Dog Pregnancy

Dog Pregnancy

If you want to be really good friends with your dog then you must learn to understand it. The dog, being a pack animal, has a given place in the social order of a pack, and this order is maintained by means of various signs and signals. Observe your dog carefully and notice its posture (the position of the individual parts of its body). For example, the ears are held in one way when the dog is fawning on its owner, hut in a different way when it sees or senses something suspicious, and in a different way again when attacking.

As a rule it is not necessary to help the bitch during whelping; she should do everything herself, Bitches of breeds with an undershot bite (e.g. Pekingese, French Bulldog, Bulldog, Boxer, etc.) sometimes have difficulty in freeing a pup from the amniotic sac and biting off the umbilical cord. In such a case you must come to the bitch's aid. Free the pup and cut the umbilical cord with sterilised scissors. Always have your vet's telephone number on hand. If no puppy has emerged within six hours of the beginning of whelping, it means there is some complication that only a vet can attend to. If the contractions cease, dead puppies might be retained within the hitch. Here, too, the vet can come to her aid - usually an injection of the hormone produced by the pituitary gland will start the contractions again.

Everybody knows what it means when a dog wags its tail or when it tucks it between its legs. The most important gestures for self-preservation in a pack are the gestures of superiority and subordination. Even in the roughest of fights, if one dog shows a sign of subordination, the fight will usually be over. Members of the same species do not usually fight to the death. For the victor it is usually enough for its adversary to admit its position of inferiority. In the wild there are very few exceptions to this rule - of which the human being, unfortunately, is one.

The most suitable time to take the bitch to the dog is usually between the ninth and thirteenth day of this period. The exact time depends not only on the age of the bitch but also varies according to the individual. The bitch is always taken to the dog for mating and not the other way round. (In a strange environment a dog is often more interested in his surroundings than in a bitch.)

After the dog has mounted the bitch the two remain locked in position for some time because the dog's penis is swollen and can only be withdrawn from the vagina after it has returned to its normal size. Pregnancy lasts 58-65 days - you can count on an average of 63 days. Twenty days after mating the fertilised eggs become embedded in the lining of the womb and the placentas through which they receive nourishment are formed.

In the sixth week give the puppies oatmeal or rice gruel together with ground or finely minced meat and vegetables. By the seventh week or at the latest the eighth week, the puppies should already be accustomed to solid food and the mother will stop nursing altogether. In breeds where the standard specifies that the tail be docked it is necessary to ask your vet to do this when the puppies are only two or three days old. - 20511
