Different parasitic contagions can affect your cat. Although only a few cat worms can be cured at home, it is still recommended that you take your cat to the veterinarian. In case of contact with infected cats, humans can also be affected by these infections.
Types of cat worms:
* Tapeworms: A common type of tapeworms in cats is Dipylidium Caninum. Cats infested with fleas are very apt to get tapeworms. Again cats that are involved in hunting wildlife with tapeworm is liable to be infested. Once they are inside the cat's intestine, the eggs break down and grow into adult tapeworms. When inside the cat, it attaches itself to the intestine's wall and sets out feeding on its nutrients. The tail section drops off and passes through the cat stool. These sections contain the eggs and resemble rice grains when dried.
Tapeworms cannot be treated with over-the-counter dewormers. A vet visit is a must.
* Hookworms: these are very thin and small worms which attach themselves to the wall of the cats intestine and suck blood. Cats infest hookworms through the ingestion of soil contaminated with hookworm eggs. Symptoms are bloody diarrhea, anemia, weakness and loss of stamina. Hookworms can be fatal, and can result to death if not remedied in a timely fashion.
Its cause is identified by examining stool sample of the cat.
* Roundworms: Virtually all kitties are born with roundworm larvae in their tissues. They are transmigrated from the mothers tissues right from the time the kitten was in the mothers womb. Cats can contract roundworms by consuming infected lizards, birds and bugs or also by ingesting fouled soil. The larvae migrates to the intestinal tracts and stay in the small intestine and turn into adult roundworms. The eggs are passed in the cat stool and they can re-infect the kitten, other dogs or cats, if the contaminated feces are eaten.
Roundworms can be deadly. If you see symptoms like pot belly and poor growth in your kitten, then visit the vet at once.
Precautions:
* Remove feces from the backyard on a regular basis. * De-worm your cat under veterinarian oversight. * Have the cat stool studied regularly in recurring cases. * Do not mix as they are poisonous and can be fatal and don't administer any other wormer if your cat is currently under medication. * Always visit a vet if you see any symptoms of cat worms.
You must note that all cat worms can also affect humans. And they also have great risks of re-infecting your pet. It is highly recommended to get your cat treated by a veterinarian if you see or even suspect any type of cat worms. - 20511
