua, sport dogs like Dalmatian and St. Bernard, you will surely be having the moment of your life if you spent it with these brilliant creatures.

If you think your dog can offer numerous advantages in your life, doesn't it follow that you should also do everything possible to keep them in an ecstatic state? It's the least you can do for all the fun moments that they have shared with you. Here are some cool ways to make your canine happy. Read on.

The primary thing that you ought to do to maintain your dog in a state of heaven is to supply it with the obligatory food, water, exercise, dog house and a regular visit to the affable neighborhood veterinarian. Make sure that you are presenting them with nutrients that are suitable for their breed and age. Larger dogs require more calories and protein than their tinier counterparts. In a similar approach, puppies have somewhat different nutritional requirements than their adult counterparts. Dogs with deep and feathery coat also need supplementary zinc and other minerals compared to those with thinner and finer hair.

A regular workout schedule is also important for your four-legged friend. Walking them in the park or playing Frisbee with them three times a week for a minimum of at least 30 minutes per session is enough to give their cardiovascular system a good exercise. This will thwart the possibility of them getting fat or developing problems like an atherosclerotic heart.

A refuge is necessary to protect them from the extremes of the temperature. It will also act as their protection during windy days.

Visiting the local vet will also guarantee that they are in tiptop shape. Be cognizant of their needed vaccinations. Shots against rabies and Parvo virus must be ticked off in their medical record. Pay attention to your vet's recommendation if he wants added immunizations because they are responsive that each dog breed has varying needs.

You may also give them a treat once in a while by giving them pampering sessions in a dog spa. Bubbly shower baths nail clipping, fur trimming, tooth brushing and other related services will make your pet dog feel so loved. Consequently, these hygienic activities will also help banish the pesky fleas that might have invaded their sensitive skin.

Enjoy your bonding escapades with your pooch. Aside from your other cuddling moments during your exercise activities, make time to play with him as soon as you get home from your office work. You may also try talking to him like you would any normal person. Studies show that relating with animals decrease the harmful stress hormone cortisol in the body. Therefore, this task will then give long-term benefits to both of you.

Lastly, dog-proof your home so that accidents can be avoided or at the very least, minimized. Make sure all electrical appliances are kept or installed in safe places. Be meticulous about dangling wires and sharp or heavy kitchen tools and utensils spread just about anywhere. Place your things in their proper locations so that your pet dog won't trip on it. - 20511

Who Else Wants a Healthier Pet?

Who Else Wants a Healthier Pet?

by Skibber Labskovs

When you own a pet you take on the responsibility for their lives. So many factors play into your pet being healthy. You have probably had a sick pet at some time your life, and you know how that can tug at your heart. I have had a sick dog so I know it feels, I could only thinks about getting her well. Does your pet need to be healthier?

Make sure to feed your pet good nutritionally balanced food. Also be sure the food is made special for them. Your pet's food is specifically made to have all the nutrients their body needs for their health. No matter if the pet is a hamster or a cat, they require specifically designed food for their bodies.

Only feed them people food if the vet says you can and only what the vet says. Caffeine is not good for dogs so they need to stay away from it. It can affect a dog's heart to the extent of a heart attack. A dog doesn't need to eat sugar either.

Animals can get overweight if fed too much too. This is why feeding dogs and cats table scraps is frowned on. You can kill fish by overfeeding them. Just like people, pets can be made unhealthy by eating too many calories. Make sure that when your pet consumes water that they have sufficient water daily to be hydrated. If your pet happens to be fish in an aquarium, make sure their water is clean and clear for them. This water needs daily watching for different problems.

Be on time with your pet's annual checkup with the vet if this is relevant to your pet's health. Cats and dogs both need periodic vaccines to keep from contracting certain diseases. Rabies vaccine is especially important to them. This is even more important if you live in a location where your pets can come in contact with wild creatures.

Pets in general need exercise just as much as people do. Fish get what exercise they need easily because they have to swim to survive. Cats and dogs need to be played with, ran, or walked to be positive that they are exercised enough. Exercise will insure that your pet has good muscle tone and it will also keep their weight at the right spot. And as with people their hearts will be healthier too. Walk your dog or cat when you go get your exercise walking. This is a fun way of both you and your pet staying healthy. If you have a hamster for the family pet then it needs to have a wheel to play on. These are the ways for exercising your pet correctly.

Our pets need our undivided attention and love to be fully healthy. We should show our pets that they are love through petting them and/or talking to them. Grooming is just another show of affection as far as they are concerned. Cats and dogs either get matted coats or shed their hair too much if not brushed enough.

Following the above suggestions will help you have the healthiest pet you can have. Is this not what all of us pet owners want? So have a healthier pet today! - 20511

Being a pet owner is great. But there are two things that you need to know about. An important key is (http://www.petinsurancepro.com/) quality pet health insurance because unless you have it your pet is not safe. The second is that (http://www.petinsurancepro.com/cheap-pet-meds-be-careful-or-get-pet-insurance/) using cheap pet meds will damage your pet terminally if you find the wrong quality of medication.

The Owner's Guide To Playing Dogs

The Owner's Guide To Playing Dogs

by Ronald Jamison

When left to their own devices, dogs love to engage each other in a bout of playing. To the uninitiated owner who observes the interaction, the behavior can seem cute, odd, and even worrisome if things seem to be getting too rough. The fact is, canines enjoy this type of contact with each other and rarely does the contact get out of hand. In a way, it is a social dance they perform with one another from the time they are puppies through adulthood.

Below, we'll explore why canines play with each other. You'll learn about their motivations and triggers as well as the types of play in which they engage.

Understanding The Motivations

Many types of pack animals play with others within their group when they're young. However, once they reach adulthood, they usually stop. Dogs are different. For some reason, they never lose their juvenile tendencies. Even well into adulthood, assuming they are not prevented by an illness or other health issue, canines will continue playing with one another.

Veterinarians suggest that one of the reasons canines interact in this manner is because they are rehearsing their roles as adults. For example, you might observe puppies wrestling over resources or with each other - behavior that may be necessary later in their lives. You will also see them biting or humping.

Another motivation is a simple desire to engage their mind and body. Your pooch needs mental stimulation and exercise in order to remain happy and healthy. Playing with another dog provides a perfect outlet.

Social Interaction

Just as young people must learn to interact with each other without exceeding acceptable social limits, canines must also learn proper social skills. This type of playing occurs most frequently when they are puppies. They'll jump on one another, chewing and biting playfully. If one of the "players" goes too far (for example, bites too hard), the other will let him know. This is how they learn what is acceptable and what is not.

Sexual Interaction

When dogs play sexually, their interaction usually manifests as mounting. Studies have shown that if a pooch reaches adulthood without having had sufficient mounting experience, his initial attempts at mating can often prove unsuccessful. When there is no play partner present, dogs will mount furniture or even a person's legs. The latter complicates the relationship between an owner and his pooch because the act of mounting is a dominant one.

Being A Predator

Canines are, by nature, predatory pack animals; certain characteristics are imprinted upon their brains. These characteristics manifest during play through chasing balls, sticks, and other objects. You'll often see dogs jumping and pinning things that are moving only to release them before attempting to pin them again. They are sharpening their predatory skills in a playful environment.

Your dog has a playful streak that is nearly impossible to suppress. As an owner, try to provide him with an environment that gives him the opportunity to enjoy himself, build his skills, and interact with playmates. - 20511

How To Instruct Your Dog When It Comes to Tricks

How To Instruct Your Dog When It Comes to Tricks

by Stewart Staubber

Dogs are amazing creatures in that they conform to their owner's desires in almost all cases. You would be amazed at the things a dog will do to please their owner, especially when there is some sort of treat involved when all is said and done. There are things that they do as a matter of course, and those are the things that you're going to want to use while you train them to do tricks. If you combine these methods with treats, then you'll find that it's a lot easier to do the training.

Watch what your dog does for fun. Does he leap into the air pursuing butterflies? Does he like to turn in circles chasing his tail? If some kind of natural behavior can be turned into an enjoyable trick, that will streamline the training process. Be in readiness to use a consistent hand sign and verbal command when this behavior is displayed and then follow up with an immediate reward.

Some dogs have weight or diet concerns so don't go overboard with the food treats. Utilizing treats may be a reasonable way to get started and to galvanize your dog's attention and focus but in the long run you want your dog reacting and executing tricks based on vocal instructions, hand signs, and praise for a well done trick. Once the appropriate signal-command/reaction-trick associations are ingrained and habitual the use of treats can be limited or completely stopped.

Most dogs don't take very long to get the hang of it because they recognize quickly that when they do the trick they get the treat. This makes the training pretty simple, and you can use simple commands as a gateway to other tricks. One example might be using the command 'down' instead of 'play dead'. This will be a good starting point, and eventually you can move on to 'play dead'. 'stay', 'come', and 'sit' will also come naturally to the dog once a little bit of practice is done.

Another way to get your dog to pay close attention while you are trying to perfect tricks is to use their favorite toy. You can dangle this close to your dog's nose and say 'jump'. It may take a few minutes, but the dog will soon realize that the word 'jump' means...well...jump. After a while you won't even need the toy.

Your dog's ability to smell is a huge factor in the training. One thing that you can do is play a little game with your dog that involves hiding a favorite toy or treat and then having them find it. You can start out by putting the toy in a close location so that it's easy for them to find the object, and when they become more adept at that you can hide it farther away so that they have to work for it. After a while you will be able to use this as a viable trick to entertain your dog as well as any guests that you might have.

Do you want your dog to "high five" you? The best way to teach this trick is to use your dog's attachment to you as his owner and perchance his automatic behavior of presenting you his paw. You can stimulate this by getting down on your knees in front of your dog, offering your "paw" and giving the command "shake", "high five", "give me five", "five", or whichever command you decide to adopt. When he responds correctly, reward him with praise or a treat. He will rapidly get the idea.

The dog will usually have no hesitation to hand you their paw, and because of this you will sometimes be able to do the trick without saying anything. Sometimes you might actually have to lift their paw up for them, and even if this is the case then you'll still need to give the dog some praise so that they'll be willing to do it on their own next time.

When a trick has been taught it's not difficult to extend it. "Give me five" can smoothly be expanded into "sit up" by slowly elevating the paw so that the other foot will automatically lift up. By then grasping both paws so that the dog is in a "sit up" position, verbalizing the command and supporting the proper reaction with praise or a treat, he will, with repetition, connect the dots.

Needless to say there are many particular types of training. A lot of it is for behavior control, safety, proper social behavior, etc. Developing tricks is for you and your dog's amusement, recreation, and to help invigorate the relationship between you. - 20511

The German Shepherd: Power, Loyalty and Cleverness all in One

The German Shepherd: Power, Loyalty and Cleverness all in One

by Troy Richardson

If you ever chance upon one of these dogs, youll probably notice its stately demeanor right away. It gives off an air of sleekness and fluid power, while retaining a lively and vigorous outlook on life. The German Shepherd has a long body, that is solid and healthy, radiating health and top form.

When you look upon one of the members of this breed, you are struck right away by their noble demeanor. The German Shepherd is a coolly aloof dog, exuding subtle confidence and poise, and does not make friends with strangers easily. It is straightforward and bold, but is known for its disciplined nature.

However, as soon as the dog learns to trust his owners and a establishes a firm relationship with them, the German Shepherd is quite loving toward children. He is a superb guard and a loyal family pet, which is usually what many families are looking for. A German Shepherd possesses strength, devotedness, and is the third-smartest dog in the world: Id say thats a perfect choice for you!

The breed was named Deutscher Schferhund, literally translating to "German Shepherd Dog". It was named for its original purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. They were bred to preserve traits that assisted in their job of heading sheep and protecting flocks from predators, as this was practical in Germanys local communities, during the 1800s.

Dogs believed to have the traits necessary for herding sheep, like brawn, brains and a good nose would be selected and bred by shepherds. The end resulted in dogs that executed their duties superbly, but varied in outward appearance and skill, depending where they came from and were bred. This was an accepted practice back in the 1800s, in Germanys local communities.

German Shepherds are marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. Because of these characteristics that make for a loyal protector and herder, it is also hailed as the worlds leading police, guard and military dog. Not only that, its a loving family companion, herder and show competitor.

The German Shepherd is famous for being a working dog, especially when it comes to tracking down criminals, holding apprehended suspects, and patrols. Theyre also excellent noses, sniffing out narcotics and explosives and aiding in search and rescue missions. Their keen sense of smell and ability to focus regardless of distractions, such as in port hangars or busy shopping districts, sets this dog apart from other animals.

With his tan and black or red and black coat and his dignified stance and bearing, the German Shepherds countenance is intelligent, keen and composed. They have a splendid outer coat that is close and dense, while their undercoat is thick and their tails are bushy, reaching to the hock. With this dog conveying understated strength and toughness, and being one of the smartest, most agile and hardest-working dogs out there, youd do well adopt a German Shepherd now and make the best choice for gaining both a protector and a friend. - 20511

Cure Your Dogs Biting Problem

Cure Your Dogs Biting Problem

by The Willy Brothers

No dog owner likes to manage a dog that has a biting problem. Many breeds of dogs, big and small, Pitt Bulls and Rottweiler most prominent among them, have reportedly attacked children or other dogs, or chased a delivery boy who had to walk into the house. Though the reported cases may be extreme ones, getting bitten by a dog is not something unheard of. The onus is upon the dog owner to take sufficient preventive measures to forestall the problem before the dog actually bites someone.

A dog should be initiated into the anti-biting program early enough, when it is only a puppy and the best way to do it is by making it mingle with better behaved dogs. Those dogs will train it in their own way, and will also guide you in training it. Though biting is instinctive in the case of dogs, you have to instill into your dog early enough that biting cannot be tolerated, and that is the only way in which you can become the proud owner of a dog that does not bite.

Since most pups are taken away from their mother and siblings after only their second month of life, it is very important that you take on the mother roll. Dogs learn the majority of their behavior during the first four months of life, which is why rescue dogs and dogs that come from puppy mills are more prone to biting than dogs whom come from responsible and respected breeders.

Puppy mills are often horrific places where dogs are kept in cramped overpopulated pens, by owners who could care less about their mental well being so long as the puppies fetch them a profit. Pups which come from such conditions are basically wild with major emotional, mental, behavioral, and sometimes health issues. These dogs have never been exposed to proper etiquette and simply dont know any better.

Even those, who own a rescue dog that easily bites others, can train the dog to give up its biting habit. It is definitely easier to train a young dog, but that does not mean that it is not possible to train an adult dog to be rid of its tendency to bite.

The method of training a big dog is not all that different from training a young one, the only requirement being that it should be done a little mildly. If a grown dog has biting tendencies, it cannot be left unleashed among other dogs, hoping that it would get trained the natural way, taking the cue from the other dogs; nor can it be allowed to roam free in a playground if it has a tendency to bite children. That will just be sticking your neck out to be caught in a lawsuit.

The dog has to be trained in a phased manner, by being taken around a dog park so that it becomes familiar with the other dogs, and then slowly bringing it into closer contact with them. Perseverance and determination are what sets the tone for succeeding in ridding a dog of this unwelcome habit. - 20511

3. When it comes to obedience training for dogs it is important that not only they are sociable but also that they are happy and outgoing. This way you will find your dog will be much happier to obey the commands that you give to them.

4. Work with the dogs natural instincts, this will make obedience training a lot easier and also you will again your dogs respect quicker.

Below you will see some of the main rules for getting your dog to obey and understand your commands within the quickest time period.

Rule 1. Reward your dog if they succeed in a task or command that you have set. At first they might take a while to learn as their attention span is not as good a humans.

Rule 2. As time goes on, your dog will start to pick up your commands and have a greater attention span. This takes time so repeat everything again and again.

Rule 3. Dogs need to know whats acceptable and what is not, by letting your dog know the difference between right and wrong from the start they will pick up commands a lot quicker. Giving your dog feedback will also make them respect you a lot more.

Rule 4. Be realistic when teaching new obedience skills not all dogs are the same, some are going to take longer to pick up the commands. What you should never do is punish your dog if they are wrong in the initial stages.

Rule 5. Teaching your dog new commands if meant to be fun so keep it like that. If the dog seems to become bored they will start to lose attention.

Rule 7. Its important that you incorporate the obedience training into the dogs everyday life and not just in training sessions. This will allow your dog to learn at a faster rate, as an example " when feeding your dog make them sit and wait before you give them their food.

Rule 8. You should never attempt to correct your dog if they are not in the wrong. It is important that if your dog does wrong then correct them by grabbing their attention. If you do not correct them immediately and leave it, this may leave your dog feeling somewhat confused and will not understand why it has happened.

Rule 9. Finally, when it comes to obedience training look for those things that will help to motivate your dog during the sessions. Find out the kinds of treats that they love and use these as an incentive that they will be given when a command is done correctly!

Rule 10. After time and a lot of practice your dog will soon become very obedient and will obey your commends. If you do find it all a little difficult there are loads of training classes in your local area! - 20511

Why Pet Doors Are Good For Both Pets And People

Why Pet Doors Are Good For Both Pets And People

by Bill Johns

Indoor pet owners already know how much our little friends depend on us. It can be extremely stressful to both you and your pet if you work outside the home and have to leave your pet home alone for long periods of time. Think about it, what if you couldn't relieve yourself for eight to ten hour stretches.

We all love our pets. But we both know that sometimes they can get under our skin. Think about all the times you've been home trying to get something accomplished when your pet is persistent in trying to get you to let him out. It's can be a hassle to stop what you're doing and take him outside.

Did you know their is a simple solution to these problems? Yes, it's a pet door. More freedom for you. More freedom for your pet. Pet doors eliminate these problems and more. No more coming home to clean up after your pet. No more interruptions while fixing dinner.

Pet doors are relatively easy to install but you must follow directions and be handy with tools. You can always have a handyman do the installation fairly cheaply.

Do your research before deciding on a pet door as there are many varieties on the market. You will need to determine which type is best for your pet. Also it's a good idea to know how big your pet will be when fully grown because you will need a door that your pet can go through easily.

While looking for your new pet door keep in mind how difficult it will be to install as some are more difficult than others. In any event you may just want to ask for the help of a neighbor or friend or the services of a handyman.

As with most everything pet doors are designed to fit individual needs and desires. Your final decision should take your own needs into consideration. While doing my homework I found the electronic pet door offered many advantages other types just couldn't match.

Some pet doors do not allow for the safety and security of an electronic pet door. With the latter the door is sealed except when your pet needs to go in or out. Thus strays and other undesirables are kept out saving you a lot of headache should a squirrel or possum get in. Because it is tightly sealed it also saves energy consumption.

After your pet learns to use the pet door, both you and he can enjoy the many benefits your new found freedom brings. - 20511

Aggressive Dog Behavior Training: Stopping the Danger and Enjoying Your Dog

Aggressive Dog Behavior Training: Stopping the Danger and Enjoying Your Dog

by Tara Tisdale

If you are reading material about aggressive dog behavior training, chances are good that you are concerned that your dog is exhibiting some undesirable behaviors. It can be really hard when you love a dog, but they are becoming more aggressive.

Most likely, you have some serious mixed feelings. You certainly do not want a dangerous animal in your home, but you also care about this dog and want to keep it. This is made more concerning if you have kids or other pets. You do not want to put them in danger.

The main thing to remember when you are trying to stop dog aggression is that you must get expert advice. Trying to handle an aggressive dog is not something you should try alone.

There are so many reasons that a dog can become aggressive. It could be part of that dog's breed. It could also be because the dog was abused at some time in the past. The dog may also be acting out of protection in some way.

Often, the dog shows aggression as a way to dominate other dogs. Remember that a dog is a pack animal which means they must show who is the pack leader.

There are several ways to implement aggressive dog behavior training. The first thing to do is to see your veterinarian. There can be medical reasons why a dog is acting aggressively.

Second, you may want to think about spaying or neutering your dog. This is a safe procedure that may reduce the aggressiveness, especially in a male dog.

The best way to overcome aggressive dog behavior is to use a professional dog training program that is geared to help with this issue. We are not talking about training your dog to fetch or grab a beer from the fridge. We are talking about correcting and overcoming aggression. - 20511

Dog Destructive Chewing: Stopping Your Dog From Chewing Everything

Dog Destructive Chewing: Stopping Your Dog From Chewing Everything

by Tara Tisdale

Dog destructive chewing seems to vary among dogs. Some absolutely love to chew on everything and anything. Some dogs could care less.

Here are three top reasons why some doggies love to chew:

* Dogs have an ingrained desire to chew, most especially if it is a good tasting bone. However, there are also dogs that will chew up anything from a chair leg to a telephone cord! * Chewing does help nervous doggies to calm down. * Dogs who do not get enough exercise may chew to get rid of that extra energy.

So how do you stop destructive chewing?

1. You must dog proof your surroundings like you would with a toddler roaming around. Make sure you put your stuff away where the dog cannot reach it. Do not leave food or other temptations lying around.

2. Refrain from giving your dog your old personal items to chew on as this only serves to confuse the dog. They will not understand what is off limits.

3. Provide your doggie with other appropriate items to chew such as bones and toys. Make these things available so that your dog will begin to associate them as her own.

4. Make sure you are spending time supervising your dog. This way you can correct your dog anytime she is trying to chew something that is not a dog friendly item.

5. Come up with a sound (clapping, for example) that you can use when you catch your dog chewing on something bad. Do not spank or yell, as this will just scare the dog and lose the lesson of the moment. Instead, have a spray bottle with water or clap to let the dog know that this is a wrong action.

Above all, be patient and love your dog. You can take care of dog destructive chewing if you spend time doing the right things. - 20511

Motorcycle Dog Carriers And Protective Gear

Motorcycle Dog Carriers And Protective Gear

by Moses Wright

Motorcycle dog carriers and other types of protective gear for dogs are designed to allow dog owners who ride motorcycles to ride with their dogs. Dog helmets and goggles are examples of other types of protective gear for motorcycle-riding dogs.

If a dog owner rides a motorcycle with the dog without protection, the dog has a considerable risk of injury. While motorcycle safety gear for dogs does not totally prevent all injury, using protective gear can reduce the risk of injury.

Motorcycle dog carriers come in different styles and sizes. One example of a motorcycle dog carrier is a saddlebag style which is suitable for small dogs. The saddlebag motorcycle dog carriers are mounted on the side of the bike.

There are different types of motorcycle dog carriers that are mounted on the rear or passenger's seat of the bike. There are different styles of motorcycle dog carriers that are mounted to the rear of the bike. Some of these carriers look similar to rounded dog cages with openings for the dogs to be able to stick out their head.

A motorcycle dog carrier tank pad straps to the top of the gas tank of the motorcycle. This allows small dogs to be seated in front of the driver. He motorcycle dog carrier tank pads have a chain to secure the collar of the dog for the dog safety.

A dog carrier that secures to the passenger seat of the motorcycle is another option. Some of these motorcycle dog carriers resemble small, rigid dog beds.

Dog helmets are sturdy, small helmets that fit on a dog's head. The dog helmets secures to the dog's head with a chin strap.

Dog goggles can be adjustable where custom made for the best fit. Dog goggles offer protection for the dog's eyes.

Leather biker jackets and other dog costumes are popular on the Internet. The dog owner should remember that these dog costumes do not necessarily protect the dog, but are for the entertainment of the dog owner. - 20511

Labrador Retriever: A Sweet and Gentle Disposition; Excellent and Efficient Skills and Talents

Labrador Retriever: A Sweet and Gentle Disposition; Excellent and Efficient Skills and Talents

by Troy Richardson

Labrador Retriever is a pet name popular all over the world particularly in North America. When you have seen this breed, you will agree with the descriptions: genuinely kind-hearted, affable, family-friendly, reliable and clearly sharp in intellect. They are unquestionably lovable creatures and in fact, the American Kennel Club hailed them as the US's most famous pet.

Originally from the icy territories of Canada specifically Newfoundland, these useful and lovable gentle dogs spread in fame at places such as North America and the world all over. Before their present fame, however, going back to Newfoundland, they were great companions to fishermen and game hunters in the region. This breed tagged along side the fishermen to haul in fishing nets and captures back the jerking fishes that are trying to escape the perils of the nets; with hunters, they swam freezing lakes and other bodies of water to retrieve the game quickly and efficiently.

Today, the Lab is not merely limited to the hunting job anymore because even inside the homes of delicate and active families, they are welcomed, sheltered, and hailed as a magnificent pet. Labs perfectly epitomizes the loving and fun pet image of almost every family for they are playful, energetic, stable- tempered, affectionate, naturally sweet and eager to please. With friends, strangers, and other animals; they are equably friendly and will interact harmoniously.

This breed is kind-hearted, amiable, and very easy to train; their sweet disposition makes them supremely lovable and you won't be able to help but make them your favorite. They have an excellent level of intelligence and have an affectionate heart that allows them to be naturally tractable making them inarguable in obedience and reliability. It doesn't matter whether you tag this breed along in hunting, at play, or at competitions; you can always expect them to be docile and very capable and this has been proven by thousands of Labrador Retriever owners all over the world to be true.

The standard and only acceptable colors of Labrador Retriever are yellow, chocolate and black; any other color or combinations of the primary color is tagged for penalty by various kennel groups. Touching the fur, it would feel a bit hard or course as it is dense with short and thick inner and outer coats. This system of coat protects the Lab from harsh weathers and water temperatures and in fact, the coat is weather-proof and water-resistant; through this coating the Lab has been able to survive the conditions of Newfoundland.

As playmates to children, Labs make the perfect candidate for they are naturally fond of playing, running, are affectionate, kind, and friendly. Inside the house, this breed is a qualified watchdog and loyal companion; guarding tasks are not suited for them for they tend to be constantly friendly and welcoming to strangers and other dogs. In the outdoors during hunting, they are inherently retrievers meaning; they are quick, agile, have a high endurance, intelligent, and an excellent swimmer.

Today, however, because of the discovered trainable skills and excellent temperament of the Labs, they are taken from the four walls of the house and transferred to do a much important and socially meaningful task; these tasks go way past the popular obedience competitions and hunting expeditions. Outside the home, the Labs are equally efficient in police work, narcotics detection, and guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, and carting.

Every pet, no matter how docile or stubborn they are, needs an effective master in order for them to be the best that they can be. As for the Labs, a steady and firm hand that teaches and guides them are what it takes so they can be trained and honed to be better pets. The owner then, having a great pet such as the Lab must possess the qualities of a good leader and by saying so he must take control over the life and activities of the Labrador Retriever. - 20511

Secrets to Stopping a Dog's Barking

Secrets to Stopping a Dog's Barking

by Moses Wright

Not all dog barking is a sign of aggression. Dogs often bark due to boredom or fear.

Dog barking can become a problem for the dog owner and a nuissance to the neighbors. The owner of a barking dog may be eager to learn secrets to stopping a dog's barking.

Many dogs will bark when they are alone because they become bored. A dog owner can reserve some toys including a Kong for the dogs use while the dog owner is not home. A Kong is a dog toy that can be filled with dog treats to keep the dog occupied and mentally stimulated.

Many dog owners unintentionally contributed to the dog barking problem by teaching a dog to bark. When dog barking is a problem, teaching a dog to "speak" on command is not necessarily a good idea.

Not all barking as bad. Some dog owners feel safer because their dogs bark when a stranger approaches the home. Teaching the dog to a "quiet" or "stop barking" command can give the dog owner some control over how much the dog barks.

But dog owners should reward the dog with a treat or a click from a clicker when the dog stops barking after the dog owner tells the dog to stop barking or be quiet. Since the dog owner has to be careful not to reward the barking, the dog owner should wait a few seconds after the dog stops barking before giving the dog a treat if it's still quiet.

In the initial training of the dog, the dog owner should show the dog a treat while the dog is barking. Most dogs will stop barking and pay attention to the treat.

When the dog stops barking the dog owner should praise the dog for being quiet and give that dog the treat after the dog is been quiet for a few seconds. If the dog starts barking again after being given the treat, the dog owner should present the dog with another treat and wait for the dog to be quiet.

By using a clicker at the time the treat is given, the clicker becomes a positive reward for the dog. After pairing the treat with the clicker, a treat should only be given occasionally along with the use of the clicker to reward positive behavior. - 20511

The Tiny Herder of the Shetland Islands, the Shetland Sheepdog

The Tiny Herder of the Shetland Islands, the Shetland Sheepdog

by Troy Richardson

One of the mysterious dog breeds in the world is probably the famous Shetland Sheepdog or simply known as the Sheltie. Its direct ancestor is undefined and the reason behind its temperament is vague but whats certain is the fact that the Sheltie first appeared in the rocky terrains of Shetland Island of Scotland. The Sheltie looks like a small Collie but according to some, the Sheltie is not the result of intentional breeding that will result to a miniature Collie.

Conclusively, the breeds behind the development of the Sheltie are the Scottish Rough Collie, Pomeranian, the now extinct Greenland Yakki, and the King Charles Spaniel. It was believed that the task of this breed was to herd stocks in Shetland Island but now, theories say otherwise. When the Collies herded and guided stocks, the Sheltie was chasing and herding smaller animals such as ducks and squirrels.

Today, the Sheltie is a well-known family pet and companion and it excels in this field outstandingly. Moreover, additional likable disposition of the Sheltie is its eagerness to please the master, obedience and extreme loyalty. With proper and correct training, the Sheltie is a potential skillful dog and reliable household companion.

A Sheltie that was not properly exposed to new people when it is young will shy away from strangers during its adult days. This breed is a possible great playmate to humans especially to children therefore, it is best to socialize them whence they are young. Children should be instructed and guided, too, on how to treat the Sheltie so as to avoid accidents like trampling of the tiny dog.

It was mentioned that the Sheltie was not really meant for herding but curiously, it possesses a natural herding ability that it can't help but chase and herd smaller creatures at home or in the outdoors. Because of this ability and energy, it is important to exercise them daily in the form of running and chasing in the open field. This is to keep them healthy mentally and physically and to utilize its unused herding energy as well.

Generally, the Sheltie stands 13 to 16 inches in height and weighs 14 to 27 pounds. Its long and thick coat consists of an upper coat that serves as a guard hair and an undercoat that serves as comfort against hot or cold temperatures. The outer coat is thick, long and coarse and is water-repellent while the undercoat is soft and shorter.

The general colors of the Sheltie are sable, tri-colour and blue merle. The sable is either golden or mahogany and the tri-colour is white, black and tan. The blue merle is composed of grey, white, black and tan.

In 1909, the first Sheltie was first registered in the English Kennel Club and in 1911; the first Sheltie was registered in the American Kennel Club. This breed, even if not intended to be a herder, has a natural affinity in herding smaller creatures which is often seen through its chasing smaller animals. What's certain, however, that herder or not, the Sheltie is still recognized as an outstanding pet of families around the world. - 20511

Dogs Get Allergies Too!

Dogs Get Allergies Too!

by Joanne Gallagher

Many dogs can suffer from allergic reactions to various things. Breeds such as Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Schnauzers, and Terriers may be genetically pre-disposed to allergies, specifically, allergies caused by ingredients found in food.

Food allergies may manifest themselves in cats and dogs in the following ways: Their skin becomes itchy and irritated on their face, feet, ears, forelegs, armpits and amongst the area around the base of the tail. In addition, frequent inner ear infections, loss of hair, extreme scratching, hot spots, and skin infections that may respond to antibiotics but return after the antibiotics are completed. Increased incidence of bowel movements is another symptom of dogs with food allergies. Dogs normally have around 1.5 bowel movements daily, where food allergies may increase the frequency to 3 or more per day.

Ingredients in dog food such as preservatives, additives, peanut butter and tomatoes cause allergic reactions. Peanut butter is sometimes an ingredient in dog biscuits, while tomato paste is sometimes an ingredient in dry dog food. Dogs can also be allergic to protein, such as chicken, beef, or carbohydrates such as wheat and corn. Veterinarians recommend a diet of lamb and rice for dogs with allergic reactions.

You can prepare allergy free pet food for dog at home. Remember, dogs love fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Keep in mind that vegetables also provide additional benefits that will help your dog or cat live a longer more healthy life. Be sure to change your dog's diet gradually as to avoid stomach problems.

Some dog allergies are due to the environment. Pets are commonly allergic to trees, grass, pollen and fabrics such as wool or nylon. Others environmental causes would include plastic or rubber materials, mites, flea bites or insects. Their body responds to these allergens by becoming itchy. When dogs scratch too much, sores develop which creates a perfect place for a bacterial infection to manifest itself. When a dog is not in direct contact with the allergen, Veterinarians diagnose dermatitis by inhalation, aka Atopy, which is an allergy that results from inhalation of pollen, dust, mold, or any allergy substance in the air.

Inflammation of the Paws, ears, and face may be a result of dog allergies. Seek advice from your veterinarian about controlling pet allergies. To provide relief and healing to sores on a dog's body, treatments such as fatty acid supplements, hypoallergenic shampoo and hydrocortisone creams are most efficient. Antihistamines may be used to relieve the dogs itching and make your dogs suffering more bearable. There are a few side effects to make note of when using an antihistamine. Among these are sleepiness, hyperactivity, constipation, cotton mouth & a decreased desire for food. Be sure you have consulted your veterinarian before using any medication for your pet.

When dogs have allergic reactions, the allergy frequently presents itself in the form of a sore on the dogs back or stomach. These sores often times force the dog to lick or claw at the infected area causing loss of hair. Food allergies as well as environmental factors can make your dog's life insufferable. Pin pointing the cause of the allergy will improve your pet's life immensely! - 20511

Similar to people, dogs can experience from the effects of allergies. By contacting your veterinarian, they can be controlled. In addition Joanne Gallagher suggests checking out (http://jakesdoghouse.com/) Jakes Dog House for all natural, (http://jakesdoghouse.com/Dog-Treats/Holistic/sc26563/) holistic dog treats, glucosamine dog food and organic dog biscuits.
