Considered as the aristocratic relative of the St. Bernard and the Newfoundland, the Great Pyrenees is another wonderful large breed that's been captivating the hearts of many people for hundreds of years. From nomadic adventures to royal treatment and from heroic wartime efforts to household companionship, this dog definitely went through it all. This breed was greatly known to be a working dog and up to this day, many families still take them in for this purpose and more.
Also known as the Pyrenean Mountain dog, the Great Pyrenees was found flourishing in the breathtaking scape of the Pyrenees mountain range, a vast cluster of majestic mountains that divides the empires of France and Spain. This breed is believed to be a very old breed and when it is found in the mountains, it was living with the Basque tribes who are striving in different areas of the Pyrenees in southern France and northern Spain. In this setting, the Great Pyrenees was being used primarily as a herd guardian dog and a trusted family companion.
From one enchanted French aristocrat, the Great Pyrenees' fame spread all throughout the royalties of Europe and stayed so even after the next decade. In the middle ages, it is said that the Great Pyrenees was the trusted guard of castles particularly the Castle of Lourdes. For a very long time, this breed became the favorite pet of countless royalties and one famous owner of it is the French royal court.

Together with their nomad owners, they led a nomadic life; going from place to place until eventually they reached the Pyrenees. If left alone, this dog is capable of being well-collected and well-behaved and it is loving and playful around children.
Inside the home, the Great Pyrenees is loving, loyal obedient and kind. Sometimes, just to show its love, it sacrifices itself for the sake of its human family. This breed does not do well with suspicious people but around friends and family, it is gentle and playful.
The Great Pyrenees is famous for its thick and long, white colored hair with a faint hint of tan, gray and rust highlights. It is the standard appearance of this breed to have a jet black nose and eye rims and dogs born lacking with these features are considered as disqualifications.
