2 Effective Methods To Housetrain Your New Puppy

2 Effective Methods To Housetrain Your New Puppy

by Kevin Lynch

Housetraining is habitually the number one priority for most families when they get a new puppy. Very few puppies will be housetrained as soon as you get them. There are two very efficient methods you can use to housetrain your puppy and you can use just one of them or you can even use them concurrently.

The first manner may be the most complex as you will need to be very vigilant about staying with your puppy and noticing his behavior. Puppies will crouch to urinate and defecate and you will need to watch closely but as soon as you see your puppy changing posture you must scoop him up and take him outside to his designated spot. If you happen to overlook the signs you must not scold your puppy because he does not yet know what is expected of him.

If you happen to miss the signs entirely and you come across an disaster later, do not reprimand him. Dogs can only link to what is happening now and he will not know why he is in trouble if you rebuke him after the fact. This will just serve to baffle your puppy and that will cause you more tribulations in the future.

The second method to housetrain your puppy is to use a newspaper method. Start by covering the full floor of the space where your puppy runs around. He will learn that the newspaper is an okay place to do his business. Increasingly reduce the newspapers in the room, making it smaller and smaller until there is only a small spot left. Then you can take that small piece of newspaper outside to his designated spot and he will start going there.

Either or both of these methods can be very effectual. You can use both methods at the same time by using attention during the day and the paper at night or if you are sidetracked by other things at several times of the day you can use the paper then while using alertness at other times.

Now and again an older puppy will go through a stage where he seems to have forgotten what he has learned about housetraining. This can be exceedingly maddening but try not to punish him for it. It is a ordinary behavior.

Just use characteristic dog manners to get him back on track. A dog will rarely dirty his own place. So use a crate and make it snug so he thinks of it as his own. Let him doze in the crate and right away as you let him out, take him to his designated spot. He will need to alleviate himself right away and he will understand to only do it in that spot.

Housetraining does not need to be grueling or intimidating. Both of these methods can be quite valuable and if you try them along with some tolerance you will be successful with your housetraining before you know it. - 20511
