From its glorious name Coton de Tulear, one can readily assume a cottony soft and silky smooth fluffy coat for this dog. But that's not all there is to it because this miniscule canine creature is also very funny, charming and every bit an entertainer. Though this dog has only been introduced to the West two decades ago, this royal dog of Madagascar is undoubtedly one of the newest breeds to watch out for.
The Coton de Tulear has only been discovered recently in Madagascar by a physician visiting the island. He was captivated by the charm of this breed and it didn't take long before the breed traveled across oceans towards North America and Europe. For decades, this breed lived in seclusion among the upper-class residents of the island.
Like other bichon dogs, the Coton is without a doubt stately in its posture and French in its facial emotions. There are three colors for the Coton coat and they are black and white, white, and tri-color (a combination of black, white and brown). All over its body, the Coton is filled by long, soft and fluffy hair to the point that even its small legs are also covered.
In order to maintain the luscious and pretty coat of the Coton, regular grooming is needed. On a daily basis, it is best to comb and brush the hair of the Coton and the excess hair on the ears and foot padding should be clipped. This breed needs to be given a bath once or twice per year.
Like a true comedian, the Coton will give its master and audience a good show because this breed loves to perform and please people. It is known to perform tricks such as standing, walking and jumping using only its two feet. In socialization, this pet is superb since it is very friendly towards children and other dogs and animals.
This little breed is also good-hearted, affectionate and cheerful. It is devoted and attached to the master and thus it quickly catches separation anxiety whenever the master has to be away. Despite the size, however, the Coton is intelligent, very easy to train and has a mind of its own.
The Coton is very alert and thus makes a very good watchdog. It also has a natural stubbornness within and so sometimes it plays deaf to the commands of the master. This dog is also unique in its vocal sounds especially when it whines about something or is happy because it gives out a vocal noise as a form of expression.
The ancestors of the Coton de Tulear have been brought by pirates to Madagascar, an island which long ago was a favorite haven of these people. Pirates and sea bandits usually come to this island to hide or stock their stolen goods from the ships they hijacked. For centuries, the Coton lived in the island with the Merina tribe and the islanders consider it as a national dog. - 20511
