Train Your Puppy To Be A Well Behaved Dog

Train Your Puppy To Be A Well Behaved Dog

by Denise E Kelly

Puppies and dogs are natural pack animals and most of their behavior reflects that fact. The most crucial thing to do when you get a new puppy is to confirm your control. You are the "pack leader" and you must always make sure that your puppy knows that.

Puppies will expend a great amount of time trying to figure out where they fit into the chain of command. They generally do this by trying to prove their own domination. Some breeds are more forceful than others, for instance, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more passive naturally.

As soon as your puppy comes home you need to help him determine his place in the hierarchy. All of the human members of the family are above him in the "pecking order" and he needs to be aware of that fact. This is not punishment at all and dogs actually prefer to be submissive to their owners. If your dog is to become content and well-behaved member of your household this hierarchy must be established.

There are a few easy rules that you must follow to establish this authority. If not your puppy will be receiving diverse signals and it will make training much more difficult as he will be befuddled as to what you really want and who the authoritarian member is.

The leader of the pack always eats first. Never let your puppy eat before you eat or at least don't ever let him see you eat after he does. Make him wait until after you and your family eat if you were planning on eating about the same time or just eat at entirely different times. At first you may want to call your puppy to the food and make him wait for you to put it down. You can teach him to sit and then put the bowl down.

Grooming your puppy can send compelling signals about who is in charge. At the beginning your puppy may complain and wail when you touch him for basic grooming however you must pay no attention to him and be firm on finishing. At all times follow through on what you start because puppies discover very quickly if you really mean something or not.

When puppies are little they use their mouths to nip and bite at things. You must stop this behavior at once by giving him a sudden "No" and a tap if required. The leader of the pack never allows nipping and you are the leader of the pack.

The most crucial thing with a puppy is to show him that you are the dominant leader of the pack so be prudent of games such as "tug'o'war' where he could show some authority. You must commend his good behavior with words and treats and pay no heed to his poor behavior as you embark on obedience training. If you follow these simple tips you will have a well-behaved doggie citizen. - 20511
