During dog shows and competitions, dogs are closely examined to see if they possess the criteria that are common to its breed standard. These fun and exciting events are commonly organized by kennel clubs and breed clubs. Examining specific breeds is only done at specialty shows.

Judging is based on the standards set prior to the show by the judges of the show. Matching the set standards laid out for the show is an extremely tough task as the judgment is totally subjective. While comparing one dog with another, the dog is also compared to the judge's image of an ideal dog which meets the breed standard almost perfectly. The dog show is organized to find a dog that most closely matches the standards required.

The judges are totally responsible for drawing up the conformation point based on along list of breed standards. Conformation points can vary from one competition to another, but there are certain prerequisites that are general. The fur is the most important factor observed, over and above the pet's color, pattern, length, type and quality. The layout, quality and quantity of the markings are also viewed carefully.

Healthy skin with no pigmentation is also one of the important criterions with the shape and color of the head also taken into consideration. Then judges will also take into consideration the general attitude and temperament of each breed of dogs. A beautiful jaw-line and perfect structure and alignment of the teeth when the jaw is closed will contribute greatly to the judges' decision.

The shape and color of the eyes and the shape and set of the ears, including the ratio of the length and height are also compared. The style of walk and gait in addition to the shape of the feet and tail are closely scrutinized to determine if the dog is carefully trained and groomed. It is necessary to register the name of the participating dog, breeder and breeder kennel to facilitate identification.

Since every dog has a registered name and a call name, during the competition, the kennel club calls the dog by its registered name while the owner refers to it by its call name. Competitors participating in the many dog shows at these distinct levels come from different parts of the country. The hierarchical nature of the competition qualifies only dogs that have won at each competition to enter the next competition.

The hierarchical nature of the competitions enables the champion to be selected from dogs that have already won championship in other shows and thus ensure that only the best in the breed will be chosen. Since the dog shows are known to select the best dog in the breed, the prices of the puppies of champions get a surprisingly high price.
