The Popular and Densely- Mustached Breed: The Standard Schnauzer

by James Russo

As a favorite subject of many classic artists, this royal-looking and wise-dispositioned dog is inarguably classic and endlessly popular. From paintings, tapestries and statues, the Standard Schnauzer is a time- proven favorite of both the past and present centuries. Not only does Rembrandt, Drer or Sir Joshua Reynolds holds an inclination for this dog but millions of fanciers too around the globe.

The Standard Schnauzer is of German origin and is the fore ancestor of the Giant Schnauzer and the Miniature Schnauzer. With more than 500 years of existence, the Standard Schnauzer is said to be one of the oldest dog breeds around the world. It existed around 1400s or 1500s Germany from the herding, ratting and guarding breeds of the Middle Ages Europe.

The term Schnauzer is a German word meaning "snout" in which the Schnauzer type is known for. In 1879, the Standard Schnauzer first appeared in a dog show in Hanover. In the year 1900, the first batch of this breed reached the United States.

Originally, the Standard Schnauzer was used as a working dog, helping farmers guard and herd the flock, accompanying them to the market, and guarding and watching over the property. As World War I broke out, the Red Cross enlisted the breed as guard dogs and they were found excellent in this feat. Today, they are used by Germany and the US as police dogs, narcotics and bomb detectors and search-and-rescue aids.

This breed is extremely energetic, agile, strong and quick to adapt. Moreover, it is very intelligent, in fact one of the most intelligent dog breeds; reliable and highly biddable. These characteristics make this dog a perfect companion for critical and official tasks.

When it comes to loyalty, this dog leads the rank and it is ever protective towards the master and his family. Although medium in size, this dog is gigantic when it comes to barking as it loudly wards off unfavorable strangers. Around friends and family, however, this breed is adoringly playful, gentle and affectionate.

Because of this dog's excessive energy, regular exercise and activities are needed in order to shake off some of its unused energy. Exercise and activities should include daily walks, playtime and other house chores. These activities, too, will work out its mind and body therefore it becomes fit emotionally and physically.

According to the Standard Schnauzer Club of America, "The Standard Schnauzer is a squarely built, very energetic, medium-sized dog with a stiff and wiry coat." The standard and only acceptable colors of the Standard Schnauzer are salt- and-pepper and black. The male breed stands 18-20 inches high, weighs 40-45 pounds and the female breed stands 17-19 inches and weighs 35-40 pounds. - 20511
