Learn Standard Concepts For Training a Puppy

Learn Standard Concepts For Training a Puppy

A dog's personality and disposition may be very crucial to his dog training. Your dog may respond better to various training techniques based upon his or her personality. And of course, some dogs have more challenging personalities and some dogs are just smart and easygoing. But there are a few concepts in dog training that work with any dog.

Timing is critical when you are training a dog. We may attribute human characteristics to our dogs but dogs are not human and they do not understand human concepts. That means that if you want to correct your dog for pooping on the floor you must catch him in the act. If you find the mess later and try to correct him then he will have no clue why he is being scolded and your correction will be useless.

Next you have to be consistent. You cannot allow you dog to do things in some situations but not in others. You can't let your dog jump on you when you are wearing jeans but not allow him to jump on you when you are wearing a business suit. You can't allow your dog to chew an old shoe and not expect him to chew a new shoe. With a dog it is all or nothing. A dog does not comprehend the idea of "sometimes".

Corrections and praise are both important. Dogs tend to learn quicker and easier when they get love and praise so make sure that you are letting your dog know when he is doing something right. Sometimes owners will do more corrections but praise and corrections are equally crucial.

You must be decisive and firm with your dog. When you give him a command he must obey. If he does not follow through then show him but when you speak he must obey every time. A dog does not understand the idea of "sometimes".

Make training fun. You can always play games and have some fun while you are teaching and he is learning. Both of you will appreciate and enjoy it and the bond between you will grow.

Be fair and reasonable with your dog. He needs to clearly know exactly what you want. You can break up your training times into smaller parts if that will help but it is critical that he clearly comprehends what he is expected to do. He can't please you if he doesn't know how.

You are responsible for how well trained your dog is. Any dog can be trained; it is up to the trainer to work with them as necessary. - 20511
