If your dog jumps up on you it is most likely out of excitement, something that commonly happens when dog owners arrive home. Jumping dos can be a real danger however, especially when they jump on children who may be the same size as them.

Luckily, learning how to stop dogs jumping is fairly easy and you should be able to control your dogs jumping in no time.

There are quite a few reasons that a dog may jump on you or your visitors, one of the main one is to let you know that he is the king of the castle. He may jump on furniture or up on your guest to tell them that the leader of the pack is him and you have entered his domain. In this case the dog can even become very aggressive with your visitors as well.

Jumping up is sometimes a way that dogs greet people. This is one of the other main causes of jumping. It's fine that your dog wants to greet you but jumping up on a persons chest is not ok.

Yet another reason for jumping may be because they got a reward at some time or another for a feat such as this. He may have received extra attention for jumping or told to come up here by one of the children. There are numerous reasons but when rewards are given the dog usually will continue to repeat this activity in hopes that they will receive that same reward.

An easy way to stop your dog jumping up on you when you arrive home is keep things as relaxed as possible - don't make a big deal of arrive home. If your dog keeps jumping up on you anyway, squirt a little water into your dogs face. This shows your dog that you are the boss and this behaviour is not accepted.

Another way you can stop the jumping is by coming down to your dog's level to greet him upon arrival home. Doing this allows your dog to greet you properly without jumping up and also give your dog the attention it was after.

Don't play rough with your dog. Even though this can be fun, doing it shows your dog that you are allowing rough behaviour and even encouraging it. You will also be confusing your dog as it will have no idea when, where, and with whom, rough play is allowed.

When your dog is getting way out of hand, you need to put more emphasis on training your dog. Be firm with your dog on a consistent basis and teach the basic commands to your dog again. The "Sit", and "Off" commands are good to start with. - 20511
