Do you have dog bite insurance? If you own a dog you can be held liable if your dog bites someone. Typically renter's insurance or homeowner's policies provide some cover for dog bite liability, but these policies may not cover the complete cost of a claim and if they don't, the dog owner will be liable for the rest.
Throughout the United States, but in every state there is a 'one free bite' rule. What this means is that the owner is judged to not have had reason to suspect their dog would bite someone. But those rules change drastically once your dog has bitten someone. In addition, you will be expected to take immediate steps to correct the animals' behavior or face losing your insurance.
Unfortunately, there is some more bad news. There is no cover policy for dog bit insurance. Your only recourse is to have homeowner's or renter's policy to cover any liability. However, if your dogs bite someone your insurance company may request the following, but not limited to: charge a higher premium, they may exclude the dog from coverage or they may not renew the policy.
Perhaps it is better to deal with your dog's aggression and biting instinct before things get out of hand and you lose your homeowner's insurance. Contrary to what the tabloid press would have you believe, dogs do not bite for any reason.
Make sure everyone is treating the dog affectionately so that he becomes accustomed to being around humans. This should drastically reduce the chance of dog biting during periods of high stress for the dog, such as when strangers visit.
Dog biting might seem cute while they are still puppies, but it can lead to serious problems later on, especially if something unfortunate happens with a stranger or guest to your house. Therefore, it is really important that you keep them from biting, as even a harmless playful bite can seriously scare children and adults alike.
One simple exercise that will help you prevent your dog from biting is to expose your dog to different types of situations, places and people. This way the dog will get used to new situations and it will help not to get nervous at the sight of a stranger or place.
For peace of mind, check that your homeowner's policy provides dog bite insurance. Work with your dog to stop the biting habits. And, remember you have to have patience. You can either go about this by socializing your pet with other dogs or by making sure chew toys are available but whatever method you use, be patient. - 20511
