The Air of Importance that Surrounds the Elegant and Shiny Yorkshire terriers

The Air of Importance that Surrounds the Elegant and Shiny Yorkshire terriers

by James Reddinger

The popular and favorite of millions Yorkshire terrier is little in size but definitely big in confidence and intelligence. Train it to do a task and teach it to obey, and it will do so gladly; it figures out things on its own, too, so this breed is not to be treated as less smart. Their affectionate and playful disposition is a perfect match for children and when you show these creatures love, they will show love in return.

Weighting only 3.2 kg or 7lbs, the Yorkshire terrier still manages to carry out an innate air of confidence and regal manner. Being a terrier, it is intrinsically courageous, energetic, protective, and is great in hunting. As a lovable pet for the family, it brings nothing but pure joy and bliss.

This breed looks magnificent in a draping floor-length silky, fine, glossy, and straight hair. Its common and widely accepted coat colors are blue and tan and they are spread all over the body, with blue mostly painted on its back; this pattern matches the expression "tan with blue saddle on the back". There are other combinations of colors and patterns that appears in some Yorkshire terriers but mostly they are not accepted by the kennel clubs.

Hailing originally from Yorkshire, England; the Yorkshire terrier or Yorkie is actually of Scottish descent. In the mid-1800's, some Scotland natives reached Yorkshire in search for jobs. With them were several breeds of small terriers and it is said that these are the ascendants of the modern day Yorkie.

Accordingly, the breed came from three different dogs namely, Old Crab a male dog, Kitty a female dog, and another female dog with an unknown name. As the Scotts paved their way into the cotton and wool mill workforce, so did the Yorkies catching vermin and rats of the place. Because of the breed's inclination to the working class, they weren't regarded as high then; scornful comments were actually made regarding their silky and rich fur as the product of the looms.

It wasn't long, however, when the world couldn't resist its charm anymore; upper class families started taking them in as pets and its fame spread all over Europe quickly. Since then, the admiration, pampering and privileges never ended; these favors for the Yorkie are prevalent and obvious up to now. The Yorkies first came to the United States in 1872 and by 1878, the first Yorkie was registered to the American Kennel Club.

The common Yorkie has a fine and absolute straight hair but there are those who have a wooly, cottony, and overly fine textured coats as well. Unlike the silky straight haired Yorkies, the differently textured ones are difficult to care for. In general, the Yorkies only need daily brushing and a bath every month in order to keep their beautiful manes at their absolute best.

The Yorkshire terrier breed is listed among the toy dogs group although there are some who argue that they still be placed in the terrier category. Additionally, this breed is also considered as hypoallergenic and so most people, especially children, are suited to have them. Their hairs are not prone to shedding and would only fall out when brushed or when intentionally broken. - 20511
