If you are enjoying a quiet meal at home with your family, or even with guests, and your dog decides to start whining until someone gives him some food, you'll most likely be very frustrated. This kind of irritating behaviour can be annoying to you and your guests and shouldn't be tolerated.
If you have a whining dog, you need to teach it that this type behaviour is unacceptable. It will only get worse if left untreated.
One thing you must know is that begging is never an easy thing to teach your dog to stop. The reason that this is true is because you taught him that this was okay to begin with. You allow him to eat from the table and you give in when he does the whining. Because you have allowed this behavior, you should be used to it happening. However, if you want it to stop you will need to use some very important strategies and tips to help your dog lose this behavior.
The first bit of advice you will need to know is that if your dog is making a pest of himself, and driving you up the wall with the begging, you will need to remove him from your presence, away from the situation and away from your company. You will need to always keep him out of the dining area during dinner time period. Keep him in the kitchen, another room or out in the yard during meals so that he knows that he is not a part of that procedure and it will help with the begging problem.
When you put him out during meal times, for a while he will come and beg at the windows and beg when you have food in your hand, however you will need to be consistent and be sure not to ever feed him from the table. Also stay away from giving him human food at all.
Should you give him anything from the table you will have to start from scratch with his training.
Alternatively, you might like to try giving you dog his food at the same time you eat yours. This will in most cases provide enough distraction for your dog to stop the whining and begging and will also allow him to feel like a part of the family. If you don't want him to eat at the same time, stick to the isolation method mentioned above.
One of the most important things that you need to remember when training your dog not to beg is that you can never allow him to eat from your table. Begging and whining should never be given in to as this will only teach your dog to do more of it. If you have any children, make sure they understand the importance of not giving your dog food during diner time. - 20511
