Learn More about Your Treeing Walker Coonhound

Learn More about Your Treeing Walker Coonhound

by Albert Barkley

The Treeing Walker Coonhound gained recognition as an independent dog breed in the mid 1940s. The breed is an offshoot of the Tennessee Lead, a dog whose origins cannot be traced, and the Walker Hound. It is a direct descendant of the English Foxhounds imported by Thomas Walker of Virginia in 1974.

The foxhounds were said to have been imported to Virginia in Walker's attempt to establish the infamous foxhunting tradition of the Englishmen in the New World. However, foxhunting did not become a tradition until a few years later. Treeing Walker Coonhounds chase and catch raccoons, roof rats, squirrels, skunks, opossums, bobcats, cougars, and even bears.

Coonhounds are born hunters. When trained well, they will learn to howl in a distinctive manner that will tell its human hunting companion that their prey has been cornered and that the chase is almost over. Because hunting is natural to them, they can be really good at it but they cannot be the best urban or suburban companions.

Although dogs of this breed are unstoppable and seem to never get tired, they are totally efficient and naturally affectionate. Treeing Walker Coonhounds love warm climates and are naturally athletic so they fancy swimming and running around. Because they are one with the other breed of dogs that are remarkably agile, you will almost never find them sunbathing or lying around to take naps.

Average people would often mistake Walker Coonhounds for oversized beagles. Their shoulders are sturdy, legs lean and straight; their coats are of two or three colors and are typically short and smooth. Body width is usually at 20-28 inches and weight is at around 50-70 pounds and their ears are larger than their heads.

Coonhounds become restless when they lack physical and mental exercise. Owners thus have to make time taking them to walks or to a dog park where they can play and run around. Because they are lovers of the outdoor and outdoor activities, they are not very suitable for life in apartments.

Training Walker Coonhounds are good companions aside from being excellent working and hunting dogs. Although they are fast learners and can catch tricks and routines through examples, they can ignore their trainers to follow their noses at times. As scent hounds, they have an excellent sense of smell and they have distinctive howls so they can be easily identified by their owners.

These dogs rarely develop complicated health issues and can live up to 12 to 13 years. Although they need only minimal grooming, owners should make sure that they are able to take occasional baths. To prevent infection, their ears should be cleaned and checked regularly. - 20511

Jack Russell Training Tips that Work

Jack Russell Training Tips that Work

by Andyl Hannerl

Another popular choice for a family pet is the Jack Russell terrier. Not only are they the family pet choice, they are also the breed of choice in television and movies. This type of dog may be tiny, but it has a mighty will and tendency is, if its not properly trained, he will run your household.

If you have decided that this breed is the right pet for you, it will be important to commit to plenty of Jack Russell training to ensure your dog accepts you as the head of the house.

Be sure that as soon as your pet comes home, training should start already and should continue until your dog learns the basic commands and when he treats your family with respect. Here are some tips for Jack Russell training that will help you make your dog provide joy to your family.

Be Consistent

The Jack Russell terrier is a very intellectual animal but the only thing that you need to look out for is the attitude that goes along with their being smart. This can be a drawback in Jack Russell training. The terrier can sometimes go against their owners authority even after learning the house rules. And this is why you will need to stay consistent with your dog. Give him the proper punishment if he disobeys a rule at the same time give him praises when he obeys your orders.

Remember that the house rules should be consistent at all times to keep your dog in his position. And yes, you will need a lot of time and tolerance in training them, but they will eventually surrender to your authority.

Natural Instincts

This type of breed has the instincts to hunt. And there will be times that if they see your family cat they will be provoked to attack it. There will also be times that he will take off his yard if he smells something interesting. These are things that are not trainable and will need the owners precautionary measures to keep them in control. This would mean keeping your dog on a leash when walking them and making sure that they are very confined when at home or when they are left on the yard.

They are the type of dogs who normally digs, and because of this, it would be best if you check your yard timely to ensure that your pup is not digging his own escaper hole. It would also be ideal if you do not have any cats or small pets in the same house as it is not a guarantee that your pet will not hunt your other pets on occasion.

Although Jack Russell training may take more patience and time than training other breed of dogs, you will be sure to have great rewards after. These terriers are loaded with great personality, intellect and are super loyal to their owners and with proper training, they will surely delight and entertain your family for a long time. - 20511

Choices For Finding A Vets In Ireland

Choices For Finding A Vets In Ireland

by Dave Jones

Your dog or cat is a cherished family member. So is your parrot or macaw. You want them to receive the best possible medical care. That's why it's so important to select the right vet to treat their ailments and provide their regular checkups. The good news is that choosing a vet in Ireland doesn't have to be an overwhelming task.

This is because pet owners in Ireland can work with a vet who is a member of the Veterinary Council of Ireland. The council sets rules of care and a list of that every member vet in Ireland must follow. That's why when you're searching for a vet for your beloved pets you'll want to work with a vet who is a member of the Veterinary Council of Ireland.

Members of the Veterinary Council of Ireland are required to take continuing veterinary education classes every year. These classes focus on how vets can provide the best care to their animal patients. Every vet in Ireland who is a member has to pass tests to receive credit for this continuing education.

For the health of your pets, then, you should always ask the veterinarians you are considering if they belong to the Veterinary Council of Ireland. Don't take the chance of working with vets who haven't taken classes on the latest in veterinary science.

Of course, membership in the council, while important, is just one of the many factors that you should consider when selecting the vet for your pets. You also want to make sure that your pet isn't afraid of the vet that you are considering. You want your pet's vet visit to be as low-stress as possible, so your pet needs to be comfortable, not nervous, around whichever vet you select.

Secondly, make sure to ask the vets you interview for references. Then call these references. It's the best way to gauge exactly how a vet treats the animals that he or she sees.

Finally, don't forget to ask some key questions: You'll want to know how long the vets you interview have been practicing. You'll also want to find out how much experience they have in working with your particular pet or breed. The answers vets give you will help you decide which are right for you and your pet.

Choosing a vet in Ireland doesn't have to be an overwhelming experience. It just takes a bit of time and research. But with just some basic homework, you will find the one vet who is perfect for your pet. - 20511

Dog Care Options For Busy Lifestyles

Dog Care Options For Busy Lifestyles

by Jacob Fisher

In the past twenty years, pet owners have been pampering their pets in a variety of ways. So, a number of interesting developments have taken place in this area so that pets can be treated to the best of care and services. You may not find a suitable choice for your pet, but there's no harm in looking at the important changes that are happening in the field of pet care.

Doggie day care centers do precisely that, they care for dogs during the day. A typical pet owner is part of today's busy lifestyle. Pet owners may not be able to take out time from their tight schedules to be with their animal companions. Leaving the pet unattended in the house each day is not a pleasing idea for the pet's owner.

A doggie day care center is similar to a day care center meant for children. There are various levels of pet care services available which the pet owner can pay for according to his preference. Increasing demand for dog care services has given rise to numerous doggie day care centers in some cities.

A number of dog-friendly hotels have been opened recently. More and more pets are traveling with their owners. Traveling on business trips or vacations along with your pet is a widespread phenomenon. Hotels making special arrangements for pets belonging to business travelers are increasing in number.

Hotels meant especially for pets are coming up at various places. Apart from catering to doggies, these hotels are now looking after other kinds of pets too. Pet hotels or improvised kennels are used by pet owners to house their pets in the best possible place in case they want to go away on a trip.

Pet spas are now a fact of life. There is nothing your pet would enjoy better than a day at the spa. From the best grooming to the tastiest food, a pet spa is like finding heaven on earth for your pet. Sending your dog to a pet spa for the ultimate pampering does not come cheap so you might have to shell out a hefty fee. Before you decide to spend the money for your doggie's day at a spa, you must make sure that there is something on offer at the spa that it will enjoy.

Instead of the pet spa, your dog may enjoy the simpler pleasures of playing with his doggie friends, so you could take him to the dog park close to your home. More and more dog parks are being built in large cities and towns. If entertainment experts are to be believed, in five years from now, we will find dog parks everywhere. - 20511

Fixing Dog Behavior Problems

Fixing Dog Behavior Problems

by Andyl Hannerl

When getting or buying a new puppy for your home, you will need to address all training issues that are foreseen. Yes, puppies can be very charming and cute, but if you wont be able to fix any of the certain behaviors that they have on the onset, chances are your puppy will grow up with a lot of disparaging behaviors which may be harder to fix when they become adults.

There are very simple solutions to many of these problem behaviors, and if the training starts as soon as the puppy enters the household, many of the presenting problems will not even manifest, since they were addressed the first couple of times that they occurred.

Issues

A lot of people or dog owners usually go to professional dog trainers to help them address the dog behavior problems they have with their pets. One of the behaviors that is common among dogs is their excessive barking which is considered a problem.

A lot of dogs have the inclination to bark at almost everything that they see and encounter "it can be a noise, another dog or animal, a person or just for the sake of having fun. Not only is barking annoying to owners, it can also affect the neighbors especially those who live in a condominium or an apartment.

Another example of a dog behavior problem is when dogs dig in the yard. Once digging has started, it is going to be more difficult to stop this behavior and can even cause damages and a lot of safety precautions if not fixed.

Not only will digging destroy flower beds and destroy gardens, it can also create holes in the yard which can be very insightful. Also, if dogs create holes somewhere near the fence, they will have the tendency of escaping and it can be harmful to your pet.

Having a lot of animal pets in the house can also be a reason for having the dog behavior problem known as food aggression. Dogs being territorial, they will be very protective of their food from the other animals around the house. They have a tendency of snapping at the other animals of chase them away from their food bowl. If this is the scenario, this can be very dangerous as they might start having a fight and if you have toddlers at home, the behavior can be acted upon them if they are in the area. Another common aggression is between two male neutered dogs.

Some other dog behavior problems are, thieving issues, chewing problems, separation anxiety, whining and running away which can also be considered as aggression problems. - 20511

The Necessary Gear You'll Require For Your New Puppy

The Necessary Gear You'll Require For Your New Puppy

by Michelle R Clark

It is always fun to get a new puppy but it will be easier if you have a few of the things that you need on hand before he comes back home. You will want to begin schooling him right away to be a fine puppy resident and a valued member of your family. It is easier if you have the equipment that you need on hand.

There is an plenty of things that you can get for your new puppy. Some of these things are functional and useful to have and others are not really necessary.

Probably the most notable thing that you will require is a crate. Dogs like to have their own space that is snug and comfy just for them. All of your instruction will be easier if you employ a crate. Get one that is the accurate size for your puppy. If you take your puppy with you in the automobile very often you may want to get two.

You will also need a collar and a leash. Get at least one collar that fits well and then you can get special training collars later. One six-foot leash that feels nice in your hand is also needed.

Plan what your puppy will eat and get some food and water dishes. Stainless steel is generally best. Try to find out what brand of food your puppy has been used to eating and get enough of that for at least a few weeks. All dietetic changes should be made gradually.

In order to be ready to start your training without delay you will need to have some soft treats to reward your puppy and also some type of aversive. An aversive will discourage your dog from unmanageable activities as it is something that is entirely harmless but your dog doesn't like it and will do everything he can to circumvent it. A clicker that makes a noise or a squirt bottle that squirts water are examples of diverse types of an aversive.

Young puppies need to chew until they get a bit larger so you will want to have some chew toys on hand. Start out with just a few until you know what your puppy likes. Same with other toys do not load up on toys until you know your puppy's individuality.

When you are prepared you will be able to have more pleasure with your puppy, training him to stroll on a leash and play. All of your training will be easier also if you are set. - 20511

Learn More About Dog Allergies With Our Tips

Learn More About Dog Allergies With Our Tips

by Jamie Eve

Dog allergies result in uncontrollable itching, and forcing the dog to lick and scratch himself until sores develop on his body. These sores can grow to be infected, accumulate pus and become very agonizing. With persistent attacks, some dogs eventually end up with their hair falling out. By giving regular bath to the dog with cold water and shampoo, this allergy can be arrested.

Some dogs experience watery eyes which has home remedy. Cotton ball, some boric acid, ophthalmic solution, some Visine moisturizing eye drops and a wash cloth would be adequate. Wet the cotton ball in the boric acid solution, and with very light strokes, wipe across the centre of the eye from the inner corner to the outer corner along the eye lids when they are closed. This will lessen the suffering.

Common Labrador allergic diseases are ear infection. Ear infections will make the dog miserable. What makes this worse is that dogs have a heightened sense of hearing and an untreated ear infection can cause hearing loss. The finest way to circumvent Labrador allergies that result in ear infections is to dry the dog's ears after bathing and frequently clean its ears with a cleaning solution in consultation with a veterinarian.

Some dogs suffer from skin atrophy as well. The skin is almost affected more badly than muscle. Symptoms are reddening, hair loss, blisters, and skin ulceration. Slowly, the affected skin becomes scarred. Treatment can be given by a composition comprising at least one thyroid hormone compound together with a pharmacologically adequate base suite for topical purpose. Faces get swollen due to infection, allergic reaction, acetaminophen toxicity, hematoma, cancer, muscle inflammation. Countless dogs with allergies rub their faces on the ground after eating, grind their feet, rub themselves along fence or will roll on rough ground to scratch their backs. As a result of the allergy, they may also develop bacterial or yeast infections of the skin. Such skin allergies can be naturally cured. Feed the puppy a nutritious diet and practice an exercise program apt for the dog.

Few important oils which are prescribed for such allergies are Bergamot for ear infections; Carrot Seed for dry, flaky, sensitive skin which is prone to infection; Cedarwood for skin and coat conditioning and dermatitis of all types; Chamomile for skin irritations, allergic reactions, burns; Clary Sage for nerve calming and nervous system sedation; Geranium for skin irritations, fungal ear infections; Ginger for motion sickness, aids digestion; Lavender for many common animal ailments; Helichrysum for healing of scars and bruises and effective for pain relief; Niaouli for ear infections and skin problems caused by allergies; Peppermint for arthritis, dysplasia, sprains and strains.

Most of the pet danders set in motion allergies and asthma, leaving no breed completely safe. All dogs create dander, yet there are some breeds which create less than others. Miniature Schnauzers are affected by sick sinus syndrome. Fainting is the main symptom. It is characterized by sinoatrial node dysfunction and often includes atrioventricular node disease and bundle branch block. The major sign is fainting. There are four types of dog allergies. These include airborne allergies (atopy), flea allergies, food allergies and contact allergies. - 20511

The Quiet and Reliable Sled Dog of the Last Frontier, The Alaskan Malamute

The Quiet and Reliable Sled Dog of the Last Frontier, The Alaskan Malamute

by Terrence Clark

In 1896, when the Klondike Gold Rush hit the new world, settlers and prospectors hired and took in this large type of breed to carry their heavy loads and valuables to and fro a destination. This breed is the Alaskan Malamute, a quiet and calm breed that was once a dependable companion of the Mahlemuits tribe of upper western Alaska. For centuries, the tribesmen and this breed lived side by side hunting, working and surviving the cold surroundings of the north.

The Malamute is considered as a large breed and it was originally developed to perform the tasks of sledding and pulling some heavy baggage across far distances. People who have tried traveling with this breed attest to its impeccable strength, stamina and endurance on going over long distances, all the while pulling humans and loads. Today, when people look for a Malamute, they look for its sledding ability first before inspecting its other less important abilities.

Even to this day, the Malamute is still used heavily for sled traveling and load freighting. However, the uses of this breed now extends to games such as mushing, skijoring, bikejoring and canicross. It is also beginning to have a reputation as an excellent pet and show dog among breeders and families.

On the issues of speed, the Malamute does not come first as there are speedier breeds than it. It can haul heavy loads across great distances but only at a slower pace. Four Malamutes are said to be enough to carry loads as heavy as thousands of pounds at short distances.

Often, the Malamute is mistaken for a Siberian Husky but upon closer inspection, one will realize that they have distinct dissimilarities in so many ways. Moreover, the Malamute tends to give off a "talking" quality of vocals which is called the "woo-woo". This sound is the inspiration behind Chewbacca's voice, a Star Wars character, due to the fact that George Lucas once owned a Malamute named Indiana.

Unlike other large breeds, the Malamute is rather quiet and not much of a yapper. It does not, however, do well in heeding the master's commands but it is nonetheless friendly with all humans especially children. This breed is wary of other animals especially those that are smaller in size that's why owner's should be well aware of this instinct.

Considered as a large breed of dog, the Malamute should weigh 75 to 85 pounds and stand 23 to 26 inches. It has a dense double coat which serves as a protection from the harsh climates and a densely fur-covered tail which it uses to wrap its nose and face as protection from heavy blowing snows. The Malamute comes in colors of gray and white, sable and white, black and white, red and white, or pure white.

Trendy Dog Names

Trendy Dog Names

by Marion Jones

Fashion seems to decree everything these days. From what you wear to what you call your dog, everything you do is decreed by the need to be fashionable. Cute dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because as soon as something is in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to choose a cool dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? So, people usually play it safe, which is why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and interrupt that cycle, five cute dog names are listed below with our reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cuter than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cool dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is based in mythology. It has a timeless quality which has somewhat surprisingly failed to boost its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cute dog names because it has so many meanings that you can have a hard time finding out where to begin. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that excels in a particular field. It is indeed a high form of praise and so is definitely a cool dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of the Disney cartoon film, Lady and the Tramp, which was a huge hit. This made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case popularity is second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cool dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is infinitely cool to name your dog after an icon who never goes out of fashion.

Shadow: There is a dark and ethereal quality about Shadow that makes it a cute dog name. It would be best used on a big breed of dog though, because it wouldn't have the same striking effect with a small breed.

Whatever cute dog names you consider for your pooch, it is a certain method of giving your dog an identity of its own and your dog memorable to others. - 20511

Various Ways You Can De-Worm Your Cat

Various Ways You Can De-Worm Your Cat

by Ferdinand Emy

Different parasitic contagions can affect your cat. Although only a few cat worms can be cured at home, it is still recommended that you take your cat to the veterinarian. In case of contact with infected cats, humans can also be affected by these infections.

Types of cat worms:

* Tapeworms: A common type of tapeworms in cats is Dipylidium Caninum. Cats infested with fleas are very apt to get tapeworms. Again cats that are involved in hunting wildlife with tapeworm is liable to be infested. Once they are inside the cat's intestine, the eggs break down and grow into adult tapeworms. When inside the cat, it attaches itself to the intestine's wall and sets out feeding on its nutrients. The tail section drops off and passes through the cat stool. These sections contain the eggs and resemble rice grains when dried.

Tapeworms cannot be treated with over-the-counter dewormers. A vet visit is a must.

* Hookworms: these are very thin and small worms which attach themselves to the wall of the cats intestine and suck blood. Cats infest hookworms through the ingestion of soil contaminated with hookworm eggs. Symptoms are bloody diarrhea, anemia, weakness and loss of stamina. Hookworms can be fatal, and can result to death if not remedied in a timely fashion.

Its cause is identified by examining stool sample of the cat.

* Roundworms: Virtually all kitties are born with roundworm larvae in their tissues. They are transmigrated from the mothers tissues right from the time the kitten was in the mothers womb. Cats can contract roundworms by consuming infected lizards, birds and bugs or also by ingesting fouled soil. The larvae migrates to the intestinal tracts and stay in the small intestine and turn into adult roundworms. The eggs are passed in the cat stool and they can re-infect the kitten, other dogs or cats, if the contaminated feces are eaten.

Roundworms can be deadly. If you see symptoms like pot belly and poor growth in your kitten, then visit the vet at once.

Precautions:

* Remove feces from the backyard on a regular basis. * De-worm your cat under veterinarian oversight. * Have the cat stool studied regularly in recurring cases. * Do not mix as they are poisonous and can be fatal and don't administer any other wormer if your cat is currently under medication. * Always visit a vet if you see any symptoms of cat worms.

You must note that all cat worms can also affect humans. And they also have great risks of re-infecting your pet. It is highly recommended to get your cat treated by a veterinarian if you see or even suspect any type of cat worms. - 20511

Japanese Chins, the Cat-Like Dogs of the Orient

Japanese Chins, the Cat-Like Dogs of the Orient

by Rebecca Roberts

This dog sports a very Oriental expression, and it's no wonder they are called Japanese Chins! According to the American Kennel Club, these regal, dignified dogs have a bright, inquisitive, alert and intelligent expression. They look very Oriental, because of their broad heads and short muzzles, feathered ears, and large, wide-set eyes.

The Japanese Chin is one of the most cat-like among the dog breeds when it comes to temperament. It uses its paws to wash or wipe its face! They also prefer to rest on high surfaces just like cats, such as chair and sofa arms, and can tiptoe across a table without disturbing the items on it.

We can trace this small and stylish animal's ancestry to the ancient Chinese and Japanese royal courts. In fact, you can probably see this royal heritage by the stately way it holds its head up high! They even look like they are wearing royal robes, with their long, shiny and straight hair, feathery tails, and heavy ruffs in the chest and ear area.

These stately little fellows come in a range of colors. They can be black and white, red and white (shades come in lemon, sable or mahogany), and tri-color. That latter combination could be black and white with tan patches and points on their faces, body and over their eyes.

Japanese chins are serene, perceptive animals. They echo their environment, meaning if your house is full of light and cheer and you have a busy, outgoing lifestyle, they will also be very friendly and social. If you have a solitary, secluded home life, they will also mirror that trait.

Another cat-like quirk they have is to climb up on things, just like their feline counterparts! They also snort or sneeze sometimes, as cats do, and cough up the occasional hairball from all the face washing! It is not a cause for alarm if they sneeze, however"it is due to their broad facial structure.

It is recommended to socialize your Japanese Chin early, so that they are more emotionally well-balanced. Although they prefer familiar surroundings, these stately little fellows adapt well to change and have even been used as therapy dogs. They love people and will bark when visitors arrive or if something out of the ordinary occurs, but otherwise they are very quiet.

Japanese Chin are also a very entertaining breed of dog, given to doing what is called the "Chin Spin"! They are generally a calm breed of dog, but it is quite endearing to see them turn in rapid circles, dancing on their hind legs and raising their front feet in the air in a "clapping" sort of motion, and some even "sing"! This sound can range from a low trill to a higher, almost soprano-like noise that sounds like "booo! - 20511

Lhasa Apsa Potty Training. Like Some Assistance?

Lhasa Apsa Potty Training. Like Some Assistance?

by Mike Davies

As you know, one of the most exciting things that most dog lovers can imagine is bringing home a lhasa apso for the first time.

Unfortunately, this excitement often wears off quickly when the new little addition to the family begins using the house as a bathroom area. Potty TrainingFortunately, with a bit of consideration and understanding of some of the basic principles of potty training a Lhasa Apso, it is easy and simple to teach your Lhasa Apso this very important behavior.

There are some points to keep in mind when planning or starting your potty training routine. No matter which method you decide to use, there will be accidents. Plan for them, accept them and move on with as little fuss and negative actions or punishment towards the puppy as possible.

Usually with any puppies, accidents are due to very small bladders and bowels and poor control as their bodies develop, very similar to young human infants in fact.

Avoid Punishing Your Lhasa Apso

Avoid punishing or reprimanding your puppy for an accident, as it is likely to be more a fault of the owner for not taking the puppy to the potty area soon enough. Learn from mistakes and keep notes on when the puppy has accidents.

Try to see if there is a pattern developing that can assist you in the training, rather than become frustrated with the Lhasa Apso. Virtually every puppy wants to make his or her owner happy, and this can be used as an effective motivator in potty training even young puppies.

The Older Dog

Older Lhasa Apsos that are being housebroken or potty trained for the first time will also have accidents, until they understand what you want. Again, patience and a positive attitude will help the training process.

Remember that dogs aren't aware of the value of antique rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting, rather they tend to relieve themselves where they feel they should - usually somewhere out of the way, like behind the couch or in the corner behind the potted palm.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Help?

YES, There are many things that pet owners can do to make potty training easy for their new dog or puppy.

Good planning, an understanding of the potty training method to be used, plus other factors such as high quality food, lots of exercise, attention and love can all have a bearing on the time that it takes to potty train your Lhasa Apso.

Finally, each dog is somewhat different in personality and temperament. Some puppies and dogs seem to almost potty train themselves where others, even from the same litter, may require additional training but will soon learn what is expected.

What method Should I Use To Potty Training My Lhasa Apso?

Well, there are a few different potty training methods that can be used for a Lhasa Apso.

Deciding on the best potty training method is important and depends a lot on the age of the dog, the time that you have to interact with the dog or puppy, your living area, and what method you are most comfortable with.

Some of the potty training methods encourage your Lhasa Apso to use an outside area to relieve themselves, whereas others focus on containing the area the puppy or dog uses inside of the house - by the use of litter boxes, potty training pads or even newspapers.

Here, we will cover one popular method, Crate Training.

CRATE TRAINING

Crate training is one of the most effective ways to potty train a Lhasa Apso as it uses the natural "denning instinct" of the dog to encourage it to keep the area that it sleeps clean and free from waste materials.

In the wild, the den is kept clean by the mother while the puppies are young. Once they are older and are able to walk, they naturally go outside of thier den or living space to relieve themselves.

In houses there are no dens, and the area is simply too large for puppies to feel that this is "their spot".

By providing a den, in the form of a crate, the puppy will learn to wait until he or she is taken outside before soiling in the crate.

Crate training does required active participation and monitoring on the part of the dog owner.

The following is a brief outline of how to complete a crate training routine:

* Purchase an appropriately sized crate, either plastic or wire, that is large enough for your Lhasa Apso to stand and stretch out comfortably.

* Make sure the crate is comfortable - use soft, washable liners or dog blankets.

* Sit with your Lhasa Apso at the door of the crate. Place a small treat inside the crate. Praise the puppy for going into the crate and getting the treat. Let the puppy come out when he or she wants, do not close the door at this time.

* Only praise for going in the crate, ignore the puppy when he or she is coming out.

* When your Lhasa Apso walks into the crate say "Crate" or "Den" or whatever word you wish to associate with going into the crate.

* When your Lhasa Apso is staying in the crate on their own to eat the treats, close the door for a few seconds, then open it up. Only praise when the dog goes in and never when it is exiting. Soon the dog realizes in is good, out is neutral.

* After the puppy or dog is fine with being in the crate for more than a few minutes, put a chew toy in with the dog to keep it occupied. Try very slowly and gradually increasing your distance away from the crate, and the time in the crate with the door closed.

* Since the puppy or dog will generally not eliminate when they are in the crate because it is their den, take them outside to eliminate when they come out of the crate.

* After feeding, crate the puppy with a chew toy. In about 10-15 minutes take the puppy out of the crate and to the designated toilet area. Do not play or interact with the puppy at this time, just take them to the spot.

* If the puppy relieves itself, praise the puppy and spend some time interacting. If, after about 3-5 minutes the puppy has not toileted, return it to the crate, again without saying anything, for an additional five minutes. Repeat the process without interacting with the puppy until it goes to the bathroom. Praise and play always follow toileting while crate training.

* At night, keep the crate in the bedroom or somewhere that you can easily hear the puppy. If he or she whines, take them to the toilet area and return them to the crate with as little interaction as possible. Just a simple "good girl" or boy will do when they toilet.

Too much praise will be seen as play, and may encourage the puppy to whine throughout the night. Remember though, the crate is only to be used until Potty Training is under control, not forever!

What Are Some Advantages of Using A Crate?

The advantages to crate training include the fact that it uses the puppies or dogs natural instincts to help with the learning process. It minimizes the dangers of messes and accidents around the house when done correctly. In addition the puppy feels secure, and they can understand what is required in a relatively short time.

What Are Some Disadvantages of Using A Crate?

Disadvantages to crate training for a lhasa apso are few, but the biggest one is that it will only work if the trainer monitors the puppy closely while in the crate, and follows the attention/inattention guidelines.

Some owners may think that crate training is cruel, but this is simply not the case. Once people understand the crate is not used as a punishment but as a safe and secure place for the puppy, they change their opinion quickly.

Need Further Help ?

I hope this short outline introduction to Potty Training and more specifically CRATE Training has been helpful to you. - 20511

Worm Loving Dogs: Learn How To Rid Your Dog Of These Worms

Worm Loving Dogs: Learn How To Rid Your Dog Of These Worms

by Ferdinand Emy

There is a general belief that ringworms are caused by worm infestation, but contrary to this, they are caused by a fungus called Dermatophytes which can affect both animals and humans. Numerous species of ringworms exist but the most noted form in dogs is Mircosporum Canis.

What are the ways of ringworms transmission to (http://imarketingbiz.net/pets) dogs?

Ringworms are infectious disease and the dogs are infected by these fungi through their surroundings such as kennel and burrows. It can also pass from rodents or other affected animals or humans and visa versa.

Found in carpets, beddings and grooming equipments, the fungal spores can dwell in the environment for virtually thirteen months. If in contact with these environs, the dogs can be infected.

Symptoms:

One of the symptoms of ringworms in dogs is an abrasion on the skin. It does not necesarily have the shape of a ring, which is unlike ringworms in humans. The hairless lesion will develop in size and form an irregular shape. Traditionally found on the face, ears, tail and paw of the dog, they may or may not be itchy, but the affected area turns reddish in colour and inflamed.

Are all dogs susceptible to ringworms?

Young puppies are more vulnerable to ringworms because their immune system has not been fully developed which is a sharp contrast to a healthy and adult dog, which is less susceptible to ringworms. Many dogs may be carriers of ringworms but may not show any sign of symptoms, but can still transfer the infection to humans and other animals.

Diagnoses and treatment of ringworms in dogs:

Dogs require to be taken to a vet for diagnosis and treatment of ringworms. Plucking hair from the infected area and analyzing it under the ultra violet light is one of the ways this diagnosis is can be carried out. If the diagnosis shows an infection, the vet will suggest anti fungal pills or topical medication like shampoos and creams.

Precautions to prevent transmission to humans and re-infection in dogs:

*Get rid of used items by the infected pet, items like brushes, scratching posts, blankets, combs etc. If some of the items cannot be destroyed, then they need to be soaked in hot water and Betadine or lodophor solution for an hour. After that, they should be washed and rinsed using water and chlorine bleach combination. Preferably dry them in open sunlight. * Vacuum the house exhaustively and immediately discard the vacuum bag. * Steam-wash all carpets and upholstery and wash the walls with water and chlorine bleach mixture. Dispose the air filter if any. * Keep kids away from infected pets and wear gloves while grooming the dog and handling any grooming equipments. In order to ensure hygienic conditions, clip the dog nails and cut the hair.

Ringworms in dogs are curable but they are extremely infectious. It also takes time for convalescence. Thus it is wise to undertake precautionary measures and visit the veterinarian timely for proper diagnosis and treatment. - 20511

Why Do Many People Prefer Purebred Dogs

Why Do Many People Prefer Purebred Dogs

by Ferd Emy Ferdinand Okeke Nnaemeka Okeke

Today, dog breeds accepted by kennel clubs abide by very strict standards. These standards are so rigid, yet so subtle, that theyre obscure for most people. Even when you go to a dog breeder, and request from him or her to let you to see his or her show quality puppies and pet quality puppies; both of which are purebreds, you will not be able to tell the difference at all.

Even those that are pet quality, purebred dogs can be pretty expensive. This is because its expensive to raise them, but also because when you purchase a purebred dog, you have a warranty about how the dog will be like when it grows up, both in physical appearance, and in personality and behaviour.

All The Same, many (http://imarketingbiz.net/products-page/pets) dog breeders do not think that the process of breeding is complete, and they strive to make new breeds by crossing purebred dogs from several breeds. These mixed dog breeds are created intenionally to obtain the optimal characteristics of the parents.

Mixed dog breeds are often unsuccessfull because some genes are recessive, while others are prevalent resulting in not being the one the breeder desired and the pups might end up with more than one bad traits from both or one of the parents. .

As a result of this, it takes many generations to produce true mixed dog breeds that will always give the same characteristics, even second, 3rd or fourth generation puppies will occasionally give nasty bewilderment by exhibiting a trait that managed to remain recessive up until that moment.

Notwithstanding, some mixed dog breeds have displayed consistency and have gone popular. Peradventure the most famous of these mixed dog breeds includes the mixing of poodles.

Mixed poodle breeds are popular due to the fact that they result in individuals with a coat that sheds very small and that make very little dander, as well as overwhelming hypoallergenic properties, which they get from their poodle parent. In addition, they get at least one good trait from the other parents breed. For instance, the Cockapoo displays the loving and cozy tendency of the Cocker Spaniel.

All The Same, despite the benefits or lineage of mixed dog breeds, big kennel clubs refuse to recognise them. This is not surprising, given how stern they are in their rules and selections. - 20511

Ways And Means To Stop Dog Aggression

Ways And Means To Stop Dog Aggression

by Andyl Hannerl

There are a lot of reasons for a dog to be aggressive towards other dogs. It can either be that the dog is fearful or nervous around another dog, it can also be that the dog is trying to be the more dominant dog, or it can be that the dog is trying to defend its territory.

The dog can also be taught to be aggressive by the owner rather than being socialized to the other dogs. Some dogs might also be protective of their masters and become aggressive in this manner, as well as becoming aggressive sexually.

Tips

One way of stopping a dog aggression is by making sure that your dog is socialized as a puppy to other animals. Puppies should be permitted to play with other dogs that are well behaved and mature.

When this happens, they will learn the proper behavior that the older dogs have. They will also see that other dogs are okay and it is not a need to protect their owner from other animals nor is it a need to fight for their territory.

When you see your dog become aggressive, you can stop dog aggression by immediately addressing the issue every time your dog does it. Never allow your dog think that this behavior is okay. You can opt to have the muzzle or the head collar only while the dog is in training to stop dog aggression but should not be the solution every time this type of problem happens.

A way to stop dog aggression is through strict training so that the dog is tuned into the instructions of the owner rather than focusing on the other animal. The dog should be trained to focus on the owner so that his attention is there and the owner can give another command to the dog, such as 'down' or 'sit' while there is another dog around.

The owner should also teach himself to control his anxious feelings and behavior, as small as it might be, so that the dog does not take a nervous cue from the owner. This can help to stop dog aggression since the dog always takes its cue from the owner.

Once your dog knows how to focus, train him to look for a treat even when theres another dog around. This can be done by throwing a treat on the ground and then telling the dog to find it at the same time distracting it from the other dog and stopping the aggression before it even begins. - 20511

Dog Training - Keys To Bringing Up An Obedient Dog

Dog Training - Keys To Bringing Up An Obedient Dog

by Andyl Hannerl

To transform a puppy into an obedient dog that your whole family will appreciate is by using proper dog training techniques. Dogs, like kids, need to know and understand the rules of the house and will need to respect their owners.

A lot of pet owners fall in love with a scruffy, cute face puppy at the pet store or the breeders only to be disappointed when this little puppy bites on the house furniture and makes the carpet their rest room. While a lot of puppies have different styles of getting in trouble, what a responsible owner must do is to use up a lot of his time and tolerance to raise that little pup in to an obedient dog who will give joy to all. It is in this article that you will be provided with some basic dog training techniques to help you and your pup develop a joyful relationship.

Rules

First thing you need to do is create the household rules and begin right away as this will result to a more successful training. So if you do not want your seventy pound Golden retriever jumping up on your bed at night, neither should your little puppy. Not even once.

As it is never too late to get a puppy, it is also never too early to train your puppy to stay away from your furniture or to steer clear from jumping on your guests. You have to make sure that your entire family understands that when the puppy gets home, they should be prepared to enforce the rules that you created for your dog to follow.

Keeping Consistency

When rules are set, it will be up to you, the owner of the dog, on how you can keep consistency and how you can enforce them as well. Make sure that when your puppy breaks a rule of the household reprimand him with a sharp NO and show him the proper behavior.

This applies to all aspects of dog training, such as house breaking and chewing on his toys instead of your shoes. Just like kids, dogs will learn the rules quickest when they are enforced without fail. The problem is that consistency takes time and plenty of patience on the part of the dog owner. However, good, consistent dog training at the beginning will save time, effort " and your shoes " in the long run.

Give Positive Rewards

When your dog obeys the rules properly, it is essential that you reward him for that positive behavior. Effective dog training means using positive reinforcement rather than punishment to see better results. In the beginning, you can opt for edible treats as a reward. In the process, as your pup gets the hang of the dog training procedure, you can start using praises and positive attention when a command is obeyed by your dog. If positive reinforcement is consistently given, your pup will soon understand that whatever youre doing is for his won good.

Dog training is not particularly difficult, but it does take time, patience and consistency to produce the desired results. However, you will find that the time you put in will be well worth the effort when you end up with a dog that is enjoyable for your family and guests. - 20511

Basics In Sorting Out Yorkie Pictures

Basics In Sorting Out Yorkie Pictures

by Alex Baker

The Yorkshire terrier is a dog that comes to us from Scotland and England. There is plenty more to learn about them than just what meets the eye.

The Yorkshire terrier comes from a mix of other breeds that has been tweaked over decades. The result is a very small but energetic and loveable breed of dog.

Most people find them to be quite adorable and a great companion. This is good news because Yorkshire terriers do require a great deal of attention and interaction.

They love to socialize with people but not so much with other dogs. It is best to have only one or two pets to care for if you have a Yorkshire terrier.

The coat on a Yorkshire terrier is beautiful and very shiny. It will have a higher gloss to it though if you are feeding it a proper diet.

The vitamins and nutrients found in those foods are what it needs in order to really thrive. Proper grooming of thier coat is essential.

When you look at a Yorkie you will no doubt not realize all of the work the owner has put into caring for it. This involves having the hair trimmed regularly, choosing a haircut that works well for it, and combing it every couple of days.

Failure to pay attention to these important grooming issues can result in the Yorkshire terrier not looking very well at all.

When you view the Teacup Yorkshire Terrier up close you will notice some distinct features about them. Their coat has a variety of colors in it including shades of gold and tan. Dark brown and black are also very common.

If you look very close you may even find some dark blue colors on it. The Yorkshire terrier has a very short but thick tail and the ears stand up straight.

This isn't standard on the breed though but rather a process that is developed through a process. The owner should understand this process so they can get the right results.

It involves using a stick across the two wears with them taped into the proper position. After a length of time the ears will be permanently remaining that way.

While Yorkshire terriers are prone to many different health problems, they can do quite well with proper medical care and the right diet.

Making sure all of their basic needs are met from the very start is going to help you be successful in keeping them both healthy and happy. On average a Yorkie will live to be from 12-15 years of age.

The personality and temperament of Yorkshire terriers are quite interesting. These dogs don't carry themselves in a way that suggests they are small in size. They are very active and extremely protective of their owners.

They don't like to share attention though so they can become aggressive towards other pets you may have in your home.

To defend their owner and to get recognized they often engage in a very high pitched bark. It is certainly a sound you better grow accustomed to if you want to have a Yorkshire terrier around.

It is important to understand that due to their small size they are often the victims of falls and being stepped on. Make sure you do all you can to keep your Yorkie safe from such occurrences. - 20511

Walking Without A Fuss - Dog Leash Training

Walking Without A Fuss - Dog Leash Training

by Andyl Hannerl

Having the power to baby a puppy you just took home because its so tiny and adorable can be very tempting. But you have to remember that by doing so, this may lead to an untrained pup and a spoiled dog that will have a lot of different behavior problems in the long run. If this is the case, it will be hard to retrain a dog if hes already aged and is used to certain patterns already.

Dog leash training is one of these issues. Training a dog to a leash is much easier when the dog is a puppy, and is therefore small and easy to handle. When a dog is older, it is much more difficult to train it to the leash since it is physically much more able to pull the owner around and cause problems.

Instructions

First thing to do is have the new puppy get familiarized to having a collar around its neck. An initial reaction that is commonly seen when a collar is first put on a pup would be trying to take it off by rolling around, scratching it or by using different means just so the collar will be removed.

It will be very excruciating to watch this procedure but the owner has to learn to control himself and not remove the color until the time that it is in no doubt that the puppy has already calmed down. This just means that he can not manipulate the owner by using the different behaviors to have his collar removed and that the collar can be removed or not at any time.

The next step in dog leash training is to do the same sort of process with the leash. The leash should be attached to the puppy's collar and the puppy should be able to drag it around with him while he is playing.

Soon enough, he will forget the leash, just as he did the collar, which is when the owner will be ready to move to the next step. One important safety precaution with this step is to never leave the puppy unsupervised while dragging the leash around, in case he gets caught on something.

The final step is for the owner to train the dog to be comfortable having someone hold the end of his leash. The owner will need to walk around the house while holding the dogs leash. The leash should stay loose between the owner and the puppy so the dog is always by the owners area. If the dog tries to pull his owner, the owner must stop walking and call the dog so the god will be on the owners side again.

As soon as this happens, it would be safe for the owner to start walking again just as long as the puppy stays at the said where the lash is hanging freely. The puppy must be commended from time to time if he is doing well so that he knows that it is pleasurable walking that way. - 20511

Teacups Dogs: Learn Why Celebrities Love These Dogs

Teacups Dogs: Learn Why Celebrities Love These Dogs

by Ferdinand Dubem Emeka Rolland Rollins Okeke

Dogs have been with us for numerous centuries. In the past, they have been employed for various activities, such as hunting and guarding. Nonetheless, unless you live in the country and have your own cattle, youre not very apt to have a dog for such purposes.

Today, most people keep dogs for the simple joy of their company. Dogs are becoming more part of the family unit, with families dwelling farther and farther and children leaving home at early age. Additionally, dogs are playful, loyal, social and amiable. They receive you and smother you with such joy that you would think they have not seen in you in ages.

All The Same, Not every dog is fit for our companionship needs, because of the lifestyles we tend to lead, for example the Saint Bernard are very big and too needy to be kept at home, and it is not possible to keep them in an apartment. In addition, some dogs require large spaces to exercise themselves in order to stay healthy, for instance the German Shepherd and the Doberman.

This is one of the reasons that (http://imarketingbiz.net/products-page/pets) teacup dog breeds are becoming more and more popular. In case you havent heard the term, teacup dog breeds are breeds of dogs that are little or very little in comparison to other dogs and are much easier to keep in small spaces. Teacup dog breeds are also very easy to carry around. They are light enough and small enough to fit in a purse or be carried in arms.

Additionally teacup dog breeds are very convenient for travel. They fit in much smaller travel cages when traveling by air.. This explicates why numerous famous people and artists who travel a lot opt teacup dog breeds for their pets. Maybe the most famous one is Paris Hiltons Tinkerbell, a little Chihuahua that she takes around with her anywhere she goes, and which is nearly as famous as she is.

Because they do not require much exercise like larger dogs do is another reason why teacup dog breeds are popular. Once Again Teacup dog breeds get listless quicker, and it's a good thing when they escape and you need to catch them before they get hurt or wounded. Due to their small legs, they move slower than their big counterparts. Notwithstanding, it's not all teacup dog breeds that get used to these characteristics. Some teacup dog breeds are very athletic and fast, like the Maltese and the Papillon.

In Conclusion, one reason why people prefer teacup dog breeds is plainly because theyre cute. And because they never grow much bigger than their puppy size, they keep that charm all over their lives. - 20511

Madagascar's Royal Dog: The Coton de Tulear

Madagascar's Royal Dog: The Coton de Tulear

by Marissa Clark

From its glorious name Coton de Tulear, one can readily assume a cottony soft and silky smooth fluffy coat for this dog. But that's not all there is to it because this miniscule canine creature is also very funny, charming and every bit an entertainer. Though this dog has only been introduced to the West two decades ago, this royal dog of Madagascar is undoubtedly one of the newest breeds to watch out for.

The Coton de Tulear has only been discovered recently in Madagascar by a physician visiting the island. He was captivated by the charm of this breed and it didn't take long before the breed traveled across oceans towards North America and Europe. For decades, this breed lived in seclusion among the upper-class residents of the island.

Like other bichon dogs, the Coton is without a doubt stately in its posture and French in its facial emotions. There are three colors for the Coton coat and they are black and white, white, and tri-color (a combination of black, white and brown). All over its body, the Coton is filled by long, soft and fluffy hair to the point that even its small legs are also covered.

In order to maintain the luscious and pretty coat of the Coton, regular grooming is needed. On a daily basis, it is best to comb and brush the hair of the Coton and the excess hair on the ears and foot padding should be clipped. This breed needs to be given a bath once or twice per year.

Like a true comedian, the Coton will give its master and audience a good show because this breed loves to perform and please people. It is known to perform tricks such as standing, walking and jumping using only its two feet. In socialization, this pet is superb since it is very friendly towards children and other dogs and animals.

This little breed is also good-hearted, affectionate and cheerful. It is devoted and attached to the master and thus it quickly catches separation anxiety whenever the master has to be away. Despite the size, however, the Coton is intelligent, very easy to train and has a mind of its own.

The Coton is very alert and thus makes a very good watchdog. It also has a natural stubbornness within and so sometimes it plays deaf to the commands of the master. This dog is also unique in its vocal sounds especially when it whines about something or is happy because it gives out a vocal noise as a form of expression.

The ancestors of the Coton de Tulear have been brought by pirates to Madagascar, an island which long ago was a favorite haven of these people. Pirates and sea bandits usually come to this island to hide or stock their stolen goods from the ships they hijacked. For centuries, the Coton lived in the island with the Merina tribe and the islanders consider it as a national dog. - 20511
