Japanese Chins, the Cat-Like Dogs of the Orient

Japanese Chins, the Cat-Like Dogs of the Orient

by Rebecca Roberts

This dog sports a very Oriental expression, and it's no wonder they are called Japanese Chins! According to the American Kennel Club, these regal, dignified dogs have a bright, inquisitive, alert and intelligent expression. They look very Oriental, because of their broad heads and short muzzles, feathered ears, and large, wide-set eyes.

The Japanese Chin is one of the most cat-like among the dog breeds when it comes to temperament. It uses its paws to wash or wipe its face! They also prefer to rest on high surfaces just like cats, such as chair and sofa arms, and can tiptoe across a table without disturbing the items on it.

We can trace this small and stylish animal's ancestry to the ancient Chinese and Japanese royal courts. In fact, you can probably see this royal heritage by the stately way it holds its head up high! They even look like they are wearing royal robes, with their long, shiny and straight hair, feathery tails, and heavy ruffs in the chest and ear area.

These stately little fellows come in a range of colors. They can be black and white, red and white (shades come in lemon, sable or mahogany), and tri-color. That latter combination could be black and white with tan patches and points on their faces, body and over their eyes.

Japanese chins are serene, perceptive animals. They echo their environment, meaning if your house is full of light and cheer and you have a busy, outgoing lifestyle, they will also be very friendly and social. If you have a solitary, secluded home life, they will also mirror that trait.

Another cat-like quirk they have is to climb up on things, just like their feline counterparts! They also snort or sneeze sometimes, as cats do, and cough up the occasional hairball from all the face washing! It is not a cause for alarm if they sneeze, however"it is due to their broad facial structure.

It is recommended to socialize your Japanese Chin early, so that they are more emotionally well-balanced. Although they prefer familiar surroundings, these stately little fellows adapt well to change and have even been used as therapy dogs. They love people and will bark when visitors arrive or if something out of the ordinary occurs, but otherwise they are very quiet.

Japanese Chin are also a very entertaining breed of dog, given to doing what is called the "Chin Spin"! They are generally a calm breed of dog, but it is quite endearing to see them turn in rapid circles, dancing on their hind legs and raising their front feet in the air in a "clapping" sort of motion, and some even "sing"! This sound can range from a low trill to a higher, almost soprano-like noise that sounds like "booo! - 20511
