The little, round, fluffy and innocent- looking dog that bears many brands and title to its name on both print and TV ads is none other than the famous Pomeranian. Also called Pom or Pom Pom, this dog is one of American Kennel Club's top 15 most popular breeds of the past 10 years. Although considered mostly as a companion dog, this creature is also making a name in the agility, obedience competition and tricks performance field.
There are paintings, pottery and sculptures that suggest that the Pomeranian's ancestors hailed from Egypt. Overtime, it was transported to Pomerania, an old European region now situated between Germany and Poland. In this region the then 20 pounds Pomeranian became better-coated and better-equipped as a city dweller.
Today, this breed weighs 3 to 7 pounds and the credit goes to the English people who developed the Pomeranian breed to be much smaller and colorful. When it became tiny and recognizable as a toy dog, it gained popularity all over Europe through the ardent fascination of Queen Charlotte and Princess Victoria. Famous personalities are said to have an affinity to the breed and such people are Marie Antoinette, Mozart and Emile Zola to name a few.
Today, the Pomeranian is grouped in to the toy dog category and belongs to the spitz type of breed. In many counties all throughout Europe, this dog is known as the Zwergspitz, a German word for dwarf spitz. Additionally, the Pomeranian name came from the Slavic root word Pomorze or Pomern meaning "along the sea".
Many breeders described the face of their Pomeranians to be fox-like, baby-doll or pansy faced but altogether, this dog has bright, almond- shaped, inquisitive eyes. Its plush fluff looks absolutely endearing and generally appears as white, black, brown, orange, sable, wolf, or white with colored markings. This breed is also made distinct by its lusciously fluffy and curled- towards-its- back tail.
The original Pomeranian used to weigh 20 to 30 pounds but through the Mendelean breeding technique, breeders were able to decrease its size to 3 to 7 pounds. This breed may also live up to 12 or 19 years given that it is kept healthy. To achieve its prime health, it is important to give this little dog a dose of daily walks in order to keep it fit and sane.
The Pomeranian is innately friendly, playful and energetic; eager to learn and please its master and very loyal. These qualities make it a superb competitor in dog sport competitions and tricks performance. Unlike other toy dogs who constantly crave for attention and companionship, the Pomeranian is quite independent and can keep itself busy through curiosity, alertness and intelligence.
Caring for this beautifully long and double coated breed needs frequent brushing, regular dental checkups and daily ear and nose cleaning. The Pomeranian is a frequent shedder therefore those who have allergies will have to pass up in owning this breed. More importantly, this dog is suitable for apartment living and although active indoors, does not solely rely on a wide spaced area to be healthy and busy. - 20511
