How to Easily Stop Dog Aggression

How to Easily Stop Dog Aggression

by Craig Clemins

Aggressive dogs pose a frightening and at times dangerous dilemma. Luckily, if you dog undergoes aggressive dog training, many of the problems can quickly go away.

Millions of people have experienced instances of dog bites and in most of these reports those people are children.

Aggression in dogs can be brought about in a number of ways. Sometimes the environment that they live in plays a big part, while other times they inherit aggressive behavior. Some breeds are more likely to be aggressive than others, Akita's and Bulldogs are fine examples of this. As dogs traditionally live in packs, they are also built to fight for the top position and sometimes do this using aggression.

It's very important that you understand the reasons for aggressive behavior and that you then train your dog so that it's less inclined to be aggressive. By confirming your spot as leader of the pack you will gain respect and are much more likely to be obeyed. By giving in to your dog you are effectively leaving yourself wide open to more aggressive behavior.

The cause of your dog's aggression may be fear, or protecting their territory. Dogs are often aggressive amongst themselves, especially when two dogs of the same sex meet. Whatever the cause or reason for your dogs aggression, you will need to start re-training your dog as soon as possible.

As soon as your puppy is 3 months of age you should get it used to socializing with other dogs. Some trainers suggest that your puppy needs to be 1 year old, however 3 months has always been fine in my experience. If you have an adult dog, it will most likely require more just socialization to fix the problem.

Regardless of how stubborn your dog may seem, with consistency and persistence you can train it to be less aggressive. Make sure you are seen as the Alpha Dog and have the respect of your dog - this will make the training that much easier. Positive reinforcement and praise goes a long way, use it when your dog behaves the way you want him to and he will learn over time how he should be behaving.

Finally, aggressive dogs do pose a real danger and training should be done with precaution. If you ever feel overly threatened, the best thing to do is to get your dog to a vet as soon as possible. There may be some illness that is resulting in the aggression or you may need a professional trainer to assist you. - 20511

The American Kennel Club And Several Documented Dog Breeds

The American Kennel Club And Several Documented Dog Breeds

by Bernard Gordon

The American Kennel Club has been around for a lot of years. They impart registration for dogs and can supply a certified electronic or printed document that displays the roots of a dog and all the other worthy facts of the stock of the dog. The American Kennel Club has been the advocate for dog owners and dogs in this country for many years.

As of right now the AKC recognizes over 160 breeds of purebred dogs. These vary from the particularly popular dogs like the Labrador retrievers and the Cocker Spaniels to the more unknown breeds such as the Petit Basset Griffon Venden or the Borzoi.

The accepted breeds are further broken down into groups, which connote a type that fits the individuality of the breed. These groups often signify the intent of the dog and what it was bred for in the past, whether it was for hunting, herding or even just for enjoyment.

A significant group is the sporting group, which includes retrievers, setters and spaniels. Members of this group need ordinary and stimulating exercise. Many of them have natural instincts in the water and woods and they are often good at hunting and other field activities.

The hound groups of breeds were usually used for hunting in the past. Many of them have an heightened sense of smell to pursue a trail of prey. They also have enormous endurance to further hunt down their game. This group includes Basset hounds, Beagles and Bloodhounds.

The working group of dogs was originally bred to work at pulling sleds or performing water rescues. The Terrier Group includes dogs that were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin. Terriers tend to have very spunky and feisty personalities.

The one group that was bred mostly as a pet and just for pleasure is the toy group. Just as their title suggests they tend to be petite but lively. Every group has small dogs however so a small dog is not inevitably part of the toy group. Some popular breeds from the toy group are the spunky Chihuahua and the lovable and gentle Cavalier King Charles spaniel. The non-sporting group is the next group and it includes such breeds as the Dalmatian and the Chow-Chow. The ever-popular Poodle is too part of the non-sporting group.

The herding group is the newest classification that just came about in 1983. These breeds were in the past part of the working group. These dogs were bred to herd other animals such as cattle or sheep. These include the Corgi and the Shetland Sheepdog. Each group of breeds has their own individual characteristics and you need to check them out to see which one appeals to you. - 20511

Cool Dog Names

Cool Dog Names

by Marion Jones

Fashion appears to decree everything nowadays days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is dictated by the requirement to be fashionable. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because no sooner is something in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to pick a cute dog name that may not be fashionable next year? People usually play it safe as a result, which is why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cute dog names are given below with the reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cooler than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cool dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is based in history. It has a timeless quality which has somewhat surprisingly failed to increase its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cool dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to begin. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a certain field. It is indeed a high form of praise and therefore is definitely a cool dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of Disney. Lady and the Tramp was a huge hit and made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case popularity is second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cute dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is immeasurably cool to call your dog after such a tremendous icon who has never gone out of fashion himself.

Shadow: There is a dark and mysterious quality about Shadow that makes it a cool dog name. It would be used to best effect on a big dog though because it wouldn't have the same strong effect with a small breed.

Whatever cute dog names you consider for your mut, it is one sure way to give your dog an identity of their own and make your dog unforgettable to others. - 20511

Feeding Teacup Yorkshire Terrier Pups Homemade Dog Food

Feeding Teacup Yorkshire Terrier Pups Homemade Dog Food

by Beatriz Jensen

A correct diet is essential for maintaining your Yorkie Maltese teacup dog's internal health. It can be said that regular grooming helps to keep him looking healthy.

Teacup dog puppies love food. A puppys diet should always include a balanced mixer meal to ensure an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals for them.

The benefits of grooming a teacup dog are carried through to the entire household. The dog will shed less hair on carpets and furniture.

Most teacup dog puppies love raw meat, but this is not always the best for their wellbeing and health. Some bones are sharp or splinter easily and not appropriate for puppies or any dog, for that matter.

If it shows any other symptoms of illness, is listless or the diarrhea does not clear up quickly, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Grooming a dog for showing can become almost a full-time concern anyway, with some long-haired toy breeds - who spend much of their lives being bathed, having their coats curled, and even wearing a perfect hair net to prevent lovingly combed ears dangling in their food and water bowls!

The skin, in addition to the blood supply, is stimulated during grooming. This will certainly make the dog feel better.

The grooming session will then become even more of a laborious chore. However, your Yorkie Maltese teacup dog will respond to a positive attitude, and even start to enjoy the daily session, making things easier for both of you.

Grooming can ensure that an owner finds early on skin conditions. Because of this, the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions may occur, and this is better for your Yorkie Maltese teacup dog's health.

Pay attention to how much your puppy eats. If they usually cannot finish the bowl but suddenly began swallowing food down and are finished soon, you may want to pour more in their bowl to experiment, see if the puppys appetite increased. - 20511

The American Staffordshire Terrier: Real American Fighter and Companion Dog

The American Staffordshire Terrier: Real American Fighter and Companion Dog

by Troy Howard

In the UK, they have the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffie) but in the US, they have the American Staffordshire Terrier. Simply called the Amstaff, this American version have roots that trace back to terrier and molosser and has ancestors that were used as dog gladiators in the now defunct bull-baiting game of 18th century England. Its nearest family in the US is another bull-baiting breed descendant, the American Pit Bull Terrier.

The bull-baiting breeds came to the US when bull baiting was illegalized in Britain and Ireland. It was the English and Irish immigrants who brought them here in the hopes of continuing their fighting legacy but this time in the forms of dog to dog fighting. When they arrived in the US, however, the fights weren't as fancied as in the UK and so they continued to breed these dogs as a form of companion dogs.

The Amstaffs helped build the US by helping at new homesteads, farms and ranches. The breed worked as farm dogs, hunters and guard dogs. Those days are over though because today, the Amstaffs are well-known as companion dogs and dog sports competitors.

The Amstaffs are hardworking, agile, docile and quick learners. They can learn tricks quite easily and are sensitive to the master's orders therefore they excel at competitions. Most times, you will see Amstaffs joining obedience and agility competitions and tracking and conformation games.

At home, Amstaffs make incredible companion dogs as they are obedient and sensitive to the orders of their masters. They can pick up all forms of behaviors and tends to emulate them. This is good and bad in a sense that if the master show good actions, the Amstaff will tend to be good but if a negative behavior is displayed, the Amstaff will tend to act unfavorably, too.

Their posture shows off an air of great strength, agility and poise that sometimes they tend to look intimidating. Indeed, this breed is what it manifests outwardly because inwardly they are indeed fearless, intelligent, and tenacious, however, they also possess a great amount of devotedness, friendliness and loyalty to their masters. This breed is sensitive and reacts automatically to any kinds of sounds and because of this, they tend to become excellent watch and guard dogs.

Physically, the Amstaff breed is short and stocky with a strong and well- built head. The coat is short, tight, glossy and coarse to the touch. It may come in colors of any solid, patched or parti colors but all white, tan, black and liver are not well-accepted.

Some people are still confused as whether the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) and American Staffordshire Terrier are the same. In truth, they are two differing breeds and they have different body build and they're bloodlines have been separated by various breeding. However, the AKC allows double registration of the breeds therefore the Amstaff can be APBT and Amstaff at the same time, and vice versa. - 20511

Dog Biting Problems-A Serious Issue

Dog Biting Problems-A Serious Issue

by Brad Davenport

Of all of the dog behavior problems there are, biting is probably the most serious. If your dog pees on the rug, runs away, or goes on the couch it probably won't be a big deal. If you dog gives someone a serious bite, however, many communities require that it be put down. Dog biting problems can literally mean the end of your dog's life, so it is important to train your dog to never bite anyone.

However, biting problems in puppies are quite normal. When puppies start to teeth, they will have a natural tendency to bite everything that they can get hold of, including you. Though a puppy bite might break your skin, it will not cause any serious damage. But then, this is the right time for you to start training your puppy to stop biting.

Don't be cruel to your dog or excessively harsh with the discipline, but let your dog no when he bites you too hard. If you dog bites you hard, pull your hand away immediately and say ouch, or bad dog, or something like that. Let him know that he has hurt you.

Most often a dog bites due to some psychological reasons. A dog takes a bite not just because he wants to hurt something or someone. They also bite to hold on to something or they bite a person or another dog to warn them of something, or they bite just for the joy of it. The best way to break the biting problem of your dog is to start early, when he is still a puppy.

But then, some dogs are naturally aggressive and bite because they are inherently temperamental. To take care of such dogs you have to send them to an obedience school.

You have to take this problem very seriously and take steps to find the best help. Getting help from professional dog trainers are probably the only option to solve this problem.

If one of your neighbors owns a pooch with dog biting problems, the best thing you can do is to prepare yourself. Buy some strong pepper spray formulated to take care of dogs. If the dog tries to bite you, don't hesitate to spray it in his eyes. You could also try a more friendly approach. When you run into aggressive dogs, simply give them a piece of beef jerky. If you can make friends, you can avoid being bitten. - 20511

Discover Purebreds, Mutts and Designer Dogs Today

Discover Purebreds, Mutts and Designer Dogs Today

by Mike Jones

There have always been mixed breed dogs that differ in looks, disposition and size even when they come from the same set of offspring. Usually these dogs are referred to as "mutts" and they are much beloved. They ordinarily have good health and they make great pets.

A mixed breed dog is not a purebred and it may not be known if the parents of the dog are purebreds. They are basically dogs from an unidentified heritage and a uncertain genetic line. They are frequently sharp and wonderful and they make great pets but their lineage is unidentified.

A purebred on the other hand is a dog that has two parents that are both of the same breed. Many times there are extensive records of the heredity of these dogs and breeders are very shrewd in their breeding techniques to make sure that they turn out the strongest heritable tendencies.

You may choose a purebred for a pet or you may desire a mutt. A mutt will usually have robust health and they do make wonderful pets but a purebred has certain qualities that are bred in. There also is another alternative that you may consider and that is the hybrid dog or the "designer dog".

Hybrids are a cross of two purebred dogs from two distinct breeds. They are distinct from a mutt because their family tree is well-known. Each of their parents are purebreds with hereditary lines that can regularly be traced back many generations.

Hybrid dogs are becoming rather the fashion these days. You see them in all places from movies to dog shows. These dogs tend to have the best personality from both of the breeds and usually a good blend of both breeds.

These hybrid dogs regularly have really cool names such as a cockapoo for a cocker and poodle combination, a puggle, which is a pug and beagle combination, a goldendoodle, which is a golden retriever and poodle combination and of course, many other fun mixtures of the two purebred names.

The designer hybrid dogs make excellent pets and you usually end up with the best of two breeds. They tend to have resilient health and they are clever and pleasing to have. - 20511

Stop that Dog Barking!

Stop that Dog Barking!

by Kathy Davison

The dog which barks unnecessarily is a pain to live with and agony to live next door to. Some dogs bark because their guarding instinct is very strong and they feel it necessary to alert you to every little noise. Some dogs bark because they are nervous and the sound of their own barking gives them confidence . Some bark because they like the reaction it provokes in you and some bark because they have not been taught not to. It is quite normal for a dog to bark if he hears a strong noise during the night. Continuing to bark after an acceptable time is what you want to deter.

In most cases the way to stop a dog barking is to teach him to bark on command.! This may sound very strange but it does work. At the same time as teaching him to bark you are also teaching him when not to bark.

For the dog to learn this exercise you need to enlist the help of a friend, so that you can set up the situation. You should be sitting and relaxing and then your helper comes to the door and rings the doorbell.. your dog will naturally bark and when he does give him the command speak. Allow him to bark for five seconds and then give him the command quiet, giving him lots of fuss when he does what he is told. Do not attempt to open the door until the dog is quiet . then go to the door open it and speak to your friend on the doorstep as you would a casual caller and then close the door.. go back and sit down and after an interval of 10 mins repeat the whole exercise.. Alternate between speaking to your friend on the doorstep and inviting him in to simulate what would sometimes happen.

Try to repeat this process over a few days ,building up the association with the dog that he is allowed to bark for five seconds when the doorbell rings but he must stop when you say so and the door must not be opened until he is quiet. You are also getting him to associate the word Speak with barking.

Why must the door never be opened until he is silent?

If you allow him to bark as you open the door then he will associate that his barking is what gets the door open, resulting in future problems.

If he is the type of dog who imagines there is someone at the door and barks often unnecessarily the only way you will get him to be quiet is to go and open it. You may even end up in a situation of the dog training you- every time he wants attention he will bark to provoke you into getting up to answer the door to an imaginary caller.

Having taught him to bark on the command speak, you will then be able to get him to bark if you ever feel in a threatening situation-when you are out for a walk and are approached by a suspicious character,or should you hear a strange noise in the middle of the night. You can also apply the same training if your dog barks every time the telephone rings. Arrange for a friend to call you and don t answer until the dog is quiet. On these occasions do not practice giving him the speak command as you do not want him barking every time the phone rings. Simply correct him for barking unnecessarily at the telephone. - 20511

All dogs need the correct amount of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins and water. I'll show you how easy it is to learn how to provide a balanced diet that includes the nutrients listed above.

Potty Training Puppies Help and Information

Potty Training Puppies Help and Information

by Todd Hammerstein

Getting a new puppy? I'll bet you are so excited. I'm not going to break your excitement, but I will tell you that once you get your puppy home he will push your patience further than you thought it could go. One of the first, and most difficult, tasks is to teach your dog to go outside to potty. This takes patience and effort on your part.

If you try to potty train your dog to go to potty outside before it is a month old you may be wasting your time. It's easier and better to start potty training your puppy around two months of age. At this point, the best approach is to work out some kind of routine with your puppy. Haphazard training rarely works.

Instead of running your puppy outside every few minutes, start with thirty minute intervals. The times between going outside can be longer or shorter depending on your dog. Then, take your puppy out around mealtime, so that your own meal will not be interrupted to jump up and run outside with your puppy.

Establishing a training routine and sticking to it will help you train your puppy more quickly. It's hard to accomplish without a schedule. The sooner you establish a training schedule with your puppy, the better you will feel about your puppy and the more at ease the puppy will become.

Some people feel that establishing a routine is just too excessive. The reality is that it is a fairly simple thing to do, and it will help get your puppy trained. It is the best way for your puppy to learn. Just like potty training a child, your puppy will need to see and complete the process a number of times before it actually "clicks" that going outside means time to potty.

If your puppy refuses to go outside try your best to figure out the problem. The first thing the dog has to learn to do is potty outside, not inside. Once that is mastered you can begin to work on other puppy issues, like barking. - 20511

The Most Favored Pet in the US in the Form of the Kind-Hearted and Obedient Labrador Retriever

The Most Favored Pet in the US in the Form of the Kind-Hearted and Obedient Labrador Retriever

by Bret Richardson

Labrador Retriever is a pet name popular all over the world particularly in North America. When you have seen this breed, you will agree with the descriptions: genuinely kind-hearted, affable, family-friendly, reliable and clearly sharp in intellect. They are unquestionably lovable creatures and in fact, the American Kennel Club hailed them as the US's most famous pet.

Labrador Retriever is the name of this pleasant creature and its popularity is unstoppable; in fact, not only in the US and its native land Canada does it is becoming ever more popular but around the world as well. The "Lab", as it is fondly called, first appeared in the icy territories of Canada, Newfoundland particularly, and there it was a reliable and agile companion of fishermen and hunters. At sea, this breed helps with pulling in of nets and catching of escaping fish; and in hunting, they are excellent in redeeming shot game.

Today, the Lab is not merely limited to the hunting job anymore because even inside the homes of delicate and active families, they are welcomed, sheltered, and hailed as a magnificent pet. Labs perfectly epitomizes the loving and fun pet image of almost every family for they are playful, energetic, stable- tempered, affectionate, naturally sweet and eager to please. With friends, strangers, and other animals; they are equably friendly and will interact harmoniously.

This breed is kind-hearted, amiable, and very easy to train; their sweet disposition makes them supremely lovable and you won't be able to help but make them your favorite. They have an excellent level of intelligence and have an affectionate heart that allows them to be naturally tractable making them inarguable in obedience and reliability. It doesn't matter whether you tag this breed along in hunting, at play, or at competitions; you can always expect them to be docile and very capable and this has been proven by thousands of Labrador Retriever owners all over the world to be true.

There are three standard coat colors for Labrador Retriever namely yellow, chocolate and black; other imperfections, mottles, or even combinations of the three standard colors are considered for penalizing by the kennel clubs. The fluff is very short and fairly dense and this makes it a little less soft to the touch; there is also an inner coat and outer coat that helps protect them from weather and water. Because of the composition of their coat, the Labs are able to withstand extreme cold conditions, are able to swim through freezing waters, and protect themselves against any conditions of the ground.

Labs are also perfect as playmates to children and parents don't have to worry as much when the children is at play with them; this breed is inherently playful, gentle, friendly, and naturally affectionate and kind and so they are not likely to be hostile towards persistent and tireless children. As a housedog, the Lab is reliable and extremely loyal and will make a good watch dog but as a guard dog, they are not as excellent. During hunting, Labs are truly retrievers; they redeem shot games and swim across unforgiving waters in able to do their part as a hunting companion to their masters.

The Labrador Retriever is unquestionably great in terms of family affairs and their skills and talents are just overwhelmingly versatile and efficient that people of different sectors trusted them with other critical stuff. Now, this breed is not merely a favored family companion but a trustworthy and credible aid of the society in fight against disabilities, crimes and drugs. Labrador Retrievers are great for police work, narcotics detection, and guide for the blind, service dog for the disabled, search and rescue, sledding, and carting.

Being versatile and excellent in almost every field they are placed in, the Labrador Retriever was categorized in to two groups accordingly; the show lines and the field lines. Show line Labs shows a heavier weight as they are honed for obedience competitions mostly while the field line Labs are more active and requires a more intense form of exercise as they are prone to restlessness without it. Labrador Retrievers are without doubt docile and gentle creatures and just like any other breed, in order to bring out the best in them, must be raised with a consistent and skillful leader. - 20511

Proper Dog Coat Selection

Proper Dog Coat Selection

by Dylan Brodderick

When I was young our schnauzer had a form fitted black and red plaid coat. The fabric was rough. It always looked a bit dirty and the under the belly buttons were difficult to access and the buttons seemed to large for the button holes. As a result we only managed to wrestle the coat on to the unwilling dog once or twice at the start of each winter and for the balance of the winter the poor dog was cold.

These days responsible pet owners know that it is important to protect your dogs from the elements. Accordingly, there are many, many different types of dog coats on the market. You can choose from the strictly functional to the flashy-splashy, from the moderately priced to the less-moderately priced. There are coat styles more suitable to short haired dogs and coat styles more suitable to longer haired dogs. Some dog coats are water-proof, while other coats are insulated. Some people like to have a lighter weight dog coat for the milder days. There are coats that your dog can step into, coats that wrap around with Velcro fasteners, and coats that are similar to capes with a waist band. Some coats designed for larger dogs have pockets for owners to carry items such as dog toys or gloves. A nice feature to look for in a coat is some sort of reflective strip to add to the safety of your pet.

These coats are available in a wide range of colors, fabrics and styles. There are so many different dog coats on the market that it sometimes can be difficult to choose the right coat for your dog. A few things to keep in mind should make choosing a dog coat easier.

1. Where do you live? Or what is the purpose of the dog coat? Is the coat really needed to protect your dog or is it really just to match your new umbrella? If you live in an area that rarely sees freezing weather then you needn?t worry about the warmth of the coat and, in fact, you should be wary of your dog overheating. If you live in an area that experiences severe winters then you should look for a coat that is wind proof and uses high quality fabrics such as gortex. You may also want a coat that is both breathable and water proof.

2. Machine washable. All dogs get dirty, even those who are on a leash and particularly in the spring thaw. Do yourself a favor and only consider getting a dog coat that is machine washable. Dog coats don?t need to be washed as much as people clothes but you should count on washing the dog coat in the mid-season and at the end of every winter.

3. The ease of putting the dog coat on your dog. If the coat isn?t easy to put on then you won?t use it. If you don?t use it then there is no point in buying it. Look for a coat with good quality Velcro fasteners as these seem to be the easiest. Also look for a coat that fastens at the back or side of the dog.

4. Size. Before shopping for your dog coat make sure you measure your dog. Measure the dog from the base of his neck to the start of his tail. Measure again the circumference if his neck and add 1 inch. Measure again around the broadest part of his chest and add one inch. With these measurements in hand you should be able to to choose a coat that will fit your dog appropriately. - 20511

Get Rid Of Dog Fleas

Get Rid Of Dog Fleas

by Ryan Williams

Dog lovers and owners everywhere are often faced with the issue of how to get rid of fleas! When your beloved pooch gets infested with fleas it can be an agonizing experience for both the owner and pet. There can be some dangerous side-effects of some well known dog flea products. The chemicals used in some of the nationally available household name products and major popular brands may be poisoning our pets and damaging our own family?s health at the same time. So the question remains, how to get rid of fleas safely? Our local pet food store sells an assortment of flea collars, flea powders and flea shampoo including Frontline for fleas. Even though the staff are knowledgeable and great, it is still difficult to know which product to use and almost impossible to know all of the active components of these dog flea products.

As people become more aware of issues pertaining to their health, dog owners are seeking all-natural alternatives to the question of how to get rid of fleas. Some of the more common and popular all-natural dog flea remedies are sketched out below:

1. Household salt solution. Sprinkle table salt all over your house. Pay particular attention to where Fido takes his nap. Let the salt sit for at least one week and then look at the results. Fleas don?t seem to like salt. Your dog will lie down on the rugs, etc and the salt will also get on to his fur?fleas don?t like this. A few days later the fleas are gone.

2. Talcum powder to treat dog fleas. Cover your dog or cat with baby powder and this will smother the fleas. This remedy is often recommended for puppies or kittens who are too young to be treated with any flea chemical. You can also use baking soda.

3. Olive oil remedy. For the fleas on adult dogs, you could try an olive oil bath. Start from the dogs head and work your way back so the fleas don't move to the face where it's really tough to pluck them off. Evidence suggests that the fleas just drown in it and fall out. Then just shampoo the dog fleas down the drain.

4. The Garlic solution. Some people swear that garlic is the best all-natural dog fleas remedy. Some people use a garlic pill supplement while others use freshly chopped garlic and mix it into the dog food. The fleas don?t like the scent emitted through the skin of the dog after he ingests garlic.

There seem to be a good number of all-natural solutions to getting rid of fleas. In figuring out how to get rid of fleas it is important to do some research and be diligent. Some remedies are bound to work better than other remedies. For a really serious case of fleas you might want to try a stronger dog flea remedy which are available at the pet store or online or at the vet?s office However, as with all matters pertaining to dog health, always check with your vet. - 20511

How to Stop Your Dog from Digging

How to Stop Your Dog from Digging

by Craig Clemins

Dogs absolutely love to dig, some more than others. If you have a backyard then this spells danger for you. You dog can literally dig holes all through your yard in an afternoon if he gets the urge to do so.

You can either accept this behavior as a normal dog activity or you can make a conscious decision to do something about it.

One way that you can guarantee to keep your dog from digging up your garden is to install a small electric fence at its perimeter. Electric fence's are cheap to buy and extremely easy to set up. They don't do any real harm to your dog either, they only give a very minor flick to encourage your pet not to enter the garden. Don't worry if you have children as these fences can be adjusted to a very minor level that won't hurt your child should they touch it.

Some people will use the foul moth balls to keep their dogs out of the garden. Usually dogs sniff out everything the touch, those smelly moth balls with their foul taste will definitely make the dog want to hang out in your garden. They will have much better things to do with their time than mess with those moth balls. Keep in mind however, that while this is a great way to keep your dog out of the yard, moth balls don't stay forever and will have to be replaced, especially if it should be raining outside. Another downside is that when you are doing work around the yard, you may also pick up this smell as well.

You can also try using a spray deterrent. Bitter apple spray is very effective and easy to use. You simply spray it around the garden every few days and your dog will not want to dig there. Bitter apple dog deterrent can also be used to stop your dog from chewing household furniture and opening the trash bag. Once your dog becomes accustomed to the smell, it will stay well clear off the area.

The main reason that your dog will dig up your yard is that it is in their nature to do so, if you condition them to discontinue this behavior you will be able to keep your beautiful yard and spend less time being angry with your beloved pet.

Make sure you are persistent and from when training your dog not to dig. Don't expect results overnight and prepare yourself for the occasional digging spree. In time and with persistence your dog will learn to stop digging. - 20511

Choosing The Right Type Of Dog Cage

Choosing The Right Type Of Dog Cage

by Donald C. Mihajlov

Many dog owners choose to let their animals romp freely through the house while others choose to place their pets in a cage during certain times. This is done as a training or control measurement instead of tying or putting the dog outside for hours, leaving them to bark uncontrollably and annoying everyone. There are many different types of dog cages, in a wide array materials, colors and prices.

(http://www.dogcages-usa.com/index.php?cPath=1) Dog cages come in a wide array of colors, shapes, sizes and budgets to suit almost anyone's needs. For the larger dogs, a steel cage is recommended due to its strength and long life. There are many places where you can get a dog cage at great savings. Check the largest retail pet store outlet in your area as you will find many great bargains.

Dog cages are also used as training method and can be very useful as a transporting method for those who do not like their pets climbing all around in the car when they are driving. Another great use that one can put into play when out on an excursion, if on a family picnic for example, take along your pet cage and that way when you are all sitting down to eat or want to relax, your pet will be enclosed and resting.

Depending on what type of (http://www.dogcages-usa.com/index.php?cPath=1) dog cages you choose, make sure to lay some old blankets inside as a way to provide warmth and comfort to the family pet. Toss in some toys and bones and use the cage at night, if you don't like your pet roaming around the house.

Certain types of dog cages can also be used as a training method, and when the pet misbehaves consistently, place it in the cage for a time-out. Soon it will learn to break the habit that has put it their in the first place. - 20511

How To Deal With Dog Behavior Problems

How To Deal With Dog Behavior Problems

by Brad Davenport

Almost all puppies exhibit some kind of behavior problems that you have to deal with at one time or other. Some dogs might take longer to be toilet trained while some might have a terrible chewing habit that leaves all your favorite objects in tatters. But sometimes, your puppy might have some behavior problems that are so severe which cannot be dealt with by yourself and need the assistance of a professional dog trainer. If your dog shows such sever problems, it is better to consult a professional as soon as possible.

I personally had to face some serious behaviour problem with my adopted pooch. Most often shelter puppies are abandoned once or even multiple times and some are even abused by their owners. This is one of the reasons for the behavior problems arising in adopted puppies.

In the case of the dog I bought, the canine behavior issues didn't start right away. She seemed pretty well-trained for the most part. Then all of a sudden, the dog behavior problems started. I don't know what set it off, but suddenly she was afraid to see me leave the apartment. I think she was worried that I would not come back.

The minute I tried to leave the apartment she would start to act out. She would go literally crazy, raising hell, peeing on the floor and running through anything on her path. Most probably she thought that I was not going to come back and this problem became a very serious issue. After unsuccessfully trying some tips that I found on dog training, I finally had to visit a professional dog trainer.

The professional said that persistence and patience is the only way to solve this dog behavioral problem. As advised, I would leave the apartment after telling my dog that I would be back soon and as said, I will come back after 20 seconds.

I repeated the same phrase every time I left to come right back in. I slowly increased the time I was out of the apartment till I reached an hour. Though it took me several weeks and tested my patience to no end, finally I was able to make my pooch trust me and now she is one of the best behaved dogs in my neighbourhood. - 20511

Food For Fido

Food For Fido

by Kathy Davison

Educating yourself on what to feed your dog can be very confusing. Every expert out there has his own favourite canine diet and there is such a vast selection of dog food available that it can be quite confusing for the first time dog owner to decide what to feed.

In fact lets be honest even us seasoned dog owners get caught up in all the different opinions and who knows what is what? Think of it----Fresh, tinned, dried, vacuum-packed ..the list is endless. Obviously a puppy has a different food requirement from an adult dog so make sure that you feed the puppy the correct puppy diet from the range of food available.

The majority of pet shops and many vets will probably advise feeding your new puppy or dog on a complete dried food which is considered nutritionally balanced. Some will suggest tinned food or vacuum packed meat products. These types of food are many and varied and are advertised as suitable for most dogs. In fact most of the advertising will suggest that it is the only way to feed your dog if you want him or her to have a long and healthy life. To discuss each and every type of manufactured food product would be a major book in itself so lets look here at another choice...the Natural diet.

This diet is structured on what your dog would eat in the wild and what wolves eat in the wild today. It is a diet based on raw meaty bones and what most people fed their dogs until the dog food manufacturers got into action about 30-40 years ago. It is the diet that your dog is designed to eat. They have the teeth to tear, shred, rip flesh and crunch bones and their stomachs are designed to digest both raw meat and raw bones. Remember that dogs are carnivores and their diet would be mostly meat and bones. They may eat the stomach contents of prey ,that is the vegetable matter but it is not a vital part of their diet and they do not need it.

Most vets will recommend one of the commercial diets as the instructions are on the packet and they do not have the time in a normal consultation to go into the benefits of natural feeding and the quantities needed. Some vets sell dried dog food and so will recommend it. Some pet food manufacturers sponsor Vet colleges so therefore the alternative ways of feeding are not given priority or even discussed and veterinary students do not learn them.

In fact to be honest many dog owners are told that raw uncooked bones are bad for their dogs. The convenience of opening a tin,or scooping out a couple of mug fulls of dried food is simple, requiring little or no thought which suits the busy lives that many owners now lead. The fact that there is now a massive multimillion pound industry which effectively tells dog owners that they the owners couldn't possibly work out how and what to feed their dogs on their own,has lead to increasing numbers of dog owners accepting that the manufacturers must know best and being drawn into buying commercially prepared food and artificial bones.

All tinned and processed foods have been cooked and the resulting changes in the structure of the food means that the dogs digestive system has to work much harder as it was designed to digest raw ingredients. Then there is the major effect that cooked processed food has on the dogs teeth. The majority of dogs fed on an artificial diet will have to have their dirty teeth and infected gums attended to by a Vet several times through their lives. The processed food gets stuck in the teeth causing infection. Just take a look at at your own teeth after you have eaten a biscuit.....that's what your dogs teeth look like after eating dried pellets. Even using artificially produced teeth cleaning products will leave a deposit on the dogs teeth.! Bacteria enter the body through the diseased and infected gums and teeth and this can set up chronic infections which later may result in liver, heart or kidney problems.

Cleaning your dogs teeth is not going to remove all the gunge and honestly who is going to clean their dogs teeth twice a day! By eating raw bones the dogs floss their own teeth in the ripping and shredding action. The only teeth that need to be artificially cleaned are the canine teeth which are the teeth designed for killing the prey and are not involved in the ripping and grinding motion. Try cleaning your dogs teeth with an electric toothbrush .If you start when they are a puppy I can assure you they will get used to it. - 20511

Choosing The Right Dog Breed

Choosing The Right Dog Breed

by Lena Hellsten

When youre about to bring a new dog into your family it is important to carefully choose which kind of dog breed youre getting. Different kinds of dogs suit everyones varying lifestyle.

If you are living on the country side and have a lot of nature around you and there are great possibilities for your dog to run around and play, you can get a dog that needs a lot of activation easily. This could be any of the larger types of dogs, like Labradors, Pointers, German Shepherds and also smaller kinds, like Jack Russel Terriers.

If youre living in the city it is often a good idea to get a somewhat smaller dog, especially if you are going to bring it with you to public places, since it often it easier with a small dog.

The smallest dogs are Chihuahua dogs and Yorkshire Terriers. They are very cute and sweet yet they do have a lot of energy which is something to keep in mind. You will need to spend a lot of time activating your dog. They also tend to have pretty strong territorial and competitive instincts which mean it might not be the best dog when you have young children.

There are many dogs that are great if you enjoy a calmer lifestyle. Many larger dogs like Labradors and Great Danes have a stable and calm temper. They do need quite a bit of exercise of course. You may also enjoy different breeds of Spitz dogs, for example the Japanese Spitz. Those dogs have a lovely temper in general.

Getting a dog really is a great thing to do for yourself and your health and wellbeing. Not only will you be (probably) a whole lot more active but youll also find yourself playing and laughing more. These are all great factors if you want to live a long, healthy life.

Even though all dogs are extremely charming as puppies, it is important that you consider what that specific breed will bring to your life. Some people love to spend a lot of time brushing and grooming their dogs while others prefer to have a dog with very little maintenance.

When youre getting your dog, make sure youve read a bit about it before you buy and you can be sure youll have a wonderful time together. - 20511

Animal Hospitals Let the Air Out of the Bag, and Tout Real Dog Nutrition

Animal Hospitals Let the Air Out of the Bag, and Tout Real Dog Nutrition

by Dr. N.J. Omaboe

Animal hospitals recognize that whole nutrition for dogs is a careful guesstimate, at best. But don't worry. The finest health for your dog doesn't have to be a lost cause. Nevertheless, it can be gone astray inside a bag of unfilled nutritional promises.

Repeatedly, you'll read that bone meal, or meat meal, or corn meal is the chief element in your dog's packaged foodstuff. That does not mean that it will prove to be the greatest morning or evening banquet.

Rather, holistic dog feeding, tailored to your specific pet, is more likely to promote your dog's best shot at good health and longevity.

Unrefined foods for dogs supply nutrients that are more readily accessible for dogs' systems to use. Unrefined foods are also more capable in their transfer of energy. Moreover, if you choose organically produced food, you choose to do away with the chemicals that can obstruct nutrient and energy digestion. These are all advantages that hardly any processed foods can claim.

Certain dog indicators, such as constipation, obesity, malnutrition, skin and coat problems, and allergies can result from inappropriate feeding. And not uncommonly, ailments of the eyes, heart, gums, kidneys, and liver are possible. Furthermore, studies have confirmed that cancer thrives when the diet is deficient.

Ask a (http://animalhospitalsaveterinariansveterinaryclinicgenevadogs.com/) veterinarian, and they're likely to propose a particular diet for a young pups care, or during a dog's pregnancy, or in response to any number of dog health troubles or sickness. Your veterinarian or dog nutritionist can also suggest a mixture of natural recipes, planned for your healthy dog's age, weight, and activity level.

Pet tablets are over prescribed. Some canine drugs are important for survival, but several are used to treat dog symptoms that can be prevented with an appropriate diet. For almost every dog, the best medicine is the food that he or she eats. Nevertheless, no one can define the specific percentages of nutrients, fat, and protein that is essential for optimal health of every animal, a diet composed of actual food is always best. Your veterinary nutrition authority can put together a pure food meal plan intended for your dog's individual needs, or to lessen the chances of the development of specific needs.

To give your dog the best opportunity to thrive, feed foods that will remedy health problems, or foods to maintain his or her already good health; make regular visits to your pet's vet; and brush your dog's teeth often. And, don't forget that appropriate and timely vaccinations give your dog the best shot at fighting common, and sometimes deadly, illnesses.

Don't mistake endearing dog food advertisements and heartfelt promises for good dog nutrition. Convenience is really the only advantage that they can offer. And please, don't confuse meat meal with real meat, or with a real meal. - 20511

Dr. Nortey Omaboe has been helping dog owners sustain the health and wellbeing of their dogs through high-quality nutrition for more than two decades. He owns and operates (http://animalhospitalsaveterinariansveterinaryclinicgenevadogs.com/) Cabinet Vtrinaire International, located in Mies Switzerland, which is just outside of Geneva.

Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie): The Diminutive Herder of Shetland Island, Scotland

Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie): The Diminutive Herder of Shetland Island, Scotland

by Matthew Houston

The Shetland Sheepdog or simply known as the Sheltie is one of the dog breeds around the world whose origin is not exactly defined. What's certain, however, is the fact that the Sheltie is a supposed original resident of the rocky region of the Shetland Island in Scotland. Physically, this breed appears like a miniature Collie but in fact, the breeding was never intended to achieve this kind of result.

It is concluded that the main contributors for the development of the Sheltie are the Scottish Rough Collie, Pomeranian, Greenland Yakki (now extinct), and the King Charles Spaniel. During it's prominence in Shetland Island, this little breed was believed to do herding tasks just like any other Collies. It was discovered though that while its larger look-alike herded stocks, this breed did the chasing and herding of smaller creatures such as ducks, squirrels and vermin.

Today, the Sheltie is a well-known family pet and companion and it excels in this field outstandingly. Moreover, additional likeable disposition of the Sheltie is its eagerness to please the master, obedience and extreme loyalty. With proper and correct training, the Sheltie is a potential skillful dog and reliable household companion.

If not often exposed to people in the beginning, this breed has the tendency to become aloof towards strangers when it grows up. It does well around people especially children and therefore should be socialized at a young age. The Sheltie is a superb watch dog as well, barking as a signal when there is an approaching human or car towards the house.

It was mentioned that the Sheltie was not really meant for herding but curiously, it possesses a natural herding ability that it can't help but chase and herd smaller creatures at home or in the outdoors. Because of this ability and energy, it is important to exercise them daily in the form of running and chasing in the open field. This is to keep them healthy mentally and physically and to utilize its unused herding energy as well.

The normal height of the Sheltie is 13 to 16 inches while its normal weight is between 14 to 27 pounds. It has an outer coat and an inner coat wherein the outer coat is long, coarse and dense and acts as a water-guard. The inner coat is somewhat softer and serves as a comforter against hot or cold temperatures.

There are three main colors of Sheltie namely sable, tri-colour and blue merle. Sable can be golden or mahogany while tri-colour is composed of black, white and tan. Blue merle is made up of grey, white, black and tan.

The Sheltie was first recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1909 and in 1911, the American Kennel Club followed suit through the registry of the famous Sheltie "Lord Scott". A herding breed or not, people believe that the Sheltie possesses a naturally active and affectionate disposition that is often manifested through its inclination in chasing small creatures and children. It is a great and dependable breed and these facts make it an excellent pet to all kinds of people around the world. - 20511

How To Help Your Dog Stop Barking

How To Help Your Dog Stop Barking

by Ted Johnson

Are you bothered by your dog's constant barking? Learning to control your dog's barking is challenging, regardless of the breed you own. Different breeds have different reasons for starting to fuss. If you can determine the reason your dog's barking is out of control it will help you teach your dog to control the barking and to bark when necessary, not at every little thing they see or hear.

Some dog are just barkers. It may seem like they live to bark. Some people don't mind a lot of dog barking, but it is annoying to many other people. Try to remember that when dogs bark they are using vocal cues and signals to try to communicate with humans or other dogs. Don't try to stop your dog from barking completely, just try to narrow the barking down to when it is essential for their communication.

First, research the type of dog you want before you get a dog. Knowing the purpose of a dog breed will give you a lot of information about how much the dog may bark. Don't choose a dog bred for hunting or for stopping intruders.

Once you get a dog, don't let it teach you to respond to incessant barking. If you get up and do what your dog wants just because it doesn't stop barking, you are only rewarding the problem. Respond to your dog once she quiets down. This will train your dog to understand which behaviors will get her rewarded.

If your dog starts to bark, don't do anything immediately. Remember, dogs are going to bark at times. If the barking continues you need to take action. Grasp her muzzle and close it with your hand gently, but firmly. If she tries to free herself from your hold, do not hurt her, but use your other hand to hold her collar.

Hopefully, you can figure out why your dog barks non-stop. Sometimes, it is too difficult to figure out and you may need some outside help to stop annoying barking behavior. A barking problem can be helped, with assistance I was able to stop my two dogs from barking at every little noise or movement. - 20511

Finding The Right Pet Gate For Your Dog

Finding The Right Pet Gate For Your Dog

by Matthew Penrod

Is your dog young and untrained or destructive? Do you wish you could keep him secure while you are busy without necessarily locking him up? A good pet gate could be the answer to your problem.

A good pet barrier is beneficial to any home where dogs are present. You can use them to keep your children and dog apart while you cannot closely supervise. It is especially useful if the dog is eating and your small child is curious. A fence is also a great tool for housetraining a young dog or puppy. You can keep them in a certain area that is easy to clean so they do not mess on your carpet. It is also an excellent substitute for shutting them in a room or crate and preventing separation anxiety.

The strongest type of dog gate is a hardware-mounted one. This means it is screwed into the desired area and requires tools. Even so, they are simple to install. They are extremely well built and durable, made from mostly wood or stainless steel. These are good for more powerful dogs because they cannot be overturned. Some models even feature a swinging door to allow you to pass through easily.

Pressure-mounted gates do not require any tools to install. They simply rely on pressure against the wall or frame of a door. As these can be unstable and tip over, they should not be used at the tops of stairs. They are usually made of wood and wire, and are very useful because they are portable and simply rely on compression.

Barriers for stairways in your house or on your deck are also available. Make sure these are always hardware-mounted, as a pressure-mounted gate can fall over. There should never be a fixed bar at the bottom of the device. It can be a tripping hazard and very dangerous around stairs. Finally, you should make sure there is a mechanism to keep the door from swinging out and over the stairway.

Pet barriers are also available for your car. They are very useful in keeping your pet in one section of the car and away from your lap and feet. It also cuts down on the distraction of your dog running around the back of the vehicle. Your passengers will also notice an absence of pet hair in the front seat as well! These gates are secure, require no tools to install, and fit most vehicles.

Be aware of a few things before you purchase your pet gate. Stronger and taller breeds will require a hardware-focused fence to be safe and effective. If you have a dog that likes to chew on everything, be sure to find a stainless steel model. Swinging units can be found for those who find stepping over a gate annoying or physically difficult.

There are many styles, uses, and designs of pet gate. When you go shopping, keep in mind your dog's size and personality and your purpose in using it. Dog barriers are available at a variety of pet stores and even online. - 20511
