There is a general belief that ringworms are caused by worm infestation, but contrary to this, they are caused by a fungus called Dermatophytes which can affect both animals and humans. Numerous species of ringworms exist but the most noted form in dogs is Mircosporum Canis.

What are the ways of ringworms transmission to (http://imarketingbiz.net/pets) dogs?

Ringworms are infectious disease and the dogs are infected by these fungi through their surroundings such as kennel and burrows. It can also pass from rodents or other affected animals or humans and visa versa.

Found in carpets, beddings and grooming equipments, the fungal spores can dwell in the environment for virtually thirteen months. If in contact with these environs, the dogs can be infected.

Symptoms:

One of the symptoms of ringworms in dogs is an abrasion on the skin. It does not necesarily have the shape of a ring, which is unlike ringworms in humans. The hairless lesion will develop in size and form an irregular shape. Traditionally found on the face, ears, tail and paw of the dog, they may or may not be itchy, but the affected area turns reddish in colour and inflamed.

Are all dogs susceptible to ringworms?

Young puppies are more vulnerable to ringworms because their immune system has not been fully developed which is a sharp contrast to a healthy and adult dog, which is less susceptible to ringworms. Many dogs may be carriers of ringworms but may not show any sign of symptoms, but can still transfer the infection to humans and other animals.

Diagnoses and treatment of ringworms in dogs:

Dogs require to be taken to a vet for diagnosis and treatment of ringworms. Plucking hair from the infected area and analyzing it under the ultra violet light is one of the ways this diagnosis is can be carried out. If the diagnosis shows an infection, the vet will suggest anti fungal pills or topical medication like shampoos and creams.

Precautions to prevent transmission to humans and re-infection in dogs:

*Get rid of used items by the infected pet, items like brushes, scratching posts, blankets, combs etc. If some of the items cannot be destroyed, then they need to be soaked in hot water and Betadine or lodophor solution for an hour. After that, they should be washed and rinsed using water and chlorine bleach combination. Preferably dry them in open sunlight. * Vacuum the house exhaustively and immediately discard the vacuum bag. * Steam-wash all carpets and upholstery and wash the walls with water and chlorine bleach mixture. Dispose the air filter if any. * Keep kids away from infected pets and wear gloves while grooming the dog and handling any grooming equipments. In order to ensure hygienic conditions, clip the dog nails and cut the hair.

Ringworms in dogs are curable but they are extremely infectious. It also takes time for convalescence. Thus it is wise to undertake precautionary measures and visit the veterinarian timely for proper diagnosis and treatment. - 20511
