Learn How To Control Your Dogs Excessive Barking

Learn How To Control Your Dogs Excessive Barking

by Kevin Lynch

All dogs bark at times. It is their primary mode of communication but when a dog barks excessively it is frustrating for everyone. Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times.

There are quite a few reasons why a dog will bark excessively. If your dog is bored because he stays in the house or the same yard everyday he may start barking to entertain himself. Dogs enjoy social stimulation and interacting with others. Try to incorporate more playtimes or go for more walks. This may help your dog if he is barking excessively out of boredom.

Dogs will bark when they feel nervous or scared. Some dogs never get properly socialized and therefore the slightest thing can scare them. While you are training your dog take him to many different places and have him be around a variety of people. Reward him when he is quiet and well behaved. A food treat will do wonders to keep him calm in different places and different situations. Soon he will start associating being quiet and well behaved with the treat and this will work amazingly well towards his excessive barking under these conditions.

Dogs will bark when they are wanting something from you. However, while you want your dog to communicate with you, you also do not want this type of barking to become a bad habit. If you always respond to his barking he will always continue to bark. Try to get him to communicate with you in other ways by rewarding and praising him for other behaviors. Otherwise you will just train him to bark.

Sometimes your dog will bark excessively because you have left home and you are not with him. This barking from separation anxiety is disruptive to the neighbors and others so it is smart to try to eliminate it. Start when he is a puppy and crate him when you leave so he learns to be content in his own space. Also never make a big deal out of leaving home but rather just sneak away quietly. He may never know that you are gone and if he does he will not be so vocal about it.

Dogs bark when they want to protect the people that they love. This is most often considered to be a good thing unless your dog is barking excessively to protect you from the mailman (or mail person!) every single day! In that case try to distract your dog with a treat or some playtime. You can also introduce your dog to the mailman. If he becomes friendly with the people who come by most often then he is less likely to bark excessively. If your dog barks to protect you though, you should be thankful as someday you may find yourself in a circumstance where you need that.

There are many ways to help stop excessive barking. You can hire a professional dog trainer that can offer you some tips. Oftentimes more socialization and more playtimes will help him to bark less. One thing to keep in mind though is that most often your dog is barking for a reason. Find out what that reason is and then deal with it.

Dogs who only bark at proper times are much less frustrating than dogs that bark excessively. Start training your dog away from excessive barking while he is still a pup and when he is all grown up you will know when he barks he has a good reason. - 20511
