Taking care of a new dog can sometimes be an overwhelming job. As a dog owner, it is your job to make sure you keep your pet healthy. Here are some pet care tips that can help you carry out this task.
" The Veterinarian is Your Partner in Care
One of your jobs as a pet owner is to know when it is appropriate to call the vet. In general, if you are concerned about your dog's health, it's better to call rather than take a "wait and see" approach. While this sometimes works out alright, it's better to be safe than sorry. Your vet can properly diagnose your dog, and provide appropriate treatment when necessary.
There are a number of situations when you must call your vet:
a) Make sure to call the vet if your dog has been in an accident. Get him to the closet emergency animal hospital if you can't reach your vet.
b) If you think your dog has eaten something poisonous or inedible, call your vet right away.
c) Call the veterinarian immediately if your pet is obviously distressed.
d) Take your dog to the vet if you notice sudden weight loss or gain.
e) You should call your vet right away if your dog is coughing, vomiting, or having convulsions.
" Learn to Prevent Health Problems
Remember that the vet is the last line of defense. It's better to prevent your dog from getting sick or injured in the first place, whenever possible.
Be aware that just like humans, dogs need healthy food and physical activity to enjoy a long life. Feed your dog a balanced diet, and make sure he exercises regularly so that he builds strength and has a strong immune system. Keep a close eye on his diet, and clean his dog house or crate regularly to eliminate bacteria that may cause illness. Provide him with a constant supply of clean and healthy water.
Ensure that your dog is on a leash, a chain, or inside a fenced yard at all times. If you let your pet wander around the neighborhood, he will be vulnerable to accidents and injuries.
Give your dog regular baths. You don't want your pet to suffer the discomfort of ticks or fleas, which can also carry diseases.
Keeping your dog healthy involves more than the few tips provided here. While this is an excellent start, it's always a good idea to ask your vet for specific tips and pointers for your dog. As your pet grows, you'll learn the best strategies for keeping your pooch safe and healthy. Above all, remember that it's always better to be safe than sorry. - 20511
