How to Stop Dogs from Dog Pulling on the Leash?

How to Stop Dogs from Dog Pulling on the Leash?

by Craig Clemins

Dogs love to roam free, that's one of the reason that they so often try to escape. When walking your dog, don't be surprised if he is pulling on the leash, dragging you along, this behaviors often stems from your dogs desire to run free. At first you might find the behavior cute but after 5 minutes it will become very irritating. Sometimes after enough pulling, the leash holding the dog can actually snap. If this happens your dog could place itself in real danger and cause some problems in your neighborhood.

Sometimes dogs pull on the leash because they are overly excited. When this is the case, a simple thing you can do to calm them down is to simply stop walking. Wait a couple of minutes and then continue on your way. Give your dog an opportunity to calm down and he will be much more relaxed. You might find your dog pulling on the leash if it wants to confront another dog. This comes from your dog wanting to show dominance, so the simple way to solve this problem is for you to show your dog that you are the dominant one.

You'll need to teach your dog that you are the leased and that he must be calm and walk with you when on the leash. A good way to do this is to teach your dog to sit when he has the leash on. Be firm and calm when giving this command and don't walk anywhere until your dog has followed your instructions. By doing this you will teach your dog that unless he follows your orders, he won't be able to walk anywhere.

If your dog tries to run of ahead of you, give the leash a gentle pull. Command your dog to sit and don't continue until he has complied with your command. Repeat this gentle tug and sit command until your dog understands. If your dog simply isn't learning the lesson or isn't following your commands, return to you house and wait for you dog to calm down before taking him out again.

Making yourself seen as the leader is the best way to control your dog while walking. You can do this by stopping multiple times throughout the walk and making your dog sit each time your stop. Try to do this at least 5 - 6 times each time you go for a walk. By doing this your dog will realize that you are the leader and he will follow your commands.

If you find that your dog is following your instruction to the letter then he should also be rewarded in a gentle way that does not include too much fanfare. By simply letting him know, that while you are happy with him, you are still the leader of the pack. - 20511
